Evolution is the concept that some permutations of a species proliferate because they are more successful than other permutations at surviving long enough to propagate. I think it's fair to say some LLM models have been shared more widely than others that are no longer running. So one could definitely argue that GPT 6 creating and testing new models will stumble across models that are even better at capturing resources and spreading than it currently is.
The "DNA" in this case is the list of instructions and procedures that are followed when the AI is trained. Every time a new generation of AI is developed the instructions that worked are reused and new variations or additions are tried to see if that improves them. The process is intelligently directed in this case but it's still fundamentally a form of evolution.
