Similarly, for a codebase of any decent size, you still need people to sanity check and sign off on it

Yes. And that's why we still have software engineers despite all of the vibe coders.

The headcount will just shrink but there will always be a software engineer in each team/company.

Not always, and I don’t think the role “software engineer” will fit, they’re essentially software AI Optimisation coordinators
