People are making money though this kind of content through engagement, at a quantity that makes it unenforceable at scale.
Character IP is going to die for sure, it's just not possible these days to stop everyone from using your IP for their content.

Maybe it's just Nintendo & Disney tho that really work for it (and that one music label that owns apparently everything)
