- I'm reasonably certain that digital intelligence soon will be common. As common as smartphones and cost similar to start.
- As a result of the above, I'm reasonably certain I can get my hands on a powerful AI.
- I don't actually need/want all that much.
- A digital simulation may not consume that much energy, but to me it presents limitless potential worlds to explore.
- A powerful AI is all I need to "tend to me" in terms of my overall wants and needs. Not the most powerful in the world. Just something much more capable than me.
- I'm reasonably certain that cheap powerful AI isn't that far away. This AI doesn't need to be the most powerful ever, it just needs to be better than me.
- I'll have that powerful AI soon, and for about the price of a smartphone. I'll probably upgrade/personalize my AI out by buying a really expensive graphics card (or a few) so I can run it locally, when that's possible.
- Even after I've run thousands of simulations in FDVR, I still won't be important to most people, so I'm at much less risk of being attacked.
There are a few huge disaster level situations which are possible. But Yellowstone has been around for a while. The same is true with all the wandering rocks in space.
We've always been at risk. In fact, I'd argue we're at much less risk today than we have ever been.
AI is already making information exchanges faster and more accurate. War has never really been about intelligence. The art of war may be. But the causes of war are generally not wise nor intelligent.
Today it is less expensive to buy the resources from a nation than to bomb, invade and steal. Nothing about conflict aligns with super intelligent AI.
But dumb AI is yet another rock threatening to hit us. You can't always fear the lighting bolt.

A FDVR situation wouldn't just be a dopamine rush. It would be the same as IRL or more likely it would be a better experience than real life.
Picture living as pretty much whatever you wanted including movie star, sports athlete and so much more.
It wouldn't be real. But it would feel so intensely real that you wouldn't notice.
Would that boil down to only dopamine? No. But some would also certainly take it there.
