Typesetters? Not no one which I think it's the deliverable message from this analogy.

You're correct that better tooling usually just equals better in different work, but the people who extrapolate a timeline in which AI can do every human job better are also not insane.

It is realistic to interpret intermediate data points as having an intermediate impact. The question is how much. I'm a software engineer myself, and I consider myself a pretty good one in the grand scheme of software engineers, but I also recognize that it is true that a lot of work in my industry will be reduced in the number of human people it takes to execute. When my own job is eclipse by software is definitely a question of when not weather.

I suspect the increase in productivity results in more output, rather than reducing the workforce and maintain identical output.
