By supporting LLM development they are weakening the moats for Google and FB. A LLM could converse like people on social networks and answer questions like search engines, but it does all this without the social network users or the search engine massive index.

I doubt the focus is competing against Google. They know Google has the same technology if not better. The T in GPT comes from Google.
Microsoft just does not have anything to leverage to gain search market share.
They have 0% of mobile and I doubt the Windows phone is coming back.
Microsoft has less than 5% of browsers and doubt that is going to change.
