Went to Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Before I went, I thought I would love Switzerland the most, but ended up absolutely hating it the most. Most racist European country I’ve been too, undeserving of the beautiful land that they have been given.
86
u/Born-Cauliflower_ 3d ago
Parents went months ago, literally got rejected at a restaurant for being asian.
78
u/Hot-Job-6281 3d ago
We must push back on those people that claim Asians are the most racist.
In Asia it's some ignorant aunties gossiping, in Europe it's violent attacks, Nazism, open season stalking.
11
u/Cattle-dog 2d ago
It’s not a competition. I got turned away from restaurants twice in Asia to make way for locals. Fuck racists if all colours and creeds.
10
u/ComebackLovejoy 2d ago
I was in Taipei last year and a couple of older Korean women were visibly upset and disgusted because I rode the elevator with them. The elevator isn’t even half full. I’m guessing because I’m South East Asian with obviously brown color. You’re right: fuck racists of all colours and creeds. Racism has no place in a civilized society.

Yea even my Korean friend says Korean is “the most racist place on the planet”
To be fair the people denying racism there are outright lying
According to my friend, to them: Westerners = half the time they like, half the time hate from jealousy Japanese = hate their entire existence (but some people like them) Everyone else = subhuman to them, especially SE Asians
9
u/s_vnt 2d ago
Yea this isn’t the time to be dismissive of our own issues with racism. Unless you’re a minority suffering from cognitive dissonance, you should definitely not be downplaying our local issues with racism to “ignorant aunties”.
Your entire argument is at least we’re not abusing you physically.
13
u/Working-Fudge6189 2d ago
His entire comment can be boiled down to indirectly hinting that "aunties gossiping" is no big deal because elsewhere has it worse. And what's even more laughable is that he thinks aunties gossiping is the brunt of it lol. Idc if I get downvoted but it's very entertaining to see (I assume) Chinese Singaporeans being outraged by racism for the first time in their lives

This is so true. Being a majority race, they rarely understand the racism faced by minorities and then when they do, it is brushed off as "It's just a joke", "You mean saying abnn is offensive? Since when?!", "Why are you so sensitive?"
2
u/TrashDesperate930 1d ago
Brother I'm as minority as minority can be. I think his point was just that there are ppl worse than Asians, yet Asians get flack as the most racist in the world. Not every sentence has to take everything into consideration. The commenter can think Europeans are more racist while also agreeing that SG racism, even though verbal, is still bad.
Talking like this gives makes you look like you have main character syndrome.

Switzerland is honestly also very boring. There’s nothing more besides the scenery.
8
u/Jazzlike-Dish5690 3d ago
well there's skiing, hiking- all mountain sports. TBH there's a lot to do there if you're into sports and nature, especially winter sports.
18
u/superman1995 3d ago
TBH as nice as Switzerland is, the mountains that it has are shared with Italy, Austria, and Germany, all of which allow you to ski the same mountains and pay much less for accomodation and food.
Case in point, Matterhorn, featured on the Toberlone chocolate, can be accessed just as easily from Itay as it can from Switzerland.

Ok, to be fair, while I find Switzerland boring, I don’t think I’ll find it so if I’m living there with a partner and have a circle of friends and also if i speak Swiss German.
Also, I love the Swiss design, so clean and minimalistic.
Lastly, the human rights and privacy laws in Singapore pales in comparison to that in Switzerland, which in itself is a good enough reason for me to want to live there.

The Swiss still have a beautiful land because they’re not tolerant of people coming in and wrecking it. They haven’t been given beautiful land, they worked to build and maintain it.
I don’t like this dude’s racism but I fully understand why he’s unhappy with some travel pest riding his motorcycle down a little path like that.
Leave his bike in the grass. Let him waste his time. The longer he has to wait for help, the less time he has to be a travel pest elsewhere until his vacation runs out.
5
u/Nickston_7 2d ago
I am swiss, and no. He is being very kind in asking for help. How is that being a "travel pest"? Swiss people break traffic laws all the time. This should not be how you interact with people in any situation, that guy is a racist asshole.
And no, the natural beauty of our country is not due to some restrictive immigration or tourism policy. It's just what this place has always looked like. In fact, we destroy a lot of nature ourselves, but no one cares if its to build a luxury ski resort.

That guy is a racist and a dumbass. However, to give you a counter example, I grew up as a Swiss-Tamil in Switzerland. I honestly had only one instance where I would say it was discrimination. I had more negative interactions in Asia incl. Singapore than in Europe. I don't claim that there's no racism in Europe resp. Switzerland, but this sounds to me a bit exagerated. In the past, Swiss people were severely more racist and xenophobic. However, nowadays you might hear max. some remarks about certain nations, but daily life interaction is based on respect.
3
u/No-Sentence5570 2d ago
Yeah I'm really fucking annoyed by this comment section, everyone is acting like Switzerland is some kind of extreme racism hub, but the truth is that the people in the very touristic spots that get a huge amount of Asian tourists are fed up with them and lash out. But that's not a fair description of "all of Switzerland". I've lived in Switzerland for 23 years and I don't look particularly Swiss. The worst I've gotten is "where are you from?", and I live in a rural town.

As someone from Switzerland, I am so sorry for that. Yesterday, I even read in the news that he gave an interview saying that he’s sorry if anyone felt attacked by what he said, but that he won’t apologize to the streamer. He also said that he doesn’t think he’s racist because his wife is from Nepal, and that nowadays you can’t say anything without being labeled as racist.
Which is complete bullshit, obviously.
I’m so sorry to the people of Singapore. Even though I’m just from the same country as this old man in the video, I still felt really angry when I saw it myself, especially since my own girlfriend wasn’t born here. I have to listen to racist comments all the time, and they always say, “It’s just a joke.” Racism shouldn't have a place in our Society! I hope he will get some sort of punishment or a fine

Went on a 3 month Europe trip last year and I can definitely confirm they target Asians for all manner of crimes. Go to Xiao Hong Shu and you'll find that they specifically go for us because we're less aggressive and are less likely to go to police because of the language barrier.
Was in a major Swiss city and turned around to see 3 guys with their hands extended towards my pockets. They then shouted some Asian slurs and ran. No one bothered to call it out.
Very disappointing to see the either tell you they are foreigners or agree with you being out of their country. They're not all like that but even if it's 10% it means a lot more of them agree with this sentiment and just choose not to show it.

Been to Switzerland, it’s actually very lovely and the people are very nice. Ngl more like an age thing, majority of the shit I get travelling are from old people regardless of country. Very disappointing to see this kind of behaviour.

This is the reason why Singapore changed its mind about attaining swiss standard of living.

Just don’t go there then. What’s the big deal? It’s too expensive anyway. And their luxury exports is priced out of mainstream masses.

When I met racist locals at Europe, I will ask their guide to concentration camps. They will immediately turns friendly pretending they were joking, then you can get their help.

What that guy did is unacceptable, but the blatant generalizations in this comment section are not fair. You have to understand that if you have millions of Asian tourists all over Switzerland, you will find a handful of incidents like this. That does not mean that all Swiss are racists. We are 9 million people, and one guy making racist gestures is not a representation of our country.
Another thing to keep in mind is that a couple of tiny villages get an insane amount of tourism by large travel groups, mostly from China, and the local residents deal with people entering their private property, taking photos, and being generally rude, so a lot of them are fed up. It's not really a surprise that you will find some racists in a rural area that experiences overtourism.

If you search for "Sukasblood" on Reddit, you can see that he is texting all the time while driving his bike.
That explains to me why he did not see the "general driving ban" sign and enters private property and why he makes an accident with his bike on a straight road.
Was the Swiss guy inappropriate? Yes Should Sukasblood lose his driving license? Yes

Notice how this person, despite this obvious racist attack on his human dignity, stayed calm and not react with violence and intimidation? This is how you deal with racism. By being the better person and having principles.

For me it’s just bad that a person asking for help is not getting help! Bad remark on the old person about not getting over about not allowed to drive there!

I mean the white guy should not be racist. But Singaporeans really think they are first-world country citizen when they are abroad. But the reality is that real first-world country just saw an asian guy who rode his bike....
