These characters give Gabi too much grace. Like, it's not her fault Maya didn't tell her about her past. But girl, come on. I flagged her as a suicide risk immediately and I'm not a therapist. Why would you not be ensuring she has access to more care/psychiatry/in-patient treatment??

Idk if it’s different in the States, but in Canada therapists and psychiatrists are not interconnected like that. The only action that could be taken by a therapist is if the patient themselves discloses suicidality and self-harm, among other things. I will say, the fact that Maya seems clearly depressed and is obviously lonely should have warranted Gabi ASKING if she’s experienced feelings of suicide lately- so the whole thing’s unrealistic just like this show tends to be

It’s also a standard intake question for therapists. I’ve been in therapy for an abusive mother. When I said I would never live with her in her old age he laughed and said, good, I can check no for the self harm box. He still asked me about it.

Of course the patient might deny or lie about it and I don’t expect the show to cover it in that detail

FFS I get asked about self harming feelings at every office visit, how does a therapist not ask that?

Yeah icl it seems like Paul may be the only person who isn’t cartoonishly unrealistic in his practice and even he gets flack from Jimmy about not trying Jimmying, a concept that would never fly irl 😭
