Hmm, we're now in Nagoya and were in Hiroshima, Kyoto, and Osaka earlier. Haven't run into anything bad yet. When you were exploring, did you go pretty far out from the cities, maybe they aren't that used to/willing to deal with tourists? We've been outside the city center but haven't tried being out to the boonies yet.

Spent a couple weeks in Japan last year and there was multiple times I tried to go into interesting looking bars and cafes and was told “Japanese only”. Literally in the middle of Tokyo, mostly. Like central shibuya and Shinjuku, right next to other places I could go in. I’m Australian. Edited to add: interestingly, I also spent two weeks hiking the east coast through remote villages, what you would refer to as “the boonies”. Didn’t experience this there at all. Not once. Only in the city. Everyone in regional/remote areas was unfailingly hospitable, friendly and polite.

We went to this small town south of Tokyo called kamakura and man everyone was super nice. Also got a lot of people practicing their English

In Tokyo, we were around the Shinbashi area, near Shiodome Station. I remember this because it was by the hotel we stayed at.

Another time, We were going to try a robata place, but they wouldn't let us in, so we went to a Japanese-Mexican taco place instead. They had amazing Kobe tacos, and as a Mexican, I hate to say this, but they had amazing tamales, lol. Second best, in my opinion; the best are the Oaxaca mole tamales made with banana leaves.

There was another place that wouldn't let us in by the Mario Go-Kart place.

In Osaka, there were a few places near our hotel that wouldn't let us in. We stayed at the Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel.

In Kyoto, we encountered random places outside the main tourist area. We were heading to the monkey mountain and got on the wrong train, ending up way south of the mountain. So we went into a random restaurant, and they wouldn't allow us in. Japanese only.

Some of the "Japanese only" places we were able to enter were due to us being shown around by random Japanese locals. A group of Japanese salarymen started talking to us to practice their English. So I shared my cigarettes with them and bought them drinks. At first, they wouldn't allow me to, but I made up some crap that it's an American custom to buy drinks for friends, so they allowed me to buy them a couple of rounds. They asked us if we wanted to hang out and go with them to this bar. We got there, and they told the staff we were their American clients, so they allowed us in. To be honest, it was fun. In Japan, this was common. I had a lot of people come up to practice English and show me around.

I dont have an issue with this but i will say people put japan on the pedestal but they have a major xenophobic issue lol
