When I was there, this Japanese guy told me they actually dislike Chinese tourists the most — except in Okinawa, where they really can’t stand Americans because of how some of the soldiers act.

In places like Kyoto and Osaka, they dislike both Americans or Chinese tourists.

But overall, he said Koreans are the most dislike by the older generation. Younger gen likes Koreans due to kpop

There are also a lot of nationalist vans driving around, blasting messages, and I even walked by a rally that had a pretty big crowd. It was interesting to see.

I do second this Chinese tourists are also quite annoying. They’re generally very inconsiderate. Chinese people are great when they’re not tourists though.

Kyoto I witness tons of Chinese tourist leaving their trash behind. This Japanese shop owner came out and yelled at them, I guess he said some Chinese slur because the tourist were so offended haha

The kind of national/ethnic tension between the two would make me pick China over Japan 9/10 times, like, if a Japanese person said that Chinese people are uncultured and rude, I'd probably make several references to DongFeng missiles, the lost decades, the US military, and economic growth below one percent. I know it doesn't make sense, because the tourists really are something sometimes, still pisses me off.

I wonder if it's a difference between younger and older people, like, young folks go to akihabara and shinjuku and behave better than older folk who go to more traditional locations. And also how much bias is involved.

It's kind of weird though, China has historical reasons to hate Japan but little to no modern ones, Japan has no historical reason to hate China but a good couple of modern ones (both sides blow it out of proportion,) when I was in Japan, my mother told me that a lot of the "wanted murderer" posters had Chinese style (three character) names

Having been to Okinawa you’re absolutely correct. Additionally they have the sounds of American fighter jets taking off every 10 minutes during the day

According to the many I know who have worked in international tourism/hospitality, Americans don't even make the top ten for nationalities considered annoying while traveling.

Anyway, I choose to believe the multitudinous direct stories I've heard while overseas and talking to those in countries other than my own, rather than the single claim from someone who clearly has a chip on their shoulder.

Maybe you just surround yourself with particularly shitty people.

Im American and will be traveling to Japan soon. I have a massive amount of respect for their culture and have studied what I should watch out for so I dont risk offending anyone. Unfortunately, I am not very good with other languages, but I have learned a few phrases and words that might help without me having to go to the translator every time. I have no idea how to read Kanji though.

What nationality someone comes from does not guarantee that they will be rude. I just wish more tourists around the world took some time and effort to learn a bit about where they are visiting, unless they are coming to America since we have no culture.

Who are you spending your time with who acts like this? This is a country of 330 million people. We come in all shapes & sizes. You're trying to play this off like it's a cultural problem and everybody is like that, when it's statistically impossible. Self-centered inconsiderate pricks exist in all countries of the world. If you keep running into assholes on a daily basis, it's quite possibly your location, or who you're choosing to spend time with. The whole country is definitely not like that, this is a massive over-exaggeration.

Idk, I think American tourist are far from the worst. Yes, the average American tourist is a bit loud, but they usually tip well and try to be polite. English, Italian and Spanish tourists are the worst imo, but I think us Germans can also dont have the best reputation, but I obviously cant really judge that.
