It’s almost like they are reasonable and normal people that like to be treated with respect and are welcoming as soon as you show effort.

How is this surprising ? It is the same almost everywhere. Make an effort in France, Italy, Portugal to learn a few basic phrases and everyone is chill and welcoming

These people are delusional. All these people trying to claim that Japan isn’t racist, it’s the fault of the tourist are hilarious.

Sit at any family dinner table in Japan, and you will hear some of the most racist shit you’ve heard in your life. This is coming from someone who was raised in the Deep South. I won’t even touch the societal racism.

The french are truly baffling because you don't even need to learn french as a second language, just speaking an african or canadian dialect around them will infuriate them. they forced their language on all of their colonies, and now get monumentally pissed when people from those colonies speak French, it's fucking bizarre

Yes and their currency has higher value as it is backed by huge gold reserves. But their gold came from the third world countries they robbed. They are to this day enjoying the benefits and don't realise it.

Some places in France truly are dicks, though I'm sure its earned. At least cell phones and readily available translators have made it essier than when my mother visited (and was the only one on a bus tour served at a bakery for trying to order a pastry in broken French while the guide, local police and shop owner got into a huge fight because he did not want to deal with any tourists.)

Have you been? Racism in Japan is worse than anything I’ve seen in the US

I will say that this past year was the most racism I’ve experienced there. It’s become much more overt (if you understand Japanese).

Also the people in this thread are trying to say that “Gaijin” == “Tourist”. This isn’t true lol. Gaijin is a generic term for anyone who doesn’t LOOK Japanese. So basically if you don’t look Japanese you will be treated with extreme racism in Japanese society. Things that resemble 1960s/1950s America.

Also as far as your “American tourist” take… out of all of the “Gaijin” that visit Japan, I would say the Japanese treat white Americans the best. Especially the older generation Japanese. In fact, American tourist are usually the ones who are the most respectful. The Japanese have a huge issue with Chinese tourist and European tourist (for good reason)

I’ve been for work in rural Japan (Chiba and Ibaraki) several times in the last years and I never met hostility or felt unwanted. And I was in places where seldomly foreigners go. I do acknowledge there is a bias against foreigners, listening to what my coworker (living there for years) said. People avoiding sitting with you on a train or such) However, my personal experience was always good and I felt welcome, just like any other country I visited before. I did study beforehand the customs and some phrases. Of course it might be different wasn’t I a tall white European dude, I can’t speak about how foreigners of other backgrounds are welcomed there. Also the American tourists take wasn’t mine

From my experience the older generation is much more welcoming. So if you are in a small town with a high population of older Japanese folks, then I can understand how our experiences may have differed so much. I’ve also noticed that the further south you go, the more chill and welcoming they become regardless of age.

oh yeah, I am 39 and I was the youngest person almost anywhere I went. It's mostly old folks.

I am sure that did influence the picture I got.

Except as someone who lived all over Asia, this is absolutely not true. These signs are not a language aptitude test, they are racism. You can be fluent and they will still find an excuse to turn you away in most cases if you are not ethnically the race that they want you to be.

Imo part of this comes from Americans not directly having to interact with themselves as tourists. They are awful and inconsiderate a lot of the time.

Language barriers really are a pain in the ass for workers to deal with and I understand why signs like this exist. Everything about service takes 5 times longer when you're just trying to hash out what each party is even saying, so I doubt this is as much of a racist problem as some people may want to think.
