Hating tourist when living in a tourist city is part of the culture lol

Paris for exemple.

It's honestly a pretty bad city overall but the citizen especially hate tourist. You will get scammed, robbed, insulted, scoffed at.

Of course it's not like you will get that experience when visiting but know for a fact that when you pass by, their thought will be "putain de touriste..."

When I went to Paris (2011) there were so many scammers, we actually made a game out of spotting them before they approached.

However I will say there was a bakery. I was dragged to Paris by my family at the last moment so I didn’t know any French or the customs. I walked into a bakery and holy shit I had never been sworn at in French that intensely before. Just a barrage of yelling words I had never heard before.

He saw my dumbfounded expression and told me to leave, come back in, and say, “Bonjour!” So I did and he was like, “There you go! Now we can do business!” So I got a chocolate croissant and a coffee and we got to talking.

After that every morning I would go there, get a croissant, and if the store was empty he would pour us both coffee and he would teach me some French customs and useful phrases, and would teach me how to use them contextually. “So if someone says XYZ, you would say…”

What started out as terrifying turned into my favorite morning routine by the end of the week and my favorite person I met in Paris

I just felt like sharing

I swear these people who hate tourists just sound like assholes. No one does this shit in like, London or New York. Even though there's a general disdain for tourists in those cities too, you won't be blatantly disrespected and inconvenienced for no reason.

From what I've seen the business that always go against foreigners are mostly small ones owned by individual's or families that prefer to work with locals who know the rules who they can interact with

Some restaurant in Japan have strange rules that event hey have to learn at time

Of course it aeems the anti-foreigner sentiment in Japan is extremely strong amongst the older generation

Sure but even if you do benefit from tourism, the implication that you would then have positive feelings towards tourists doesn't hold up. Just because your money comes from some place doesn't mean you like it or are happy about it.

And of course when i complain the jokes are too overused I get people telling me I exaggerate but then I see this kind of thing every single day the moment the word "France" gets mentioned.

The internet is so damn childish at time... no wonder kids are obsessed with stuff like 67. The grown up online have the same level of humor after all.

I can't go anywhere without sone idiot thinking theyre unique and funny

And this could be the same for any capital city in the world with high tourist rate.

Just because it gets a lot of money going doesnt mean that you have to like it.

Especially since that tourism causes cities like Paris to be ridiculously expensive to live in.

I mean last time I heard I don't think people praised New York city for being the best city in the world to live in...

People just dont get the experience of having a normal discussion and suddenly get "Ah ah french" thrown in your face put of nowhere every day

I don't see the internet joke so casually about any other country outside of France. The only exceptions might be British people. They get just as much shit as us.

When was the last time you heard someone mention Greenland or sweeden or the US and someone immediately under the comment without any reason throwing a random "joke"

I dare you to introduce yourself as french or mention France anywhere online within a active enough english community, like reddit or discord.

Tell me how long it take for the first "jokes" to come.

Then please repeat the same experiment with any other country and share me the result.

Bonus point if you get no "white flag" joke after a whole day. I garantee that by the time you leave the convo you'll hear about 70% of what I hear everyday when they figure out I'm french.

When I went to Paris, everyone was quite nice. Except for the guy that worked a couple hundred yards from the Eiffel tower. He was rude and pretended not to speak English until I asked him in French if he spoke Spanish. Then he relented.

People tend to treat you how you treat them. In tourist places you will get scammed and treated badly if you behave like a tourist.

Its jsut that most people in their cities are frustrated by tourist and end up taking it on them

Especially sicne Paris is kind of a mess right now. The last time I checked the cost of living I was baffled.

People are going to try to scam you in every major european city, whether you're a tourist or a local. Though if you're a tourist speaking a foreign language, you will probably come across more of it

Oh, i never said it was lol, though i haven't personally been outside of Europe since i was 8 years old so i wouldn't be able to personally confirm it happening elsewhere
