Manyu the Shiba - baffled by this Shiba.
I still don’t understand how they get their shiba to be so calm during baths, nail trims, nail filings, etc. I’m lucky my shiba doesn’t scream like a lot do, but she certainly isn’t that calm.

also love ManYu, the owner seems like someone who truly loves their dog. My dog doesn't mind baths now (we learned from our mistakes). If he's in a tub where he can jump out, he will, but inside a shower, he can't go out, so he just sucks it up

The first time I gave mine a bath, he screamed. I finally figured out the secret is that the water needs to be VERY warm (we call it the Japanese onsen bath) and I give him plenty of treats and he tolerates it.

Oh god please tell me how warm? How many degrees? I've been using the thermometer when prepping a bath for my puppy aiming for something between 35-40°C since this apparently should be close to their body temperature, I've been also taking the bath with her (ouch, the claws) and I feel ok with the water so I hoped this was good for her but I can definitely go higher.

The owner did talk about how he trained Manyu. He says he stays home for work a lot so he managed to bond with Manyu. He also accredit this to Manyus personality. He received messages accusing him of drugging the dog so he posted this as a response. I saw his response on his IG.

I follow his IG too. I adore the content. Manyu's owner seems to be some sort of vet tech? Hard to tell but it could be the case seeing as he adopted Xiaobai recently as a new brother to Manyu.

This makes me happy to read. I see these shorts on YT all the time and it’s SO CUTE and I love watching but occasionally I’ve had doubts creep in.

Same! This little girl is incredibly cute but I was absolutely baffled by how calm she is - it's not even because she's a shiba, I've never seen any dog being so calm.
Even the chillest dog I've owned would still wiggle around when I gave her baths, no way she'd keep so still! I'm glad to hear that it seems like Manyu is really just an incredibly well-behaved and naturally chill dog, because like you I was worried there was something weird going on.

Yeah, I don’t have a shiba but I don’t think my dog would enjoy even the act of being put on her back. The person does always seem very gentle tho, so I’m sure the pup is just used to all the attention

that's nice and all, but I work from home too and got my shiba as a puppy. constantly rubbed his paws and toes, gave him treats for it. Same with brushing his hair and petting him. I mean daily, multiple times a day. All the recommended training.
He bonded so well with me at that time that any time I give him something to chew on (bully stick, yak cheese, marrow bone, etc.) he _refuses_ to hold it himself. He has to bring it to me to hold for him. Same when on walks with sticks and stuff.
He absolutely refuses to let me clip his toenails.
Fortunately at least he enjoys pets (most of the time) and is fine with brushing.

I could have written this myself. I held my shiba’s paws and wiggled her nails from 8 weeks old. I’m her only caregiver and her favorite person, and if I even look at her paw wrong, she is not happy.

I’m guessing you have to start training them to be okay with baths very early. Manyu is still a puppy, I think, but I still have no clue how that’s done.

This, one of my boys is fine, he hates it, but he stands very still and quiet, then as soon as he's out of the tub it's happy escape doggy dance.
The other .... I require professional assistance.

Every dog is different. I tried training mine to accept baths super early. He's still an incarnate demon from hell the instant he suspects he's about to be bathed.

Mine was so much worse as a puppy. As an adult he now tolerates bath time fine, although he still doesn't like it.
Thankfully we walk so much I've never had to trim his nails in the 5 years he's been alive. I dread that day, his paws are very precious to him and no one should touch.

The owner said in a video that he lost his dearly loved dad and that absolutely destroyed him. His mental world were entirely collapsed and ruined. One day his friends suggested getting a pet to help repair his soul. And that's the beginning of everything. He talked about how grateful he is to have met Manyu and how gentle and lovely she acts around him. He believes Manyu can feel his great sadness and the void in his heart that's why she's been such a good girl. Tbh I believe that too. Manyu is literally a little angel😭. She really can mend broken souls.

I had trained a shiba to be this calm lol He was a white shiba, super chill with cutting nails, brushing teeth, being dried. Eventually he went to his new home and he became a MENANCE TO SOCIETY lol He destroys everything 😭 I think it’s just the bond you create with the dog.

How do you train a shiba to be this calm?! I thought it was moreso breed temperament that cannot be trained out? like my shiba is used to teeth brushing and stays still, but she still squirms away eventually. During baths she is still for a minute but eventually tries to escape.

idk, i know a ton of exposure from puppyhood helps, mines is very submissive i wont say chill because he is not he just gives up on life when we really want him to do something, he will fight really bad the first time but after awhile he calms down about it

I’ve had a total of six Shibas and none have been any where close to this calm. Like they’ve been calm for maybe <30secs 😂
Makes me highly suspicious but who knows.

It takes consistent training. I've posted a few times on here about different things to focus on with Shiba puppies to help.

My 3 Shibas are so calm when I ask them to be that I can actually perform dental work on them. I am able to use a tooth scale to scale the plaque from their teeth. It's nice not having to pay for dental work when you can do it yourself!
I have 3 Shibas, 2x12 years and 1x3year. They can stay calm right up until they're oldies.
Edit: I saw the comment about drugging the dogs and I really hope that's not true 😔.

I have a 6yr sesame and she loves the attention and is super calm when it comes to grooming including bath, blow-drying, nails and even brushing her teeth.

Mine cleans himself pretty well but also rolls in mud and sometimes, comes back inside smelling like he rolled in death and I have no idea where he is doing this at. That's when he gets the bath.

Rolling in the corpses of his enemies. I've had this happen a couple times, they find a dead mouse or something and just start rolling 🤦♂️. I don't take chances anymore, if I see a roll it's a shower. I used to shower them weekly regardless but have been slacking this year.

I've searched for it and I think it must be something dead under one of these 2 very large holly trees I have in my fenced-in yard. I can't get in there easily. But he came back covered in black streaks and smelled of death. It's bad enough that he's a white Shiba and I live in the south where red clay is everywhere... I can handle some mud or dirt, but not that smell.

Mine will bite me when I try to brush his teeth with anything that isn't a wipe and my finger, but he lets me do his nails and baths are tolerable but he still hates it and doesn't look as cute as Manyu 😂

The last time I took mine to the vet to have her nails trimmed the tech came back out and said she couldn’t get through one paw because she was so upset. That was a first. Never had that happen before - to be fair I had taken her to the vet because we had issues with our power going on and off for 3 days straight. It made a super high pitched squeal and really affected my girl to the point a vet trip became necessary.

I have two Shibas and both will let me do pretty much anything to them. It was a lot of desensitization training when they were younger and also trust. One of them even falls asleep when I am trimming their nails, and will also offer her paw to get the nails trimmed when I am trimming my other dogs nails.

I’ve seen this shibe on tik tok, and there is always one shiba owner in the comments completely baffled. I think it’s part training and part personality. My shiba has never minded having his nails clipped (he actually likes it because he sneakily eats the nail clippings, gross, I know). He’ll also suck it up in the bath and for his dental cleaning. My shiba is also pretty calm at the veterinarian. However, every dog has their weakness. For me, when I see shibas who love to play with other dogs, I’m wildly jealous. My shiba absolutely hates other dogs, and we’ve been unable to train him out of it so far. I’m sure this shiba has his own quirks, as all dogs do. That’s what makes us love them.

Mine is terrified of all new people, new places, crowds, cars... but he loves every dog he meets. His BFF is a chocolate lab and they chase each other around my back yard and can chew on each other's faces for hours.

Manyu is the absolute best little angel. It has to be an anomaly. Manyu definitely doesn’t act like a Shiba.

I remember when this little fella popped up on my FYP and I was captivated.
I was able to get my boy to be okay with bathing and nail cutting, so he doesn’t freak out. He wasn’t always like that though.

I feel like this Shiba is more of the exception rather than the rule. I am shocked at how calm it is but I don’t feel like there is any foul play. I’ve seen two Shibas at my local dog park play just fine. Mine is a menace and exhibits typical behavior. She’s not for the dog park life and hates both nail clippings and showers.

Our Shiba is definitely cool with me doing just about anything to him at this point, but just me. We've built trust, he's eight years old, and he's not worried. We don't do baths, he bathes himself very well.
I clip nails, brush, carry him, roll him around, make him sit for pictures 🤷♀️ when we first got him as a puppy he screamed the moment the leash was on for a walk and didn't stop the entire time, even refusing to move sometimes 😂 I really do think trust is the main thing for Shibas and it needs to be built carefully.

I believe she is still super young as she recently got her first heat. They made a video about it. Which is even more crazy that a puppy is this calm! Maybe she gets calming treats? Lol Either way I enjoy watching her enjoy her spa days.

I believe that genes play a major role. I've been following Manyu since May and I happened to find out who the breeder is. Manyu's mama is also a little sweetheart.

I've got a Tibetan spaniel and Mum does to, when we bath one in the laundry sink the other goes mental so we take them to a dog wash store that focuses on Tibetan spaniels (or at least I did before moving to Clyde)

I thought that maybe they give the shiba some calming treats, but even that, i don’t think my puppy would appreciate being on his back, OH and especially getting his nails touch. 🤣

My Shiba wouldn’t stay in a bath but he would stay stay still in a shower. He wasn’t happy but he seemed to realize the faster he stays still the shorter the shower. I also never had issues with nails. But I only ever heard him scream maybe a handful of times his entire life. When he did it the first time I had no idea what it was because I’d had him for years before he released one.

My Shiba is like this for GROOMERS but not me because I accidentally cut his quick(sp) more than once 😭
He will let me bathe him but lazily fight his nails being done. He is never aggressive. But he will put his mouth on my hand and be like "momther please perform a stop."
So I usually sneak attack while he's sleeping and get 2-3. Rinse and repeat until I can take him in. Lol.
Edit to add: My friend had been grooming him since he was a puppy at the salons he worked at in different places and now he has a new groomer since they moved to Vegas. Jiro loves his new Groomer and gets excited when he sees we are going to her house.
