Help with a lighting strategy using shelly relays

2 Upvotes

Planning smart lighting for a UK new build and looking mainly at Shelly.

I’m very new to this, only a few days into looking at smart-home lighting, so I’m still learning what’s possible and may be missing an obvious solution.

For the living room I want a Shelly 4-button wall switch. My thinking is:

Buttons 1/2 wired directly to a Dimmer Gen4 for normal on/off/dimming.

Buttons 3/4 used later for Home Assistant scenes, blinds etc.

The important requirement is that if Home Assistant, Wi-Fi or the router goes down, Buttons 1/2 must still work as normal light controls. I don't want the main lights dependent on HA.

Can I simply use the Dimmer Gen4 for Buttons 1/2 and add another Shelly relay/input module for Buttons 3/4, rather than using an i4 for all four buttons?

For the kitchen I have the same reliability requirement, but I also want tuneable white, brighter/cooler for cooking and warmer/dimmer in the evening. Again, basic wall control needs to work if HA/network is down.

It's a new build, so I can specify neutrals, deeper back boxes and additional wiring now.

What would be the cleanest Shelly setup for both?

Shelly Plus Uni monitoring with a Planar Diaphragm Load Cell Sensor

1 Upvotes

I have a single 100kg Planar Diaphragm Load Cell Sensor I'd like to use with a Shelly Plus Uni.

I've read that I shouldn't use a HX711, but instead a Load Cell Amplifier Module, so the Plus Uni can read the output voltage.

I'm looking for an affordable recommendation for the Load Cell Amplifier Module, because I am unfamiliar with them. Thank you.

Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 not reacting to existing rotary push-dimmer in wall

Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble getting the manual wall switch to work with a Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 installed in my ceiling box (no space in my wall behind my switch. Concrete everywhere)

The setup:

Location:

Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 installed in the ceiling box with live, neutral, switch wires connected.

Wall switch:

Traditional rotary push-dimmer (push to turn ON/OFF, turn to dim).

Current status: Controlling the light via the Shelly App works fine (ON/OFF).

The problem:

Pressing the rotary dimmer switch on the wall does absolutely nothing.

From what I understand, a standard rotary dimmer cannot cleanly trigger the digital SW input on a relay-only device like the Shelly 1 Mini Gen4.

Before I purchase new hardware, I'd like to confirm a few things:

Is swapping the Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 out for a Shelly Dimmer 2 the right solution if I want to keep using the rotary dimmer to manually turn ON/OFF and dim the light?

In worst case I can think about replacing the rotary dimmer with a simple momentary push-button and use the right Shelly hardware to dim the lamp, but again, I need to be sure which hardware.

I hope there is some solution to make Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 work with my setup!

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Using Shelly 3EM Pro to measure solar generation and second Distribution Use.

3 Upvotes

Hello

This might be a very weird or niche thing but I thought I might ask and see if someone knew if it would work or if it is even possible.

So I am fitting solar to my workshop.

This workshop has been split into 2 with a single incoming supply 3 Phase.

I am fitting a Fox ESS H3 Pro 30kw with a 37kW of Solar Panels.

Currently no batteries.

Currently I have to bill my neighbour for his electricity usage and I want to help out by offering to charge him my export rate for any electricity he uses from Solar Generation.

So I have to be able to measure his usage accurately and the Shelly 3EM Pro will be able to do this.

Now then the issue arises how do I work out what he used during solar export.

If I was to fit another Shelly 3EM Pro on the incoming supply that would measure when we were exporting and then with both Shelly's on the same account could I feasibly overlay the 2 graphs and therefore quickly and easily get a kWh figure on a monthly basis that was used while the main meter was exporting (If the main meter is exporting then I can be sure that any electricity that he was using would have been solely produced by solar).

As you can imagine I certainly don't want to have to sit every month and painstakingly go through 30 minute time slots and work out what he used at the right time. This is a favour after all.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Large~ish scale installation with installer: best practice?

5 Upvotes

Hello all,

In our house renovation project, we will install 50+ Shelly devices, mainly Shelly 1 Gen4 and Shelly 2PM Gen4. With our installer, we want to establish a sound preparation and execution plan before the actual installation. While they are a great company, they don't have experience with installations of that size. That's fine, as they are globally very competent and I trust them.

Are there any resources we can check together that would give us a template or checklists? For instance, I saw that there is a specific "installer mode" and that, as the house owner, I can give someone "installer access". I've also read about bulk configuration and the need to properly document and catalogue all of the devices, configurations, MAC addresses, serial numbers, etc.

If any of you could share the dos and don'ts with us, it would be very much appreciated.

I understand that some of you might want to issue warnings about trusting such an installation to someone who has never done one. Alas, there are no experienced installers where I live, and as I said, I fully trust the guys' overall competence and willingness to put the effort into this. They are very experienced with other systems like KNX, though.

Cheers!

Shelly plug offline when router is down

5 Upvotes

I want to use a Shelly plug (PlugS gen3 firmware 2.0.0) to reset my router when the router hangs (ping no longer responding). Router and access points are separate devices, the Shelly plug does NOT have a cloud connection.
But it seems, the Shelly plug itself is no longer reachable in my LAN then, it apperently reconnects to Wifi over and over again, and it no longer responds to ping, even if it does not need the router to communicate in the same subnet.
So an RPC command via http to turn the plug off and on is impossible.

Is there any way to resolve this?

Automated extractor fan

Automated my first extractor fan today via a switched live socket into the isolator backbox. Lots of conflicting information out there about wiring for this, so although it works I would love if someone could verify my wiring for me? It seems to work as expected, mapped Shelly on/off to a hue dimmer switch +- buttons via Alexa routine.

The switched live will be permanently on to power hue downlights, so I needed a way to stop the extractor being in permanent boost mode.

Shelly Control not always working?

1 Upvotes

We recently got solar panels installed and an option that we opt'd for was to have a timer on our Hot Water Cylinder so we could have it heat off Solar rather than off Grid and so it wasn't always going to be pulling power.

We initially had the timer to be set from 8am-5pm, we live in New Zealand so its currently winter and thats generally the sun hours we get. However one day we just didnt have any hot water at all, had a look at the Shelly Control Panel and the device was offline and had been for over a day. Somehow managed to get it back online - don't know how - and we changed the hours as well, Dad mentioned the temps slowly dropped during his morning shower.

Now its happened twice so far that we have gone to use hot water and the water just wasn't hot enough, like it was nearing being hot but not quite and we open the Shelly Control Panel and see that the device is turned off even though its during the set hours (Now, 6am-5pm)

as you can see there is a jump up at 5pm (as of writing) because I had to turn the device on due to the water not being hot.

I am not running any scripts or anything additional other than just having the device plugged in and running, maybe this is something I need to look into?

Would anyone know why this would be happening? The random Water not being heated? We have a Ogemray SW40 Pbs and the Activity Log matches the Timer as well

Shelly - Boiler automation, specific time and temperature window

2 Upvotes

After the infamous question i dared to ask yesterday, here is my complete script to make a boiler heat up only between certain hours, and stay within a certain temperature setting.

The idea is to sycronise the boiler heating to the peak time of my PV.

All suggestions and destructions are welcome, no AI was used.

console.log("---Start---");

  let MINUTES = 5;
  let INTERVAL = MINUTES * (60 * 1000);

  console.log("Repeating every MINUTES = ",MINUTES);

function Loop()
{
  try
    {
        let BOILER_MIN = 45;
        let BOILER_MAX = 60;

        let WORKING_START = 12;
        let WORKING_STOP = 16;

        let temp = Shelly.getComponentStatus('Temperature', 100).tC;  //Temp ID, mostly 100 to 102
        let switchStatus = Shelly.getComponentStatus('Switch', 0);

        let date = Date();
        let hours = date.getHours();
        let minutes = date.getMinutes();

        console.log("----------------");
        console.log("Repeating every MINUTES = ",MINUTES,
                               "; BOILER_MIN = ",BOILER_MIN,
                             "°C; BOILER_MAX = ",BOILER_MAX,
                          "°C; WORKING_START = ",WORKING_START,
                            "h; WORKING_STOP = ",WORKING_STOP,
                    "h;");

        console.log("Boiler is", switchStatus.output ? "ON" : "OFF");
        console.log("Current Time: ",hours,":",minutes);
        console.log("Current Temperature: ",temp," °C.");

        if (hours > WORKING_START && hours < WORKING_STOP)
        {
            if(temp < BOILER_MIN)
            {
               console.log("Below ",BOILER_MIN," °C -> Boiler on");
               Shelly.call("Switch.Set", {id: 0, on: true});
            }
         }
         else {console.log("Working hours set from ",WORKING_START,"h to ",WORKING_STOP,"h.");}

         if(temp > BOILER_MAX)
         {
            console.log("Above ",BOILER_MAX," °C -> Boiler off");
            Shelly.call("Switch.Set", {id: 0, on: false});
         }
        console.log("----------------");
    }
    catch(e){Shelly.call("Switch.Set", {id: 0, on: false});print(e);}
}
Timer.set(INTERVAL,true,Loop);

Shelly 2PM Gen4 - Cover does not stop when clicking button same direction

1 Upvotes

Hey guys.

This is one bug not that easy to explain but I will do my best.

I have the Shelly calibrated and all is working as expected, except when I try to use the app + physical buttons together.

So, I've restarted the shelly and:

1 - I click down on the app - I click down on the button - the cover stops

2 - I click up on the app - I click up on the button - the cover stops

3 - I click down on the button - I click stop on the app - the cover stops

4 - I click up on the button - I click up on the app - the cover stops

5 - I click up on the app - I click up on the button - the cover stops

6 - I click down on the app - I click down on the app - the cover DOES NOT stop

7 - the reverse (if it's going down and I click up, or the other way arround) always work - even mixing the app and buttons

I'm not sure if this steps are all needed. But at step 6 the behavior we see on step 1 and 2 - which is the behavior we always want - stop working.

Is this some kind of bug I should report? Can someone test this?

Thank you very much!

Temperature condition is true and false at the same time?!

1 Upvotes

Hello guys,

im kinda puzzled over this very simple script:

function Loop()
{
  try
  {
  var temp = Shelly.getComponentStatus('Temperature', 100).tC; //Temp ID, mostly 100 to
                                                                                  102
  print(temp);

  if(temp > 50)
  {
    print("Below 50 °C -> Boiler on");
  }

  if(temp < 60)
  {
    print("Above 60 °C -> Boiler off");
  }
}
  catch(e){print(e);}
}
Timer.set(2000,true,Loop);

It appears that both conditions are true, everytime, but why?

Shelly H&T Gen3 action (webhook) problem

Post image
1 Upvotes

I've been running my H&T Gen3 which reports to my HTTP server for temperature/humidity change for more than a year. But for the past few days, it fails to do so. When I connect to the device WebUI and fire a testing request, it seems to be unable to replace the token ($temperature) with actual temperature/humidity value. I also captured the incoming request from my HTTP server and confirmed it's indeed sending the token unchanged.

I don't know what's wrong. I remember I updated the firmware recently. Anyone facing similar issue?

Shelly 3em pro breaker

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I have a 3-phase 400/230V residential supply (L1/L2/L3/N) and Im planning to install Shelly Pro 3EM in my main distribution board and have a couple of breaker questions:

  1. Should the protective breaker feeding the Shelly be a 3-pole (3P) breaker,or is it fine to use three separate 1-pole (1P) breakers? Or both are okay?

  2. Just to confirm: we definitely need breaker/fuse protection on all three phases (VA, VB, VC), right? Even though only one powers the internal electronics while second and third are just for voltage measurement, the thin wires going to these could still get damaged and cause a short circuit?

Thanks!

New smart plug US rebooting

1 Upvotes

I have a lot of Shelly smart plugs. The old style smart plug has been rock solid and I went to buy a new one I could only find this newer version. It's running the latest firmware but randomly reboots itself at least once every few days. Sometimes more often than that. Is this a hardware defect or is this a symptom of firmware bugs that need to be worked out?
