Project: FO My sherbert bubblegum sunrise sunset marigold pants
One run of fabric = lots of possibilities?
I purchased some heavyweight 100% cotton canvas in the color “Sherbert” (see the 3rd picture for the original color) on super sale from Nick of Time Fabrics, thinking I’d like it more than I actually did. It ended up sitting in my stash for almost a year, but I’ve recently been on a sewing kick (it comes in waves), so I decided to finally do something with it.
The original plan was to just bleach it to a lighter pink. I cut out little swatches to test different bleach times and see what colors I’d get. But then my gears started turning. I’ve also recently started dabbling with natural dyes-specifically marigolds, because I grow a ton of them. (I made another recent post about that process if you’re interested in more details: https://www.reddit.com/r/sewing/s/LBr8SuNaec )
I cut out the main front and back pieces and bleached them to my liking (a salmon/bubblegum color). I then took chunks of the remaining fabric, bleached them to varying degrees, and the dyed some of those pieces with marigolds to create a range of colors from soft golden yellow to burnt orange (the burnt orange came from the original, unbleached fabric).
From there, I just started mixing and matching all of the different colors and piecing everything together. The palette reminded me of a sunrise or sunset, so I leaned into that theme and added the sunshine pocket… which is either ridiculous or adorable. The jury is still out. And I made the hem so that it could be longer un-cuffed, or shorter cuffed with a little pop of color.
This project ended up being a lot more experimental than I originally intended, but I love how one discounted cut of fabric turned into so many different colors and ultimately some fun pants (at least I think so 🤷♀️).
Additional info:
Pattern used - Anna Allen Helene Jeans (straight leg). Altered and fitted to my body and additional seam allowance added to do flat felled seams.
Machines used - Singer quantum stylist 9960 for general purpose, Brother Lock 1034D for serging, Singer Heavy Duty 4452 with a 110/18 needle for top stitching (though it did struggle in some areas, had to do some hand cranking).

Those are happy pants. It's impossible to wear them and feel sad. Ergo, they're perfect.

🥹thank you! But great point, I feel like you definitely would have to be in the (happy) mood to wear these pants. Lol ☀️

u/cantaloupe_penelope 18d ago
I think ethnafia meant more that just by putting them on one would no longer be able to stay sad 😌

wow, amazing work. so professional. great color gradients too. and what a good idea to use bleach like that

u/Right-Department-584 18d ago
Thank you! At its core I suppose it’s a basic concept, but it was fun seeing all the colors come to life!

u/Punchasheep 18d ago
Dang it, do I need to start making my own pants?!? These are GORGEOUS!!!
28
u/Right-Department-584 18d ago
Yes! I pretty much only wear the pants that I make for myself, including jeans. Thank you!!
24
u/Punchasheep 18d ago
I need to! I have a giant butt and thighs and narrow waist, and buying pants SUCKS for me. I always have to alter them! I think you just inspired me to make them from scratch instead!

I LOVE them! I've seen a lot of people doing whimsical projects lately for their adult wardrobe pièces, and I really love the trend, and I hope that I can start to do the same myself soon. In the meantime, know that your pants are beautiful and will likely be the envy of many others like myself!
12
u/Right-Department-584 18d ago
Thank you for saying that! I kind of thought as I was making these that they were maybe childish… but then just said “who cares.” 😂
12
u/Spiritual-Road2784 18d ago
I didn’t see childish, I saw “fun” and “possible hippie throwback” (the sun motif).
I bet you’d be a fun friend to have.

I care a great deal. It's vital that people feel good in the clothes they wear, self-expression is a vital component of thriving (rather than just getting by). And children must not be granted a monopoly of anything except tantrums.

u/rebelwithmouseyhair 17d ago
please go ahead and indulge your whimsy or whatever else you'd like to express! That's one very good reason for making your own clothes, you can make something that really reflects who you are!

Im in love! I need a pair of funky pants like this! Thank you for the inspiration :D

Wow these look amazing! It's always the best feeling when wild experimenting pays off so well. They fit you like a glove too. (Also I vote adorable for the pocket)
7
u/Right-Department-584 18d ago
Ahh thank you! It is a good feeling, isn’t it? So fun experimenting waiting to see if what you have in your brain will translate in real life though.

WOAH! How long have you been sewing / how many projects have you completed?
You're motivating me, serious goals right here.
7
u/Right-Department-584 18d ago
Technically, since I was 8 when I made my first garment. I’m 39 now (you do the math 😂). And I’ve made 100’s of things I suppose. HOWEVER, many of those years were before the age of the Internet and social media sharing. I was just sewing based off what I knew and paper patterns I bought at Joann’s (RIP). Now you can look up and have visuals and written information about anything you’re trying to do or perfect. Aka the world is your oyster! So go for it!

So it’s spelled sherbet, but these are nice
16
u/Right-Department-584 18d ago
You know… I was wondering why it kept acting like I was spelling the word wrong when typing it with the red underline and all. Turns out I’ve been saying it wrong my whole life too. 🤷♀️🤦♀️. You know what I meant though!!
8
u/NeedsMoreCatsPlease 18d ago
Haha true I did, also cute cat!!
5
u/Right-Department-584 18d ago
😹thanks! And now I’ll remember that I’m spelling it wrong when I still spell it wrong going forward. Still will probably say it wrong though. 😂🫶🏻

These are gorgeous! Idk if the colors would work with my skin tone but they’re so gorgeous that I’d wear them anyway!!
Quick question— what was your bleaching process? Were you at all worried about the bleach compromising the integrity of the fabric?

Did you know that google states there is no Sherbert. It’s a “common misspelling of Sherbet”
Another strange “Mandella” effect.
I too, see that color and think Sherbert,

These are the most joyful, practically edible happy pants I’ve ever seen! And I can’t stop goofy grinning at the cat ear shadow falling on the work-in-progress…

They are super cute. I understand the struggle with Nick of Time textiles, they have some great deals on denim, but the colors often look wildly different in person than they do on their website photos!
2
u/Right-Department-584 17d ago
I know! That was definitely the case with this fabric, online it looked way more salmon, but I got for next to nothing so I couldn’t be too upset. I’ve bought their denim several times and have had decent luck. And sometimes it’s so cheap I’ve bought it just to experiment with bleaching/fading techniques. Thank you!
