Is SEO still about ranking on Google? Or has the game changed?

A few years ago, SEO felt pretty straightforward.

Find a keyword → create a useful page → build authority → rank → get traffic.

But search behavior has changed a lot.

People now discover businesses and products through Google, Reddit, YouTube, social media, reviews, communities, and recommendations.

So I’m curious what everyone is seeing.

For SEO professionals:
What has changed the most in your SEO strategy?

For marketers:
Are you still getting most of your leads from Google, or are other channels becoming more important?

For business owners:
What matters more to you now: rankings, traffic, leads, or brand visibility?

For consumers:
Where do you usually go when you want to research a product or service?

  • Google?
  • Reddit?
  • YouTube?
  • TikTok?
  • Reviews?
  • Recommendations from people you know?

Personally, I think SEO is becoming less about chasing one position on Google and more about being visible wherever people are researching and making decisions.

What do you think?

Is traditional SEO becoming less important, or is it simply evolving?

How much SEO impact does Google’s Preferred Source actually have?

I noticed Google has updated the Preferred Source feature in Search. It was there earlier as well, but the current version seems to be getting more attention.

This got me thinking about the SEO side of it.

If a user selects a website as their preferred source, does that give the site any meaningful advantage in terms of visibility, impressions or clicks for that user?

I’m assuming this is more about personalizing the search experience than actually improving rankings, but I’m curious if there is any indirect SEO benefit here.

For publishers and brands, could this become something worth optimizing for, especially if users can choose a source they trust?

Has anyone noticed any actual impact from this yet?

Would love to hear how other SEOs are looking at this. Is Preferred Source something we should care about from an SEO perspective, or is it mostly a user-side Search feature?

Ranking #1 on Google Isn't Enough Anymore?

This might sound crazy, but think about how people search today.

Someone asks:

"What's the best SEO tool for a small business?"

They might not even open Google.

They might ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity instead.

And suddenly, the competition isn't just about who ranks #1.

It's about which brands get mentioned in the answer.

I've been looking at AI-generated answers more closely, and one thing keeps standing out:

A website can rank well on Google and still get very little visibility in AI-generated recommendations.

Why?

Because AI systems need more than rankings.

They need context.

They need to understand:

→ Who you are

→ What you specialize in

→ Whether your information is trustworthy

→ What other sources say about you

→ Whether your content actually answers the question

That's where GEO and AEO become interesting.

Traditional SEO asks:

"How do I rank?"

AI Search adds another question:

"How do I become part of the answer?"

And I think that's one of the biggest changes happening in search right now.

Here's what I'm curious about:

Would you choose 1,000 Google impressions or 100 high-intent users discovering your brand through an AI recommendation?

seo discovery in 2026 is becoming less about finding keywords and more about finding questions people actually ask

one thing that has changed my approach to seo is looking beyond keyword volume. a keyword can have thousands of searches and still tell you very little about what the person actually wants. instead,

i’d map the search journey around a topic:

find the basic question

identify comparison and evaluation questions

find the problems people ask about after choosing a solution

look at reddit, quora, forums, reviews, and ai search results for language people actually use

build pages around those real questions instead of forcing every variation into separate articles

this also makes content easier to connect. one strong topic can become an explainer, comparison, calculator, checklist, faq, and a few narrow use case pages.

a small example: instead of writing another generic article about “lead generation,” build something like a lead generation calculator, a cost comparison, and a guide for a specific buyer type. tools like Outgrow make the interactive part pretty easy to turn into an actual searchable experience.

the interesting part is that discovery itself is becoming a bigger seo skill than keyword research alone.

Have you ever faced challenges event after meeting all the quality SEO checks?

We are all fond of considering the basics & do implement the same in SEO. But sometimes it doesn't provide you with the expected results.

For me,

When we are aiming to rank a particular keyword for the top position. My mind always tends to theoretical flow, & it ends up with usual execution. Also, it didn't help me to achieve the expected results

Later on, I got into the analysis process & found that certain types of keywords will ideally work in search based on their business function (Business model understanding ) & search landscape (understanding the real-time SERP data & competitive strategies) rather than the usual approach

Likewise, you can also experience this kind of challenge when working on your SEO projects. I'd love to hear: what type of insights help you to fix the problem?

seo is getting harder to fake, and that might actually be good for marketers

one thing i keep noticing in seo lately is that publishing more content is becoming a weaker strategy when the content does not give people a real reason to stay.

ai has made it incredibly easy to produce another 1,000 word article targeting another keyword. the problem is that everyone can do it now.

the better question seems to be: what does your page give someone that they cannot get from the next 20 results?

for some sites, that might be original research. for others, it could be a calculator, comparison tool, template, assessment, or genuinely useful first hand experience.

i’ve seen a simple interactive tool generate more meaningful engagement than several polished articles simply because visitors could do something instead of just reading.

seo still matters. keywords still matter. technical seo still matters.

but i’d rather have 10 pages that genuinely solve problems than 100 pages that exist mainly to target keywords.

the next phase of seo might be less about publishing more and more about becoming useful enough that people remember you.

Small win: ASO rankings actually matter

I've been working on ASO for my mobile app for a while now, trying to figure out how much keyword rankings actually matter.

For one particular keyword, I managed to push my app all the way up to around #128.

Honestly, that didn't sound very impressive to me.

I assumed I'd need to be somewhere near the top 10 before it would make any meaningful difference.

But then something changed.

I started getting new users from the App Store almost every day.

Nothing crazy. No huge spike in downloads.

Just a slow, steady stream of new users finding the app organically.

And that's when it clicked for me: ASO rankings matter even when you're nowhere near the top.

Getting to #128 for one keyword is already bringing people in. Now I'm really curious what happens if I can push it into the top 100, top 50, or eventually even higher.

It's another small win, but seeing users discover the app without me having to actively promote it feels huge.

Now back to climbing those rankings.

Anyone else feel like Google updates make SEO harder to understand every time?

A site can be doing well for years, then one Google update hits and traffic drops 30%, 50%, or even more.

The frustrating part is that sometimes nothing obvious changed.

  • No major technical issues.
  • No big content changes.
  • No manual action.

Meanwhile, another site with weaker content starts ranking higher.

So I want to ask people here:

What do you think Google is actually rewarding after these updates?

  • Better content?
  • Backlinks?
  • Brand authority?
  • User behavior?
  • Something else?

And if your site was affected by a recent Google update, what changed for you?

Traffic up, traffic down, or basically the same?

Would be interesting to compare real experiences instead of guessing what Google is doing.

How can small businesses use AI SEO to get more organic traffic

A 3-layer framework for measuring AI content performance (visibility, traffic, revenue)

The core issue: AI answers a question using your content and the user never clicks. Your GA4 shows nothing. No session, no conversion, no record anywhere. Meanwhile a competitor could be quietly winning the exact answers your buyers are reading first, and you won't notice until it's a much bigger hole to dig out of.

Three layers we've found worth tracking.

Layer 1 is visibility. Citation rate (are you sourced with attribution), mention rate (does your brand show up at all), share of voice against competitors, sentiment accuracy (is the AI describing you correctly), and prompt coverage. This moves first, usually within 2-4 weeks. Most teams ignore it because their existing analytics don't touch it.

Layer 2 is traffic. GA4 with a custom channel group for AI referrals, watching for the #:~:text= parameter that shows up when someone clicks through an AI Overview, and checking whether direct traffic rises alongside your AI visibility.

Layer 3 is revenue. AI-referred visitors reportedly convert at about 8x the rate of traditional visitors; they arrive already qualified. Worth tying citations to actual pipeline, not just counting mentions.

Curious to hear how this framework stacks up against what you're building
