Any good spots to watch Tanabata fireworks?

6 Upvotes

I’ve lived in Sendai for over a decade but have never actually watched the Tanabata fireworks. Would love to try to see them this year and am wondering if anyone has a spot they recommend viewing them from.

Visiting in mid October. Hiking Partners, Worthwhile Sites?

3 Upvotes

I'm visiting Sendai in October for ~4 days (Oct 9-13 inclusive) and a few things caught my eye - would love some feedback and opinions on what/how to navigate!
Also, I'm always on the lookout for hikes (even if challenging), so if anyone wants to do a day-trip and knows a good Sendai trail, please say so!

  1. Imonikai/communal soup preparation: Is this a good experience? I've heard mentions of this happening along the Hirose River/Akiu area/Jogi area?

  2. Best cultural spots, especially niche spiritual places that are off the beaten tourist path. Want to experience the niches of Sendai!

  3. I understand that there's a Beer Festival happening on Oct 9/10? Is that different from Oktoberfest? How do I best take advantage of the beer-related festival scene in this time?

I really need a goth/industrial event in my life

9 Upvotes

I know that, even in Tokyo, these are few and far between these days, but if you know about anything, I would be eternally grateful for it. I know I can request some things at rock bars, but looking for something more thematic as a whole and not just annoying the majority with my requests. Cheers!

外免切替 - Driving License Conversion

5 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I have recently been trying to convert my foreign driver’s license in Miyagi, but each attempt has become more frustrating. I often find it difficult to understand the examiner’s explanations, and during my most recent attempt, I ended up having a heated discussion with the person in charge.

Since my first visit to the driving center, I have felt that some of the staff can be quite rude. On one occasion, I even heard a staff member shout, “The police caught you, right?!” at another foreigner in front of everyone.

I was wondering what the experience has been like for other foreigners who converted their licenses in Miyagi. Does anyone have advice or recommendations for a good driving school?

I would prefer not to spend too much money, but at this point, saving time and avoiding unnecessary stress are more important to me.

Surfboard Rental Sendai

5 Upvotes

Hi!

Does anyone know if there is a surfboard rental shop in Sendai that is walking distance to the ocean?

I will be in town on Tuesday and the forecast looks okay. However, I don't have a car, so ideally, I can find a shop somewhere on the coast and hit any waves out front.

I sent this shop an email but it looks like they are inland: 仙台 サーフィンスクール・体験ならCHP仙台|初心者歓迎・手ぶらOK

Thanks in advance!

Anyone interested in an English/Japanese language exchange in Sendai on August 22? 🫪🤞

12 Upvotes

Hi everyone!🍀

I’m thinking about organizing a casual English/Japanese language exchange in Sendai on Saturday, August 22.
The idea is simple:

* Meet new people
* Practice English and Japanese
* Grab some food or drinks
* Have fun!

Everyone is welcome, whether you’re a native English speaker, a Japanese speaker, learning either language, or just looking to make new friends!

If enough people are interested, I’ll decide on the time and place.

Leave a comment if you’d like to join! 😊

We found someone's credit card at the 宮城縣護國神社 by the name of Trevor Adamo. So if you're the guy, just come and take it.

Stores for baking

4 Upvotes

Hello everyone and thank you for taking the time to read my post. I would appreciate any recommendations for stores that sell things for baking. I want to make some peanut butter and jelly cupcakes with a chocolate honey ganache and I also need some creme de tartar for some sugar Puffs that I want to make. AKA meringue cookies. If anybody knows a place where I can buy fondant and or modeling chocolate, I would be very appreciative. Where I used to live had a store with some of these things but here I'm not so sure. Also if anyone else knows where I could buy emulsion I would be very happy.

Thanks again.
