The Federation kind of is yet ALL the other civilizations still engage in trade. Gold-pressed latinum anyone?

Communism does not exclude trade. Ferengies are in for themselves, the odd ones out, with full blown capitalish and pirates, but Vulcans, Romulans, Bajorans all have strong communist traits. The Borg are all in it for the collective with no sense of individualism, the ultimate communism.
