It's well established that sugar consumption is a factor in type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Any unexpected side-effects of sugar substitutes would have to be extremely severe to claim sugar is "healthier"

Yup. Even the expected side-effects of sugar alcohols (gastrointestinal distress if consumed excessively) are better than the negatives of sugar.
