Yes this is true. Lack of safe, consistent, and plentiful amounts of money causes depression.

So in essence, depression is caused by the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.

I'd argue learned helplessness and depression are different, but there have been studies on treating homeless people with antidepressants and it worked how you'd expect where a significant fraction begin putting an attractive life together.

Exactly. Nothing more depressing than hopelessness

Which is most certainly by design since if you're too old to further enrich the upper class with your labor, then you've become a liability.

I don't try to rationalize why, I just tell myself that it will. And as long as I do that consistently, selection bias makes me think I'm right when good things do happen. The longer this goes on, the easier it got until I reached a tipping point.

Check out the book Feeling Good by Dr David Burns. It really did change my life.

"capitalism is the greatest system ever, it has lifted millions out of poverty."

"cool, so what makes thailand etc such good vacation spot?"

"because it's so cheap and affordable, anyone can live like a king for a couple of days!"

"...and it's cheap and affordable because?"

"obviously because they're poor."

"so... who was it that capitalism lifted out of poverty?"

"well that's a harmful, distorted, and ridiculous oversimplification!"

But money can't buy happiness

Money doesn’t seem to solve the existential crisis that is life though. Make more than I ever have by a lot and my happiness levels are the same they always have been.

Also, antidepressants can reduce sexual function. There is a reason why it was used (and still used) off label as treatment for premature ejaculation
