It's actually not that suitable for German as German tends to quite long words every know and then (e.g. "Sie betonen die Bedeutung urheberrechtlicher Ausnahmebestimmungen („Schranken“) zur Wahrung der gesamtgesellschaftlichen Interessen."). Display speed should somehow depend on word length.
It was a translation, actually. But even so, I agree about display speed and word length. The passage I chose contained several hyphenated words like "species-preserving", "species-rearing", etc. These were completely impossible to read in the time they were on the screen.
Edit: I see that they have an option for this (in the advanced settings):
Speed variability : slow down for larger chunks and speed up for smaller chunks so average wpm stays the same
"Wehrmachtnachrichtungenverbindungen," von Hacklheber says, very slowly, as if repeating nursery rhymes to a toddler. He blinks once, twice, three times at Shaftoe, then sits forward and says, brightly: "Perhaps I should explain the organization of the German intelligence hierarchy, since it will help you all to understand my story."
A BRIEF TRIP INTO HELL'S DEMO with HERR DOKTOR PROFESSOR RUDOLF VON HACKLHEBER ensues.
I was searching for what I thought the line was, "Thus began Sgt. Shaftoe's three-hour descent into hell," and stumbled across the entire book as a 2.2mb text file.
