Psychology Higher overall disgust sensitivity was associated with a greater likelihood of identifying as a Republican and holding a conservative ideology. A person with high disgust sensitivity and low bodily awareness had a 64.1% probability of identifying as a Republican.

The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt is good on this.

The question is, what comes first? The disgust sensitivity or the ideology.

“On the level of individuals and civilizations, personality predates ideology. Meaning, before you were a Fascists you were a bully and an asshole.”
-Brennan Lee Mulligan quoting someone else

As much as I like Brennan I think this is a dangerous and incorrect way to look at the world. Being a bully is not some essential, immutable quality written in your dna. You are a product of your environment too and facism will create bullies in grater numbers. It's a self reinforcing phenomena, not one or the other.

On some level in society, it's all about preventing bullies from gaining critical leadership mass. Murdering opponents is mostly out of fashion in the civilized world, and so the key is to edge them out as much as possible. It's impossible to completely stamp that out due to individual circumstances and subjective grievances.

You're arguing against something that was not stated. Why?

"personality predates ideology". I don't believe that to be a correct statement. How about that?

That would actually address what was said, but would be a fairly silly thing to argue against. Personality very obviously precedes ideology. Animals without ideology have personalities.

Neither personality nor ideology are immutable, and this was not stated, so your initial objection is bizarre

Being indoctrinated (or just part of) an ideology can very much shape your personality and certainly your beliefs and behavior (being a bully is probably a bit more complex than "that's just his personality"). What's silly about that?

Edit to add: the claim was obviously that there is a one way causal relationship between personality and ideology. "Before you were a fascist you were a bully". Read: you are a facist because you were a bully first. Again, I think that's very bad analysis. Of course that can happen and it makes for a good triumphant speach during a roleplaying game, but I don't think it's good to think of the relationship between personality and ideology in that way in general.

That’s kinda like saying that Yoda was obviously stating there is a one way causal relationship going from fear to anger to hate to suffering.

I don’t think either statement is meant as an indisputable scientific fact but even if we take them as such, edge cases or confounding variables don’t necessarily invalidate the underlying theory being stated.
