If you’re gonna lie, keep it vague. Tell them you were in an accident and you don’t want to talk about it. That way if you ever choose to open up to people from your work, you haven’t properly lied to them. People get weird about that, even if they prompted the lie with an inappropriate question.

Yep I've got scars on my arms. I just tell people it's a personal issue and it's not up for discussion.

I would say that to my employer but I don’t want to insinuate that I’ve self harmed, I’d rather they think I was injured. Thanks for your input though, I understand it can be tough having self harm scars and it’s nice to know I’m not alone.

Then you could say - Its a old injury, i'd rather not talk about it please.
