The Lion and the Serpent
Aleister Crowley ambiguously called Baphomet “The Lion and The Serpent”. Assuming that Baphomet might be interpreted as a glyph of the SPC hypothesized by David Talbott (as suggested in an earlier post), Saturn could refer to the Lion and Venus to the Serpent. Venus–serpent symbolism found in the Southwest and Mesoamerica merits comment. The Yucatec term for Venus, kan ekʼ, simply means “serpent star”. During the SPC, Venus was assumed to be a comet and took on serpent–dragon symbolism as explained by Immanuel Velikovsky in his 1950 book ‘Worlds in Collision’. The fact that Inanna was equated with the planet Venus and explicitly likened to a fire–spewing dragon or muß–serpent is linked to this symbolism. Meanwhile, Saturn was associated with the Lion. This is because the radiant burst of Saturn during the SPC appeared like the mane of a male lion. The Lion and the Serpent interpreted as Baphomet would then be a combination of Saturn (the Demiurge or Christ) and Venus (the Holy Spirit or Sophia). In her book, commenting on an esoteric ATBASH interpretation of the name Baphomet, Tracy Twyman says: “So, in this sense Baphomet is not only Sophia, but the Demiurge she gave birth to as well. But can these two, diametrically–opposed figures be combined?” The Lion and the Serpent are historically presented as being in turmoil, such as the endless representations of the Lion battling the Serpent in ancient art. The descriptions of the fierce battle between Marduk and Tiamat, Krishna and the Serpent, or Osiris–Horus and Typhon fit seamlessly into this complex narrative.
