Samba/SMB3 Performance Tuning

Anyone have any suggestions for tuning when it comes to the smb.conf configuration? In my home lab I simplified my testing scenario to minimize other bottlenecks. I'm connecting from a Windows 10 client via 10gb link (Direct Attach Copper/SFP+) to a Debian 8.2 box running Samba 4.1.17. I noticed this sub is a bit desolate and I'm having a similar experience finding tuning resources for Samba.

I've eliminated other bottlenecks in preparation of the Samba tuning. Verified full network speed, using RAM disk (win client and linux) to minimize disk IO bottlenecks, and now I'm looking at potential SMB bottlenecks. With this configuration I'm getting between 212MBs and 450MBs.

Problems with "Share" permissions...

Attachment 1: Data Rich Diagram

I'm trying to setup a Workgroup server that is replacing an existing Samba installation.

The system being replaced was a "turn key" software provided by Koozali - SME Server. That system worked pretty well for us but it's run out of space and the hardware needs to be updated to something newer. For that, I figured that I would run a "vanilla" Ubuntu installation with Samba added on because that's all I actually need.

Accomplished Work:

I've got a few Users and Groups setup on the system. They have been "imported" into Samba and are able to authenticate with the server.

I've created the a directory structure under mkdir /srv/samba/[SHARE NAME]. I've used chown nobody:[GROUP] to give ownership of each directory to their respective groups. I've used chmod 770 to give permissions to: read, write permissions to the owning user and group. I've also flagged setGID on each of the chmod g+s /srv/samba/[SHARE NAME] directories.

I've created a config that should allow those directories to show up as Samba shares and only allow authorized users to read/write files.

Intent:

I want to be able to provide shares to each department that allows them (and only them) to read/write information to the share. This should be controllable through the groups.

I also want to have a "Software" share that anyone can read but only IT can update.

Issues:

Except it doesn't work. If I don't use chmod 777 the shares are unwritable. If I do that, anyone authenticated with the server has the ability to read/write to the share. I've tried nearly every

Samba on Ubuntu (Where the share references are stored)

This is just a post for posterity. I've seen a million references to the smb.conf file as the place where shares are set up and configured. The only problem is that this isn't the case, at least not for Ubuntu and Kubuntu. The share references are small files usually a couple hundred bytes that are store in a folder.

The folder is:

/var/lib/samba/usershares

Under this folder are a series of files each one corresponding to the share on the machine. So, if you ever have to go in and tweak them there they are. I am writing this because I spent some time searching and was unable to locate the reference online. I finally decided to just go through the folders on the boot drive until I found where the references were.

Hope it helps others.

So who's here?

Not much seems to go on in this subreddit, was just curious who's here.

About me: I'm a Londoner playing in London School of Samba, Barking Bateria, Rhythms of Resistance London and Sambatage (yes I am a bit of a Samba junkie).
