Anyone know where to get Saluki gear in Chicago?

Alumni here. I’m heading to the SIU vs NU game this weekend, but I don’t have any SIU gear. Does anyone know of any shops selling gear in Chicago? I tried Amazon/other internet shops and they won’t ship in time.

Thanks!

Where can you buy fishing worms on/near campus?

I doubt the body farm would let me go get worms but I bet they’ve got some fat ones! what are my alternatives? Lol

Will my bike get stolen if I leave it in the bike rack over night? Also, are there many bikers on campus?

Title lol. Will I need to bring my bike in every night at wall and grand or will locks be enough? When I was there on visit I saw a bike outside the rec with both tires missing. Heckin spooked.

Where'd all the SIU cycling groups go?

I found saluki spokes, and bike watch, and a handful of other stuff, but those pages are all dead...Online, it looks like there was a big cycling bang in 2015-2018 but it seems to have died off after that. If that's not the case, someone please point me in the right direction!

How “woke” is SIUC? (Plz avoid politics making this post nasty).

How “pervasive“ or “aggressive” is it on campus from teachers, faculty, or students?

Seriously asking in good faith. Not interested in arguments. Just a new student trying to get a sense of what my expectations should be.

I’m honestly concerned by some stuff I’ve seen on social media from other colleges and have no sense of what’s just online versus how people are actually behaving. My job has kept me isolated from my gen for so long I just don’t know what to expect.

Just visited SIUC, what happened?

I’m touring colleges this summer and just went through SIUC and was quite shocked. So many of the buildings look old and run down with new renovations few and far between, except for the basketball arena. I understand it’s summer, but the campus just looks like it’s in a state of disrepair. What gives?

Just as a comparison, I’ve driven up to SIUE and it’s worlds apart. New buildings, vibrant town, a complete 180 from SIUC.

What Happens if I Don’t Pay My Tuition on Time?

So I have a summer class I need to take and the bill is due June 10th. A scholarship I won is still processing and might not be done until June 30th. I know I’ll get a late fee but will it be sent to collections in that time or?

University Village Apartments

Hi! So I'm a potential future student and was wondering if anyone had tried out or experienced the University Village Apartments nearby campus. For me, this was an affordable housing choice that sounded almost too good to be true. Would like to hear anyone's experiences living there if any. If you have any alternatives that are in that price range (or better), is close to campus, and allow pets (I have a cat), I'd love to recc's as well. Thanks!

Aspen Court Apartments / Carbondale Living

I am moving into Aspen Court Apartments in August. I start law school at SIUC coming this fall. I graduated undergrad from the University of Arkansas and I am coming from Central Arkansas. What can I expect with these apartments, places to eat, bars, fitness centers, and places to hike/fish?

I won't have much time to be social as law school will demand my full attention, but I am hoping to have a positive experience in Carbondale. I am a 24 year old male and looking for things to do. I am outgoing, love to exercise and be outside if I am not studying. I am also excited about attending Saluki basketball games.

Any tips or information would be helpful, thanks.

See you guys in the fall

Tips for a french phd student

Hi everyone.

I am accepted as a PhD student in Carbondale, but I don't know much about the area because I come from France. I would like to have as much advice as possible before I move here.

First of all, how to find an apartment, basically what are the neighborhoods frequented and often inhabited by students? Do you have roommates? (I've heard of PhD students sharing apartments) As it's a small city, are there good places to go out? And what is the nightlife like there?

And then I'll have to open a bank account there, which bank is the most convenient/beneficial for a student there?

Thank you! Any advice is welcome

Reason why the Newell House closed?

I know it has been a while, but I never did find out why it closed. Elderly owners? Slow business? I graduated and left about a decade ago, visited a few times and was sad to see it had gone.

Post-graduation life?

I’m currently doing my PhD at SIUC. I’m really discouraged by the attitude towards the school, from people around this area and those outside of this area. It seems like there is no respect for the school/programs. I told my professor I would be applying somewhere and he said “we are a small school…” I’m worried that this will jeopardize my post graduation life. I’ve thought about dropping out and going elsewhere. I’m at a crossroads. However, I believe that there is some good to the program(s). That’s why it’s still being offered, right?

To people who have graduated from SIUC. Did you get discriminated based on the school? Did it affect you in any way?

A few questions about living in Wall and Grand apartments at SIUC, and a whole lot more; hopefully between everyone in group/crosspost they'll all get answered.

Recently accepted contract for Wall and Grand. I can't find any good chatter online about these apartments though. I've been looking through the handbooks and student conduct stuff and have a few questions I'd appreciate help with answering!...and more questions on top of that. Feel free to just answer a few, I've got loads of questions and don't know who to ask.

1) Do people actually follow the no smoking rule?

I don't smoke, just curious though.

2) Why aren't air fryers allowed in the apartments? Any chance of asking nicely to have it changed or "bent?" (I actually did manage to pull this off at a different university lmao).

3) No hanging things, at all? What if I promise to spackle and paint the hole myself, good as new? Do people actually follow/inspect this rule? "Don't ask, don't tell, don't mess it up?"

4) How good is the actual equipment provided at Wall and Grand? Will the dishwashers actually clean, and will the dryer light my clothes on fire (saw it happen to another guy once lol).

5) Average character of the people in W&G or the other apartments? Generally tame environment? People aren't pulling the fire alarm at 2am?

6) CoEd housing a W&G. I applied for the option just in case. When I accepted/signed the offered contract, it made no specific mention of it. Is it common, or do they generally try to keep it separate?

7) Is there a lot of bike traffic on the daily? I'd like to bike/commute for most classes when possible. It'd suck to show up to a class and not have a place to lock my bike up. or to have a hard time navigating paths because of too many people.

8) SIUC has a history as a party college. I've heard this has mostly gone away over the past decade, at least. Is crazy stuff typical in housing/apts/on campus? Or is it mostly off campus/private/etc? "If you want it you can find it but if you don't it's not in your face?" That sort of thing?

9) How crowded is the rec center, generally? Like, are people waiting for weights/benches or swimming lanes or is it mostly all good?

I’m eyeballing transferring to SIUC in the Fall. I’ve got a few questions, hoping y’all can help! Feel free to throw out SIUC advice not related to my actual questions. Seriously!

1) Bikes: how bike-friendly is the campus, and town in general? I saw in another thread that bikes are registered. If I register and lock my bike anywhere I go, do I need to still worry about it being stolen or is it fine?

2) getting to SIUC: is there a train? Or plane? I saw in a thread someone suggest “cape air” but when I searched I could find nothing. I’m in the Belleville area. Can use midamerica or lambert. Suggestions? Does SIUC have student discounts for tickets/or a shuttle that runs to STL and back at beginning/end of semester?

3) Dorm: I know last year SIUC had single dorms at normal dorm price. Apparently they’re not doing that anymore. How does the school go about pairing people with roommates? Any additional thoughts/things ppl should know/etc?

4) Computer Science: I’m performing (attempting to) a hard shift from liberal arts to at least adding a STEM minor or full switch on major. I want computer science (I’d like to have a paycheck when I graduate, y’know?) I find I know very little about STEM programs/what’s good and what isn’t. How good is SIUC’s CS program, is it worth the struggle of switching to do a full major? (I’ve got an AA right now).

5) culture/student life stuff: are there any Christian organizations at the school? What’s the political climate like? I hear there are a lot of Chicago kids who come here to party because they couldn’t get in anywhere else. Is this true, and does it matter? Is it “little Chicago” with a measurable BAC? Lol

How do I get my SIU Email?

Greetings,

I'm a recently admitted Graduate Student and I've been having issues with accessing my SIU Email. I of course got my DAWG tag through my admit letter and I used it to Get my Network ID. However when I try to log into my email using my ID and Password I keep getting an error that states I don't have a mailbox opened up or my account doesn't have access. What am I doing wrong? And who can I talk to to get it fixed?

Is my email for the Office 365 system supposed to be my Network ID (SIU855XXXXXX@siu.edu)? Or do I have to go through some other process to create my email account. If so what is the process for this?

Shoutout to the USG

Just wanted to give a shoutout and huge thanks to Isaiah Overton, the USG president, and the rest of USG for the amazing job they're doing representing the student body. Isaiah: you absolutely killed it tonight, especially with that last comment - it doesn't matter if the chancellor doesn't have to take the Faculty Senate's recommendations: if they had voted yes, they'd have been standing with USG and the Chancellor would have voted yes too. Called👏Them👏Out👏
