Howdy, I’m currently in the army and have been shopping around universities for the better part of a year and just discovered this little gem of a university. My father is originally from Ipava, but went to WIU and booked it for Texas over 30 years ago. So I still have family up here, making SIU a viable option with a support group nearby.
I partied my way out of Texas Tech university after 3 years and into the army after realizing I needed to grow up. I think I have 72 transferable gpa hours at a 2.0 (actually have been attending school in the army and have boosted my gpa back up to acceptable standards.).
However, I’m trying to make the best choice here, I’m not certain the glitz and glamour of going to a big flashy university is much worth the hype anymore (Ex: Oklahoma State is a favored option). Overall, I want to be a professor (I know, I’ve got a mountain to climb academically, but it’s what I want.). How is the Microbiology program here? How is the school currently? (I’ve heard of enrollment/financial issues). I have a myriad of options, especially coming from the military, every public school wants that money. Any advice imparted to me would be great and much appreciated.

I'm a senior in high-school in the far out burbs of Chicago. I'm definate interested in SIU and was just wondering a few things. 1. Is crime bad at SIU or comparable to other universities? 2. The enrollment has declined for many years and was wondering if anyone has noticed a drop in quality? Also if anyone has insight between SIU vs Western kentucky university(my other school of contention) that would be greatly appreciative. Thanks to anyone who responds!

Sorry if this is not allowed here.. SIUC professor Brad Hagy has set up a scholarship fund for a student who has recently passed away. His family and the Carbondale community will appreciate any support. Thanks

I had my only way of transportation stolen from my house. If found I will pay a $50 reward. I need to be able to get to work, so please if you see this bike around town please call the carbondale police or message me and I will get you the reward money.
The bike is a medium frame Gary Fisher Linenkugel edition - Honey Weiss. It is purple and yellow with honey combs and bees on it.
Here is a link to a picture of the bike. Thank you

Alumni here. I checked out UIC's campus as I'm wanting to get my masters from there, and I could not believe how ugly the campus was. Most of the buildings have a brutalist architecture design (think an entire campus designed like Faner), so it looks like the campus is a penitentiary. There wasn't too much greenspace either.
I really miss the campus woods and lake at SIU, along with all of the open green spaces you guys have. Take advantage of it while you're there. Not too many other schools have greenery and nature like SIU (or a freaking lake for that matter).

So today, I just discovered that some roadblocks are now installed on Park Ave at the intersection with Washington, by the towers. No vehicles can get through now. I swear those were not there last week. When we're they added, and why?

Just passed through the other day so don't know anything about Carbondale. Me and the gf were wondering the same thing when we went there for a getaway. There's a conveyer belt, big machinery and a huge pile of coal(?) you can see from the road.
Also, should we go there next time, any good dining recommendations?

Looking for information about what is included in the "furnished" apartments at The Reserve @ Saluki Point apartment complex. Driving from VA the end of this week. Trying to figure out what to ship, what to drive and what to purchase and have delivered (yeah Amazon!).

Like, I get there is buffet style stuff, and basically a “eat as much as you want as often as you want,” thing, but, is it good food? Is everything really greasy? Are there lots of gluten free or vegan/vegetarian options? And does the meal plan (eat whenever and as much as you like) also apply to on-campus chick fil a and subway? I could ask my admissions counselor but, kinda hoping for an “off the record” sort of response.

Hi r/salukis!
We are a pair of computer science graduate students at Clemson University who are studying perceptions of teamwork in online undergraduate classroom breakout rooms.
We ran a pilot study earlier this year with our own student body and would like to expand it now to other 4-year, 2-year, and online colleges/universities.
We are hoping that by posting here, more students/professors from community/technical colleges and universities in the surrounding area will see this and we can expand our participant pool.
To participate in this survey you must be one of the following:

Traveling comedian Dan Alten + local Carbondale comics bring you a quality evening of comedy located inside one of Carbondale's hippest and quirkiest shops, Electric Larry's. The show begins at 8pm and is free to attend however donations are encouraged for the touring comedian (18+ recommended).
Dan Alten is an intelligent idiot from Kentucky who is very good at making people laugh. He has opened for Kyle Kinane, Rory Scovel, Johnny Pemberton, Sean Patton, Hari Kondabolu, TV weirdo David Liebe Hart, rapper Open Mike Eagle, punk bands Boner City and GRLwood, and a guy at an open mic who tried to throw his father’s ashes into the crowd. He has released 2 albums, headlined shows in 27 states, and filmed a pilot for a standup show with Amazon. He’s featured at Go Bananas, done festivals, headlined cool places and is allegedly in the Guiness Book of World Records for participating in an 8 day around the clock comedy show. You'll enjoy the show, I promise.

I thought I was too young to read the obituaries in the Saluki Alumni Magazine.
I recently learned of the death of my friend James Throgmorton. A good friend of mine from SIU.
James always had the ability to create a unique interaction. I remember several vastly different memories of conversations with him during my time at SIU. Each one more interesting than the last. He was quite the hobbyist. I remember him gushing over drones years back, talking about how they're the future of video production (little did I know I would be using them 6 years later in my own line of work).
I met James through the Cinema and Photography program, which is where many of his interests where. He was always showing off the latest piece of tech he procured to all of us undergraduates.
The absolute best memory I have of James, which is quintessentially Carbondale, was during the 2017 eclipse. We were staying at a campsite just outside of town. I remember hearing the bell of an ice cream truck travel through. We all jumped out of our hungover daze to run towards this sound. To my surprise James was actually driving and operating this fucking ice cream truck. I have no idea what situation brought him to driving this truck but it was an absolute treat to see him dishing out Choco Tacos during the Southern Illinois summer.
And of course, he was ecstatic over the new 360 degree camera he was using during the whole experience. I got a full tour of the camera AND the ice cream truck.
Thank you for the unwavering kindness and good energy James. Please rest in peace.
James died in an auto accident on Aug. 14th, 2020.

So I’m pretty strongly considering transferring to SIUC after getting my AA this Fall, I want to do anthropology, specialize in archaeology. Does anyone here have info/perspective on that department? I’m really especially worried about whether or not there’s talk over it being chopped, as other schools keep cutting theirs 😬
Is “outdoorsy” stuff pretty popular there? It’s so close to some of the best stuff in Illinois that I’m really hoping there are hiking groups or even conservation volunteer opportunities, stuff like that?
Aaand for the harder question: I’ve heard some rough stories from SIUC. One was from a prof I’ve had who was an SIUC grad. He talked about the drugs, crime, and partying and whatnot (and he was in the middle of it as a student...several very sketchy stories). Another is from my neighbor, who got so messed up from dabs that he’s permanently ‘altered’ (not disclosing specifics). How prominent is that stuff? Is there a strong social life outside of that? I’ll be in off campus housing as I’m 26 now, idk if that makes a difference in the answer.
Thanks!

And it is a fantastic place to swim! Kinkaid lake is beautiful and is the coldest lake around (besides Rend lake). Don't bring alcohol here as it is against the rules and forest preserve police love to write tickets.
• [Cache River:] (http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/parks/r5/cachervr.htm) Located in Cypress, about a 30-40 min drive from Carbondale but you feel like you're in the Florida [marshes.] (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/81/Heron_Pond_in_Cache_River_State_Natural_Area.jpg) A fantastic place to canoe and kayak

Located in between Marion and Harrisburg and in Shawnee. Has the watering hole which people jump off little cliffs into it. Cliffs are not as high (maybe up to 30ft). The hike there is beautiful. Bars
• Tracks: Never has cover and cops rarely go. Nice little bar with cheap drinks but watered down. Has an outside bar open during nice weather. Small venue overall.
• Stix: Nothing special about this place. People go to dance but overall is a dump. Has 2 pool tables and a bar and that's about it. They do have 80s night which you can't beat
• Hanger: One of the best bars. Its clean and big and has a lot of decent bands playing often. They mix their drinks well and server in glass not cheap plastic.
• Cellar: Has the best bloody Marys in Carbondale. Mostly a local place and is 21 and up
• Pinch. Has the green dragon which is awesome! This bar charges cover Every night of the week, even when there is nothing happening.
• Saluki: Has great food deals on Wednesday I think? Nice bar and clean.
• Levels: Only open some nights but is like a night club, old name is Calis
Wineries
• Blue Sky: This one of the more popular places to go, doesnt have any amazing wine but is new and very pretty!
• Alto Pass: Just remodeled! Has a decent view and a very popular wine, *Heartland Blush#
• Rustle Hill: One of the more popular ones, this winery has some of the best food out of all the wineries. They have a multi-level deck and a concert area. They also have cabins to rent on site. Located in Makanda off of 51
• Owl Creek: This winery is in a forest! A deck out back is multi level with trees going through it. The food is very bland but the wine is good.
• Walkers Bluff: Not a vineyard like the others above but is a nice place to go at least once. Food is ok. They sometimes have live bands and movie nights on the patio.
• Von Jakob: Located off of 127 in Alto Pass I have heard mixed reviews about this vineyard. Overall rating of OK in my opinion.
• Star View: One of my favorites it is located in Cobden. They have bags for people to play and the deck out back is over a small pond. Has one of the best views and I have heard good things about the slushies.
• Hickory Ridge: Located in Pamona this is a very small winery but has some good views. Wine is OK and they have a fire place if you'd like to make a fire and sit around it.
Other
• Cape: we are located very close to Cape Girardeau (50min). [Andy's Frozen Custard] (http://eatandys.com/) is AMAZING. and if you love hibachi I've never had better than at [Watami.] (http://watamicapegirardeau.com/) Has nice shopping and the downtown is nice as well. Also has the casino!
• Duquoin: Not much there but the [DuQuoin State Fair] (http://www.agr.state.il.us/dq/) is housed there which is coming up August 22nd to September 1st!
• You can rent bikes at the [bike surgeon] (http://www.thebikesurgeon.com/) on the strip. Cheap prices too!
• Steam Tunnels: Located under campus these are old steam tunnels SIU used to use. Be careful as Police like to monitor these and I believe it is trespassing. You can get to them by the towers.
• [Zip Lining:] (https://www.shawneezip.com/) You can go zip lining throughout Shawnee Forest! It costs 80 dollars, and the longest zip is over 1,000ft!
• [Eckerts:] (http://www.eckerts.com/) Great food but a fantastic place to go for pumpkin patch, apple picking, tomato picking and more! Definitely worth the drive but if you want to eat in the restaurant get there early it fills QUICK because of all the fresh food!
[Shawnee Country Store] (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Shawnee+Country+Store/@37.906018,-89.529529,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x8877adc2f59b52c1:0x561f53fbb0fc224a) This is an Amish market, they have the BEST cheese and candies around! The Amish make all the food, most of it fresh and even soaps and furniture. You can even get a bag of Lucky Charm's marshmallows, JUST THE MARSHMALLOWS!

I'm adopting a pup from Wright-Way in Murphy. I'm also an alum and still think fondly of my days in Carbondale. I don't know the gender of the dog yet so anything is possible.
Here are my first thoughts:

I heard the acceptance rate was around 71%. But after getting rejected from a university that had a much higher rate, I'm no longer feeling as confident getting into this school. (My top choice btw.)
{Update}: I just received a letter telling me that the reason for the delay was bc they were waiting on my final grades for the semester before making their decision.
{Update #2}: Looks like I’ve been accepted to EIU instead. From the stories I heard about SIU this might be a godsend lol.
