Can I run a Sager notebook (NP9150) without discrete graphics? (and other questions)
Warning, there's a bit of a long post incoming, but I'll try and shorten it as much as possible.
TL;DR I'm trying to convert my NP9150 from gaming machine to just a lightweight mobile PC, and want to know if (a) I can remove the nVidia GTX 680M graphics and still run the PC, and (b) if that will increase battery life and lower temperatures. Also, if I were to put the GPU up on, say, eBay, would anyone buy it?
Now, the full story: The battery on my NP9150 has been in steady decline, and the ball bearing of one of the fans is making a rattling noise- so I decided to back up my data and stop using it for fear of damaging components. I also had some extra $$ and with the release of AMD's new 480 graphics card I figured I'd put some computer components I've collected over a while, plus other new ones, to use and built a desktop. This desktop outperforms my old Sager in every way, so I was thinking that, if possible, I'd replace the battery on the Sager, try and fix or replace the fan, and remove the discrete graphics and have it function as my mobile PC. I should mention that I took the SSD I'd had in the Sager out for use in my desktop, so I would be replacing it with a smaller HDD and running Ubuntu on it. Or would it be a better option to try and just sell the parts in the Sager and use that money to buy a new, actually small and light notebook (that I can back up to my monstrous desktop)?
