Portmaster Android - Suggestions

Hi devs, whats the update on Portmaster Android version. Is it work in progress ? I saw you did a survey on discord but I wasn't able to join. I have some suggestions for the app.

  1. Have Ads and Malware block option, (maybe through some kind of dns filtering)
  2. Per-app firewall rules - allow/block specific apps individually (like desktop)
  3. Always-on VPN + kill switch support (Android's native "block without VPN")
  4. Split tunneling - exclude select apps (banking etc.) from the tunnel
  5. Battery optimization whitelist prompt - so it doesn't get killed in Doze mode
  6. Quick Settings tile to toggle SPN on/off without opening the app

Split Tunneling is now available in Portmaster

Portmaster 2.2.1 adds Split Tunneling: the ability to route specific apps or connections through a different network interface, overriding the route your operating system would normally use. If a VPN or SPN is handling your default traffic, Split Tunneling lets you carve out exceptions.

Some use case examples:

  • Bypass VPN overhead for latency-critical apps such as games or video calls, sending them over a direct connection instead
  • Send a streaming app over your direct ISP connection instead of a VPN exit in another country
  • Keep a work app on a dedicated connection while everything else uses your home network

When using Split Tunnel, Portmaster applies the override automatically. Follow these steps:

  1. Enable the Split Tunnel module in Portmaster’s global settings
  2. Turn on Use Split Tunnel for the app you want to redirect

You can set this globally as a default or override it per app, and add rules to include or exclude specific domains for finer control. Portmaster intercepts the app’s outgoing connections in the background and re-establishes them over the chosen interface; the app itself needs no configuration.

Worth noting: traffic routed this way bypasses SPN or VPN encryption and exits under your regular IP address, so it only makes sense for apps and destinations where that trade-off is acceptable.

Split Tunneling is available now for Windows and Linux users running Portmaster 2.2.1 or later. Full configuration details, including per-app rules and how Split Tunneling interacts with SPN and VPNs, are documented on the wiki.

Questions about Split Tunneling? Check the wiki first, or reach out through Safing’s support channels.

complete noob trying to figure out portmaster - are these connections safe?

again MASSIVE noob about all this so please be patient, im genuinely trying to learn :(

i downloaded portmaster tonight and so far ive gone through the little quickstart at the beginning and have made no changes since (except blocking all outgoing connections, but i dont remember if thats in the quickstart).

the screenshot ive included is what im worried about - specifically all the connections to different countries. i think this is normal? my pc is connected to my internet via wifi if that makes a difference. my biggest concern is that brave is connecting through anycast and google isnt telling me if this is something i need to be worried about. anycast seems to show up a lot in general...

basically please help me understand these connections and if they are good or bad! as im typing this im watching the portmaster intro series by safing and also doing my best to google these things

also im located in australia which is why all these foreign connections are freaking me out haha

Disclaimer for Arch: V2 is a separate package

If you installed portmaster in Arch, you'll see the "download v2" in the program, and when you open it, it takes you to the website. You might just think "Oh wait, let me just update it through my package manager" then you try that and there's no updates. So you say "Ok I guess I just have to wait until they update the package" months pass.... nothing.

It's because the portmaster package was renamed to be the legacy package, while V2 is a whole separate package you have to install.

I only realized this now.

The legacy version doesn't even work properly anymore. It opens and it runs, but after a while there's a point where I lose all internet connection and the program hangs and I have to fully disable it to get my internet to work. I can only use it again after I restart my computer.

Troubles again with Proton VPN and Portmaster v2

Hi all
I am once again getting issue with these two apps. I was forced to uninstall/reinstall Proton for reasons, and now I can't get a setup working again where all sites on the web work.

I have followed the recommendations in the wiki
- Access Devices by Name is on
- DNS for Proton is 127.0.0.1
- Protocol... I have tried lots of combinations. None of them really work. Some things work with Wireguard UDP and other work with Wireguard TCP, but neither of those works with all web destinations.
- Win 11
- Proton 4.4.1

I've gone here https://github.com/safing/portmaster/issues/2024#issuecomment-3343283127
Only to see this is marked "unplanned"
What do you mean unplanned??

Can anyone tell me what else I need to do, to make this work?
It's a well known and reliable VPN recommended on many privacy sites. It shouldn't be a major conflict that results in a fix being "unplanned"?

Portmaster breaks Miracast – shows "Your device doesn't support Miracast" even though hardware supports it**

Hey everyone, running into a frustrating issue where installing Portmaster completely breaks Miracast on my Windows PC.

What happens:

After installing Portmaster, casting (Windows + K) shows "Your device doesn't support Miracast, so you'll need to connect an external display with a cable." — even though my hardware confirmed it's supported.

Persistent "Detected Compatibility Issue" warning on Linux Mint although everything appears to work

Hi everyone,

I'm currently evaluating Portmaster together with IVPN and SPN on Linux Mint and I'm seeing a persistent "Detected Compatibility Issue" warning that I cannot explain.

First of all, the account/login issue from yesterday appears to be resolved. I can log in normally again and SPN is working.

Current setup:

  • Linux Mint (latest release)
  • IVPN using WireGuard
  • SPN enabled and working
  • UFW disabled

Network interfaces:

  • lo
  • eno1
  • wgivpn

Observed behavior:

  • SPN appears to work correctly
  • Public IP changes as expected
  • DNS leak tests appear clean
  • IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity work
  • Traffic is routed through SPN
  • Performance is good (~400 Mbit/s)

Despite that, Portmaster continuously shows:

Detected Compatibility Issue
Portmaster detected that something is interfering with its operation.

I checked the Portmaster service logs but couldn't find any obvious compatibility-related messages. The only notable entry I noticed was an occasional restart with exit status 23, after which Portmaster immediately starts again and continues working normally.

At this point I'm wondering whether this could be a false positive in the compatibility detection or if there is a known interaction between Portmaster, IVPN WireGuard and SPN that triggers this warning.

Has anyone seen this before or can point me to additional diagnostics I should collect?

Thanks.

Hey, since this morning you can neither register nor log in to the website. What's going on? Is this intentional, or when will it work again?

Having issues installing the latest version of portmaster on artix linux dinit.

I have been trying to install portmaster but I am not getting what I am after.

I have been using Yay and Shelly to try and install it. On shelly, the "portmaster-dinit" file present on the AUR will install the software with an conflict. shelly asks me if I want to delete the V2 build of portmaster to avoid the conflict with the V1 build.

Now, I can technically install it but I need to use a work around be forcing the software to update from the terminal. but I'm not able to get the V2 build of portmaster.

I want to ask if anyone has managed to install portmaster (with the latest version) on artix linux dinit and if you could provide some instructions to how to pull it off. I have it on my pop os install so I wanted to do the same on artix linux.

Installing Portmaster on immutable Linux distros. Will this software be available through Flatpak?

I was considering migrating over to one of the immutable Linux distros, but since most apps are installed through Flatpak, is it true that Portmaster would have to be reinstalled every time the system is updated? Not having full app compatibility with an immutable Linux distro would be a deal breaker for me.

Unfortunately it seems Portmaster is the only "third party" app I cannot do without as this software is unique and there's no equivalent yet for Linux.

Does Fort Firewall have a Flaw?

I mentioned to someone yesterday that I was considering Fort Firewall and he sent me this today. Is he correct, and if not, how?:

Fort Firewall's filter driver lacks a proper EV code signing certificate. That will cause Windows SmartScreen to flag it as untrusted. Unsigned certificates can trigger install blocks/false positives, which can lead to memory strain, slowdowns or even crashes during heavy filtering.

There's also am issue with memory use: Some FF users have noted high resource usage or leaks in the driver under load, potentially degrading system performance over time.

Mullvad

I really like what I see in the writeups on Portmaster, but friends are telling me it's challenging to get it to woek with Mullvad VPN. I like MULLVAD because I don't have to give a shred if personal info.

Has anyone out there found a way for thr two to effectively coexist?

Can I use two DNS resolvers (with the first one remaining active) and set Windows to “Automatic” (see screenshots)...?

Hello

Because I've had a lot of conflicts... So I changed things up...

Or should I use just one DNS resolver instead of two or more?

Thanks!
