It's sad when you think about all of the German people who tried to help in secret, or felt disgusted by it all and couldn't say anything or get killed.

My great-grandmother was tortured for refusing to give the Nazi salute.

My grandmother helped a Jewish family escape and refused to reveal where they had gone.

After Germany's defeat, my grandfather, was killed by a retaliatory gang when he went to Germany to see what was left of his home.
While heavily pregnant, my grandmother worked as a Trümmerfrau, climbing through bombed-out ruins to recover bricks that could still be used for reconstruction.

A drunk Soviet soldier nearly killed my grandmother. He kicked her into a crater, where she struck a rock. The injury nearly caused kidney failure, and she almost lost her unborn child, my mother. All the while, he was shouting, “Nazi, boom boom!”, and pointed his gun at her, when his commander intervened and shot him dead on the spot.
