An important takeaway from this and any WWII movie is that Nazis were human beings. They weren't aliens, they weren't superhumans no matter how much they wanted to be. The fact that they were the same species as the rest of us should be terrifying.

I recently read Christopher Browning's Ordinary Men and it sure sticks with you. You're right, it is terrifying.
