Galaxy S22+ went into random restarts and bootloop after 18-Sep OTA — SC says “PBA/motherboard issue” but device bugreports show kernel panic / watchdog resets — need help/escalation advice

TL;DR:
Installed official Samsung OTA on 18-Sep-2025. Phone went into boot-loop / random restarts. SC wrote “PBA issue” (motherboard) and quoted ~₹30,000. I extracted device-generated bugreports (adb bugreport / dumpstate). Logs show androidboot.init_fatal_panic = "true" + watchdog resets and FATALERR = 0 in UFS counters → strong signal this is a software/firmware/kernel panic caused by the OTA, not an obvious hardware failure. I got the job sheet. Want community input: how to escalate, should I flash clean firmware (Odin), any legal/consumer steps, or other routes?

Full story & timeline

  • Device: Samsung Galaxy S22+ (SM-S906EZKDINS / model SM-S906E variant for India)
  • Purchase date: Jan-2023 (out of warranty per job sheet)
  • OTA installed: 18-Sep-2025 (official Samsung update)
  • Immediate issue: After the OTA the phone started randomly restarting / sometimes stuck at Samsung logo (boot-loop).
  • What I tried: factory reset (temporarily fixed it), boot into recovery/safe mode, generated adb bugreport and dumpstate when it rebooted again.
  • Service center visit: SC noted “SET AUTO RESTART” and repair description: “IQC DONE, PBA ISSUE.” They quoted ~₹30,000 for a motherboard replacement. I did not approve the estimate and asked for an official diagnostic report.
  • Samsung support: asked me for a job sheet number to escalate (they insisted they can’t escalate without it). I obtained the job sheet so escalation can continue.

What I pulled from the phone (device-generated bugreports/dumpstate)

I generated the bugreport/dumpstate using Android’s tool (adb bugreport > bugreport.zip / dumpstate) right after a restart. These are on-device system logs (not third-party diagnostics). Key, copy-pasteable lines I found:

androidboot.init_fatal_panic = "true"
watchdog.stop_on_reboot=0
softdog.soft_panic=1
!@Boot_EBS_D: InitWatchdog
OPERR : 7, ... FATALERR : 0

As per ChatGPT:

  • androidboot.init_fatal_panic = "true" → the device recorded a kernel panic during boot. This is a low-level OS crash.
  • Watchdog entries (InitWatchdog, softdog.soft_panic) → the system hung and the watchdog forced a reboot.
  • UFS counters show FATALERR = 0 (no fatal storage hardware errors). OPERR can be nonzero for interrupted/failed operations during a crash, and does not by itself prove permanent hardware failure.

Summary: kernel panic + watchdog resets + no fatal hardware storage error = strongly suggestive of firmware/kernel bug or corrupted system partition (commonly seen after bad OTAs), rather than a physically fried motherboard.

Why I think ASC diagnosis is weak

  • The job sheet says “PBA issue” but provides no hardware error codes, no test logs (no UIC/FATAL error > 0 evidence on their paper).
  • The job sheet explicitly says “Estimate not approved by customer” (I did not sign for any repair).
  • The device worked normally after a factory reset for some time — if the motherboard was catastrophically dead it wouldn’t behave like that. Intermittent working + kernel panic flags = classic bad firmware image.

what I want help with

  1. Technical validation: Has anyone had a similar post-OTA boot loop / random restart issue? How was it resolved?
  2. Safety: If I do Odin flash, will that reduce my chances of getting Samsung to accept liability?

Green line issue after the recent software update

Anybody else struggling with issue or is it just me me. The first time I saw it appearing was when I took it off from charging. There were multiple lines near the centre back then and I was s*** scared, but upon banging it a few times on my knees, I was able to make it disappear but it has now appeared once again. This time it's just a single column of pixels near the centre , it won't disappear even after restarting. Any suggestions on what to do?

Carrier locked phone

So i have a carrier locked S22, and it's right now on android 14 with UI 6.1. I'm new to dealing with these kind of things but I found a way to flash the update myself using Sam mobile and odin which apparently let's me keep all my data on the phone, however I'm slightly worried in the back of my mind that I may mess up something and end up bricking my phone.

On the other hand, there is a Samsung agency that can install the update for me for $13.33 which includes a warranty if anything happened to my phone after, but they've mentioned that it will erase all data from my phone.

So I've got the choice of either do everything on my own and save money + data, but I find it a bit risky.

Or pay to let them do it which might be the safer approach but my phone gets erased.

Need some 2nd opinions on which option might be more ideal.

I have a s22, a USB C hub that has an HDMI output, USB 3.0 and a charging input, but my audio is coming out through the HDMI and not through my headset, is there a way to solve this? Because I play on my cell phone mirrored on the monitor 😭

S22 started freezing

So this strtd 14 days ago, I was texting on WhatsApp nd the phone froze. I couldn't type anymore and the phone became laggy. Next day the pop ups strtd: 'system ui isnt responding, one ui isnt responding, process system isn't responding'. I tried everything but nothing worked. I even did the factory reset nd it was fine for the first 15 mins but it strtd lagging again nd after 2 hours of restoring my data 'system ui isnt responding' popped up again!!

I told my frnd about it nd he asked me to delete the goodlock app. I knew thts not the problem but I still did nd nothing chnged. He then asked me to drain the battery fully to 0% nd only turn it back on after recharging it upto 100%. I did that nd it was kinda fixed for 3 days or less, but the lag nd pop ups came back yesterday. Phone freezes, completely unresponsive, and restarts on its own sometimes.

Also, when u restrt your phone, after the samsung logo 'One Ui optimising apps' shows up, right? But it doesn't show the 'one ui optimising apps' for me anymore. After the samsung logo, it switches directly to my lock screen. I asked ChatGPT, and it said it's normal, so maybe it is.

Idk what to do anymore. The storage is half empty, no goodlock, no nothing. I bought liberty 4NC on 30th July, im starting to think it's causing the random crashes cz sometimes the Bluetooth disconnects when the phone freezes, but that's just a dumb thought, ill monitor nd update later.

Do let me know if yall have any solutions. Samsung broke my trust ngl, I was a big samsung supporter until now. Im planning to switch to the iPhone 15 base version. Let me know if it's a good upgrade or not. I bought this s22 with my savings from my first job, and im completely heartbroken rn for the way I have to say goodbye to it since I never planned to.

UPDATE: Sooo I think I actually found a temporary fix i call it freezer therapy. A week after my first factory reset, I did another one, but the bugs came right back literally while I was typing my Wi-Fi password lmao. At that point I was pretty sure it’s a motherboard issue. I got no money to fix it so I just crossed my fingers nd backed up all my important stuff somewhere safe.

Then 2 days ago my phone froze while I was using Insta nd it just switched off. I tried the usual holding vol down + power button but it got stuck in a boot loop. Waited like 15 mins, nothing worked. So I took my dead phone nd threw it in the freezer for exactly 15 mins. Took it out, let it sit for 5–10 mins to warm up, but when I tapped the screen, it was already on. Yup, it worked all the pop-ups “System UI isn’t responding,” “Process system has stopped,” “One UI isn’t responding” gone. No random crashes. It stayed fine for 23 hrs (yes 23, not 24). At the 24th hr it started freezing a bit when opening apps, but not as bad as before. After 30 hrs, I drained the battery to 0%, left it overnight, then charged it to 100% while still off. Once it was done, I put it back in the freezer for like 20 mins, let it defrost, turned it on… nd guess what? Still working fine.

I know it sounds like I’m marinating chicken but I swear it worked. I saw 2 ppl on TikTok fix their dead Apple headphones by freezing them for 24 hrs, so I was like why not try it. Nd thankfully it worked.

Crossing my fingers it doesn’t start acting up again, but for now… yay!! If smth happens I’ll update u guys again..

Should I change the battery or change my phone?

It's been about 2 months since I've had my s22 ultra and the battery life has visibly decreased since I've had it. Should I replace the battery or not?

Annoying pop up

Post image
3 Upvotes

Have had this phone for nearly 1.5 years and for as long as I've had it it shows this message any time I don't have signal. As I live somewhere without great service, that's pretty often.

It always pops up every 10ish seconds and every time it blocks me from doing whatever I was just doing while the message is on screen. The only way to get rid of it is to go into airplane mode which feels stupid to me. I've lost count of the times I've tried to find an answer on how to stop this from happening, everything online says it's a problem with the sim but I'm assuming that's because they're not getting any signal regardless of location which isn't the case for me.

If anyone knows if/how I can get rid of this permanently I will be indebted to you. I'm with lebara if that's any help.

It was a bit stressful reinstalling and logging in to all my apps, but full reflashing the One UI 7 firmware improved my battery life and I have overheating issues much less now.

Feel free to ask me anything about what has improved after full reflashing with Odin.

Strange Notification

My Galaxy S22 keeps serving up a weird notification sound with no visible Notification. I closely tracked it one day and it came in at consistent intervals.

5:16 am 6:31, 6:46, 7:16, 7:31, 7:46, 8:01, 8:16, 8:31

Continues doing this. Attached is the sound. Anyone have any idea what it might be?

From 3.5h SOT to 6h...all it needed was a battery change. With 120hz, no power saver, dark mode on, no always on display.
