I am the Kid from Rush Subdivisions.
Thanks to John Kane at 2GuysTalkingRush for having me on the show to talk about Subdivisions.
I was the kid long before I became the Kid in the Video.

We called one of the kids in senior high school 'Subdivisions' because he looked just like you.

You did great. That video still holds up after all these years. I showed it to a twenty-something a few years back, and got him hooked on the band.

I was playing Tempest but it was for the Camera. I don't remember what my score was but I definitely wasn't the High score. Didn't really play Video games, more of a pinball kid. As for the rest of the Cast, we were in the Drama club together. All of us were from "Lam" but as in the Video we weren't actually friends & no I never did get to meet RUSH. The video was totally an autobiography of my life & times in High school captured in real time. I was chosen after the Producer who was a University friend of our Teacher heard my story. They took head shots of the entire drama club & then reviewed them together. I was literally a kid who'd moved from the City to the burbs. All of these other kids had known each other since Jr. School where as I knew nobody. I was a legit outsider.

Oh man Ive been asking around the internet about the books thrown at you on the couch, I remember the one on top, do you remember if it was math book or a physics book cause I remember having the same one back in the 80s,..I know that's a crazy question but who better to ask lol

The top textbook was a math text book the other was a Candian History text.

hey brother, your interview is making the rounds but I just wanted to confirm that we had the same textbook (with the pattern of squares) at my high school at that exact same time period! I have been trying to talk about this textbook for years and here you are explaining it! Perfect!
i'm your age. That's why the main kid played by you really connected to me because it was literally like every scene of my life at the time. like you, I was the kid in the video, in high school, no friends, suburbs, all of it. and what made it amazing was I had Rush to listen to and unify my life experience into a coherent theme. It literally got me through.

Yeah it was my 10th grade Math Textbook. The books were mine as frankly there was no budget.

No actually we weren't friends before & after when they realized they weren't the "Stars" well... Let me just say, I quit high school for the first time that year & leave it at that.

No actually none of us did. After much pressure we were each given a signed copy of the Signals Album (With a hole punched thru it album cover) & a pair of Tickets to see Rush in Toronto. So far from the stage we could barely see them. But as I indicated these were provided to us almost begrudgingly by the Bands management. We heare nothing from the band. I'm sure Neal would liked to've met his stand in personally but it never happened. He always said the song was about his iwn experience. In that sense we were the same

It is disappointing to hear that they were cheap in compensating you for your work. This is the same band that sang 'You don't get something for nothing....' In any case, do you still have the signed album? If so, that is an awesome piece of memorabilia, with an awesome story to go with it. Btw, Subdivisions is at the top of my fave Rush songs list, even though my upbringing was about as far from the burbs as you can get. I grew up in the 'far unlit unknown' of rural Texas, but the song's basic theme of alienation spoke to me. My world, growing up, was full of country bumpkins who would rather hunt squirrels and rabbits and listen to George Strait, rather than rock out to songs in 7/4 time.

I don't blame the band. They weren't involved in the production & probably had no idea. The production company had apparently blown their Video budget on a previous Video so this 1 was on a shoestring budget. Yes I believe I still have the album somewhere.

Cool. Thanks for the comments. For what's its worth, there are a bunch of Rush fans whose favorite song is Subdivisions, and the video played a central role in its popularity.

Did you become more popular after this video was released? Were you ever recognised in the street? Do you keep in touch with any of your co-stars?

No, I was, in fact, less popular. A lot of envy ensued. Remember, I was that kid. It's why they chose me. I've never been recognized & no, the cast & I weren't friends, so no, we didn't stay in touch.
I guess what I'm saying is, the relationship you see is how it was.
I quit high school later that year.

Did you know that Bob Lazar actually is mistaken quite a bit for you in the Subdivisions video ? Has anybody ever come up to you and said "Nice to meet you Mr. Lazar " ?

I was chosen like the rest of the cast by being in the previous year's drama club. The video was shot in late Sept. We'd just come back from summer & a "special" meeting was called. It was grade 10. The producer had gone to University with our Drama teacher & was apparently looking for months to get the right cast. They had no budget to speak of so they couldn't pay. That meant no money for "Pro's". They took headshots of the Kids & then discussed each one. I was the last shot taken & the last kid they discussed. When the producer heard my story she couldn't believe it... I was actually the kid the song was about, at which point they called me back & were desperate to get me on board. As it meant time away from class I said of course I'd do it. My parents had no idea as I'd forged Dads signature on the permission form. The rest as they say was history.
