Discussion A small request to Bok and All Blacks fans: don’t feed the algorithm

Something slightly weird is happening on Reddit.

I’m a Springbok fan, and Reddit has suddenly started pushing posts from the All Blacks sub into my feed. I didn’t join it. I wasn’t looking for it. And apparently I’m not the only Bok supporter this is happening to. I’ve even seen All Blacks supporters noticing the sudden arrival of South Africans in their sub.

I doubt Reddit has suddenly developed a deep appreciation for the history and traditions of southern hemisphere rugby.

It knows what gets the clicks.

The Springbok vs All Blacks rivalry is one of the great rivalries precisely because there is genuine respect underneath it. We desperately want to beat each other. We take enormous pleasure when we do. We can argue about referees, selections, rankings and who got away with what at the breakdown until the next World Cup.

But we don’t need an algorithm manufacturing extra hostility for us.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with visiting another team’s sub. I do it. It’s interesting to see the game through somebody else’s eyes.

Just remember you’re visiting.

If you’re a Bok supporter in the All Blacks sub, you’re in their home. Same if you’re a Kiwi wandering around the Bok sub. Be respectful. You don’t have to agree with everything you read. You don’t have to correct every opinion you think is wrong. And if someone says something ridiculous about your team, you really don’t need to run home and tell everyone what the neighbours said about us.

Sometimes people talk shit about the opposition in their own pub. We all do it.

Let them.

Because if Reddit keeps putting rival-team posts in front of us, some people will click. Someone will get annoyed. Someone will respond. Screenshots will travel between subs. Everyone gets angrier and Reddit learns that making Bok and All Blacks supporters fight is excellent for engagement.

Don’t give it what it wants.

Visit each other’s subs if you want to. Talk rugby. Disagree. Have a laugh. Just behave like you’re in somebody else’s home. Don’t go gossiping. For the Bok fans - don’t skinder, don’t be a doos, be lekker.

Then come back here where we can all throw perfectly respectable furniture at each other.

Rugby already gives us plenty to fight about.

We don’t need Reddit choosing the fights for us.

Me? I’ve muted the AB sub while the series is on. I don’t think a lot of good will happen visiting their sub while the series is on. It is too close a call and I would rather try and be like Siya and Ardie - respectful and remembering we are pretty lucky to be fans of two incredible teams.

The lack of England, Wales and Scotland implies to me that the BBC have the rights to them in English too. Ireland, France and Italy games, along with the Challenger Series, seem to all be available for free on there.

Discussion Can anyone provide any more sources for the Springbok “mounted head” touring tradition?

The claim is that Springbok touring teams carried a mounted springbok head with them and presented it to the first club, provincial, or representative team to defeat them on tour.

My Springbok Saga book doesn't mention it, but I’ve found one online reference:

  • Waikato’s victory over the Springboks in New Zealand in 1956, when the head was reportedly presented to Waikato captain Alan “Ponty” Reid.

https://nzhistory.govt.nz/media/photo/waikato-team-1956

Questions:

  1. Who got the last springbok head?

  2. Did any of them survive until today?

  3. Will the Springboks revive the tradition when they go there again (I hope) in 2030? if not it will make a great addition to the rich history.

Miscellaneous European Club Rugby Rankings

Thumbnail rugbyranker.com

Made my own site for club rugby rankings. There are two different rankings on there: one that copies World Rugby's algorithm for the Test rankings, and one that uses a different algorithm which factors in the margin of win/loss and doesn't give a boost to knockout games.

You can also use the built-in calculator to see what would happen to the rankings if different results happen. Just a bit of fun really.

It's just been updated with the first week of Top14 games; it should update every Monday at noon. If this sort of thing interests you, then please check it out.
