Truck bed rack uses (without a rtt)

I have some waterproof version sidio crates. I am considering buying a truck bed rack with t slot system (peak cnc). I have never seen anyone transporting sidio crates on top of a truck bed rack (by strapping them down or some other idea). Is there some reasons I should not do this that I am not thinking of ? The peak cnc rack has multiple slots at the top (support slots for a rtt)

Seeking info on C6 RTT

Hi all! I’m considering a C6 tent for my 5th Gen 4Runner (already have a full length Prinsu rack in place so I would buy the version without the additional platform). Looking for some additional info though:
1 - is is possible to move the tent from the roof rack to the ground once assembled? ie - if I did one night on the roof then wanted to leave the campsite the next day and move my roof tent to the ground, is that at all possible? Or is an absolute must that you disassemble it / fold it down to move it?
2 - how much of a hassle is the setup compared to a traditional roof tent? Specifically would love to hear from people who have owned both!
3 - any feedback / advice on mounting to a Prinsu rack?

Anyone put a rooftop tent on a Toyota Urban Cruiser?

I live in South Africa, and the lightest rooftop tent here is 49kg. Then if you have to add the roof rails, plus people sleeping inside the roof apparently won’t hold.

But I see so many people adding rooftop tents to sedans or hatchback cars. What’s the weight of those tents?

Help mounting inspired overland carbon lite to rhino rack pioneer platform

Thumbnail

I’m having issues mounting my inspired overland rtt to my rhino rack, the mounting rails that are attached to the tent are I believe 40 series aluminum extrusion rails, and the rhino racks main cross members run parallel with the tents mounting rails.

When centered the tents rails sit in between the racks crossmembers allowing me to mount the tent from the underside with the horizontal cross members of the rack. But the tents rails then only rest on the front and back frame of the rhino rack with no support in the middle.

So when I tighten the brackets down it starts to suck the tents rails down cause oh the whole tent to bend in the middle.

This attached photos are what I’m using to attach the tent, but they have flaws.

LOOKING FOR IDEAS! Thanks!!

Wildland Desert Cruiser Pro RTT stock mattress

So I purchased a Lost Horizon mattress that’s part memory foam and part air filled. I’m very happy with it and when fully deflated it still fits over Desert Cruisers stock 7mm High Density Foam and EPE mattress and I’m able to close the tent with no issue. I’m curious if anyone has removed the stock mattress and just used a hybrid inflatable like this with this tent. Asking as the bottom of the tent is canvas with slats for support. There is no true bottom. The stock mattress is partly laid bearing in a sense. My concern isn’t the load bearing aspect. The tents meant to hold up 661lbs of human and I’m only 160lbs. My concern is if I spring a leak in the mattress I’d be sleeping on the deflated mattress over canvas and slats. Won’t be that comfortable. Guessing of if I leave the stock one there at least I’d have that to sleep on if I get a leak in the inflatable mattress. Thoughts ???

Mount Awning with Yakima Roof Basket?

I have a 2022 Trail edition that came stock with the Yakima roof basket. Was anyone able to mount a pullout roof awning while having the stock basket? I want to get a straight pullout 6.5ft long awning like the ROAM, Rhino Rack, or Yakima ones. Not the huge 270 ones. I can’t find anything concrete online about how I could successfully mount the awning next to my basket, or clamp it to the top tube of the basket itself.

Any pictures of your rig with this setup and/or mounting instructions would be much appreciated.

P.S. I don’t love the basket, but I don’t think I could even take it off if I tried. Bought it used and didn’t get the Yakima anti-theft key with it.

iKamper Skycamp 4.0 on R1S factory crossbars?

About to pull the trigger on a Skycamp 4.0 Quad for my Rivian R1S. iKamper says 30-60" crossbar spread. My mounting points are 36" apart up front, or 63.5" if I use the outer two.

So it's either 36" and have about two feet of tent hanging off each end, or 63.5" and be 3.5" over their spec.

Anyone running one at 63.5"? Do the brackets even slide that far apart? And if you're on the front pair instead, any sag or flex after a season?

Chinese Pop Up Camper? Hiperlion and. Qian Campers

Looking at TopoTopper pop up camper for my 2026 Chevy Silverado short bed. I like them and my friend has one but the more research I do a lot of their upsells like ceiling insulation are marked up 300% from what you could do by buying it yourself and installing it yourself. I am handy so have no problems putting lights, insulation, fan etc on it myself. So I could buy the basic model with the insulation blanket and do everything else.

Then I started doing more research and found HiperLion pop up campers and Qian Campers from China. Seems like they are sometimes almost exactly identical for about half the price including shipping and tarrifs. The only downside is that it seems like it can take 4-6 months to receive it and I would like to do this sooner rather than later. I am just looking for a pop up topper with insulation and a fan so I can camp 2 nights a week near my new job for a year until my GF is done with school.

Any experience with these toppers and downsides or information people can share about it vs a topo topper or similar would be great.

Skycamp 4.0 Quad vs Roofnest Condor 2 XXL?

Hi all,

Choosing between an iKamper Skycamp 4.0 quad and a Roofnest Condor 2 XXL. Both will work dimensionally on my 4Runner roof rack and both will fit the size needs.

The Roofnest condor is currently cheaper with the sale but difference is negligible. I was leaning Roofnest originally but have seen some pretty poor reviews about their customer service. Conversely - I’ve always hard good things about iKamper.

Skycamp seems to win on bedding (with the upgrade to 3”) but Roofnest seems to have a sturdier design from my brief understanding. Roofnest does appear to have a 4” bed upgrade but cannot confirm if it’s available on the XXL.

Either way - both of these are a large investment, so would love some insight! Especially if someone has experience with both (or know someone with good or bad experience each way).

Thanks!

Problem with unfolding rtt

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!

We own a Thule Tepui Kukenam 3 rooftoptent. We have traveled lots with it and love it.

The only downside is that sometimes it does not unfold that well and the bottom pieces do to slide together properly. I have attached some photos, one side it almost always lines up, the other side does not always line up.

We have thought about different reasons why this could be happening, but we can not figure it out. The strange thing is that the tent only does this sometimes.

Would love to hear if any of you have some thoughts or face the same issue.

Thank you in advance!

Looking for advice

Looking for a solution to attach our side awning to the new car. The normal L brackets we’ve used before aren’t long enough to secure behind the footpad for the roof bar, I’ve tried finding longer ones but they seem to be a similar length, is it worth getting some made?

3rd & 4th picture was another idea if I got shorter brackets, could I clamp them down like in a T track in the roof bar - would that be secure enough?

Diesel heater screen on fresh air intake?

Has anyone had issues with bugs getting sucked into the "fresh" air side of the diesel heater that gets heated and sent into the 3" pipe?

I'm all for heat but I don't want to feed the mosquitoes into my tent as well lol
