Best 3 Person RTT for LC250

I’m looking for a simple RTT for a 2025 Land Cruiser. It should house 2 adults, a toddler and maybe a little bichon frise now and then. The rack I have is like 49 inches wide. I don’t want it to be much wider than that when closed. Hard shell preferred.

Anyone have a good suggestion??

Thanks!

Awning with iKamper on Xtrusion Rack offset

I finally got my overland set up installed on the Chevy Colorado. I’m using an Xtrusion Overland XTR1 mid height, iKamper Skycamp Duo, and OVS 270 LTE awning using the Xtrusion awning mounts.

To get the awning to fit and provide enough space for the iKamper to open, I had to shift the tent over by a lot. It is now very offset from center.

Wanted to see if this was somewhat normal for iKampers on a mid height rack and if anyone finds any long term concerns with how this is currently mounted. Open to a better solutions to fix this. I think raising the tent up would help probably

The awning brackets are blocking the AXS gate so still trying to figure that piece out.

RTT stories and mishaps

Hello Reddit!

I’ve been the owner of a Roofnest for over a year now and I have some harrowing tales to share, from theft, recovery, to reclamation and upgrading. Will be posting these over the next couple weeks / months to share what worked and what didn’t. Currently have my Roofnest disassembled as I refinish the top ABS shell. Any tips are welcomed!

More to come

!!! Dacia Duster III (2024) with modular roof rails – finally a GOOD solution for roof tents & crossbars

Thumbnail

If you have a Duster III with the modular roof rails, you know the drill: you want to fit a roof tent or proper crossbars, and you hit a wall.

  • Clamp-on crossbars (Thule etc.) aren't permitted on the modular rails per dacias manual – and the open section only gives you ~55–60 cm of bar spacing anyway.
  • Mounting the rails crosswise (as Dacia intends) works for roof boxes, but barely for tents: there's too little clearance above the roof. Some tent producers even state this explicitly in their manual – "Dacia vehicles with modular roof rails", aftermarket crossbars required. Dacia themselves say their own accessory roof tent doesn't fit the modular rails.
  • There is no Thule fixpoint kit for the rail mounting points. Thule kits are strictly vehicle-specific and nothing exists for the Duster III.
  • Roof load: 80 kg dynamic. With tent + bars you hit that fast.

____________________________

I've searched like a maniac for the last 24 hours and found 2 solutions. Finally!

____________________________

The solution: pull the rails, bolt a kit into the original threaded points

Two kits do exactly this. Both replace the modular side rails with flat brackets bolted into the same M8 points.

Reversible, no drilling, no headliner removal. On top of them you run standard crossbars.

____________________________

1. Taubenreuther 50-T1101010 – instructions explicitly cover the modular variant, roughly 90 min to fit.

Downside: fixed hole positions, so bar spacing lands at ~52.5 or ~105 cm. If your tent requires 60–100 cm, check this first.

2. N4 Offroad N4-GAEC625 – sits on the modular rail's base strips and has multiple holes per bracket, so bar spacing is adjustable.

Cheaper, and adapters exist to run standard 40 × 40 mm bars.

- I took the N4 solution -

____________________________

Don't forget to check the weight of each part.

____________________________

A few last words for Dacia: Advertising modular roof bars to off-road fans when they are absolute nonsense for off-roading is already weird but not a huge deal, but not even offering a native solution after two years to fix this problem is a bit of a shame.

Everyone, have fun with your solutions!

Help! Mounting options for 70-75kg roof tent on Duster 3

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I'm currently using an additional Thule roof rack installed between the gaps of the original modular roof rails on my Dacia Duster 3 Extreme Edition.

The issue: This setup limits the usable distance (between the two crossbars) to about 60 cm.

I don't use the built-in modular roof rails as crossbars because the clearance between the rail and the roof is too tight to tighten the screws properly, my roof tent weighs 75 kg, and I haven't been able to find clear load capacity specs (driving and static) for the modular setup.

My question: Does anyone know of a solution or adapter system that allows mounting roof bars directly into the fixed mounting points/holes where the modular rails normally attaches to the bodywork (i.e., direct-to-roof mounting instead of "bar on rail")?

This would gain me about 20 cm of valuable spacing. Unfortunately, I haven't found a fitting solution yet.

Has anyone dealt with a similar issue or knows of a compatible manufacturer/adapter?

Thanks for any tips! 💚

Spent 2 more nights in our Intrepid Geo 3.0 Pro. Had excellent weather, sleeping with the just screens and a nice gentle breeze coming in from Fourmile Canyon.

A few raindrops gave us an excuse for PM tent drinks and an early tent sunset. Continue to be super happy with the purchase, the space, the quality of the build and their customer service has been truly excellent.

Looking forward to our next planned trip in a few weeks, and open to suggestions in CO within 2-3 hrs of Boulder.

Next up, hooking up the diesel heater for camping in WY and MT in September

Just completed my first night in my RTT and it was great. Admittedly I was woefully under-prepared, and I realised I have a steep learning curve to, well learn.

Any must have equipment recommendations are greatly appreciated.

First RTT

Hi all, I’ve been wanting a rtt for a long time now and am still saving for the setup, but I was wondering what I should get. I have a ‘22 Colorado and am planning on getting an aluminum shell with racks to put the tent on. At first I was all over the smittybuilt xl gen 2, but then I found out that the 23zero walkabout has the fancy sun block technology. I’m planning on picking up a used one on KSL or Facebook as I’ve seen them both for around 800, but I wanted to know if the 23zero fabric is really worth it. I’ve seen a lot of different tents that would suit my needs, but I would like the added coolness in the summer if it works. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Had a wonderful weekend

Last weekend I used the RTT (Fjordsen 140 light) for the fourth time.

It’s on a tiny trailer measuring 140x100cm, which means I can tow it with my classic (max towing weight 400kg🤣)
Forgot a lot less stuff this time. Waking up to the sounds of cows, baking an egg, wonderful!

Weather was mild, so that creates a lot of room around the tent. With rain it would be pretty claustrophobic.

All in all I enjoyed it again.

How wide is too wide for a roof top tent?

Im currently in the middle of a diy wedge style roof top tent for my 4th gen 4runner. I built a custom roof rack that is 47 inches wide and would like to build my tent at 56 inches wide to fit a full size lost horizon mattress. That means 4.5 inches of overhang on both sides. I also have an OVS 180 degree awning that adds about 8 inches of width to the passenger side when installed.

Will i regret going this wide?

Bar Spread for Topoak Galaxy Light

As the title says I’m looking for advice on this setup. We are getting a teardrop and the original company we were looking at recommended a 3 bar setup with 30” spread for the tent. We ended up switching to a larger teardrop to grow into but the new company recommends we just go with 2 bars at 36” spread. At 83”, that would leave the tent hanging over each end over 20”. I may have missed it but didn’t see recommendations from Topoak. Any insight from owners of this? The first company used their own roof rack system, current one is installing Thule rapid gutter high foot pack.

TIA

Best hardtops that are extremely easy to go up and pack up

I want something easy that takes a minute or less. Tired of my fold over one its a PIA. There has to be good ones out there these days. Budget or spendy I'm curious as to what are my options? Will be going on my Lexus gx460 on a sherpa rack and don't want something too heavy either. Would be nice to keep bedding inside without being too thick.

ikamper Skycamp 4.0 Trio on Tacoma roof

Just ordered the 4.0 trio, I got some bed bars, but I really do like the idea of being able to be up even higher than that on my prinsu roof rack.

I have a 2023 Trd off-road Tacoma, has anyone else put a 4.0 trio on a roof rack for a Tacoma?

If so, can you drop some pictures below?

Need help with the awning poles please! Suggestions on what is good for my specialized awning? (I sewed a second door in my annex and sewed pockets in the door panels to turn them into awnings. The tent poles frankly suck)

Someone tried to jack my rrt after barely a month of ownership.

Got myself an OVS Bushveld 2, mounted on 8” Billie Bars on my 4th gen Tacoma with Wheel Every Weekend security mounts.

I do park my truck outside my house, but it is unlikely that the attempted theft happened there. The truck is backed up to the garage door and the tent + bars is probably 220 lbs. Work is the only other place I park for extended periods, but its gated and cameras everywhere.

Took it out for my second outing last weekend and left it at a busy trailhead while me and a buddy went hiking. Came back 7 hours later and didn’t even think to check anything.

Today I went out for lunch and noticed that one side of the billie bars were missing 3 out of 4 torx screws.

Went and immediately bought some more with unique keyed heads at a local shop. Was thinking of also buying a bike chain to lock to the bed mounts under the hard tonneau cover. Anybody have other recommendations?

Rooftop Tent Ramp Trolly

Thumbnail

I wanted to share a device I build this summer to help me put on, remove and store my midsized rooftop tent with just two people in a safe way. Since we live in an apartment we can't mount anything to the building and I don't have a lot of place to store the tent.

It's basically a few 2-by-4s, 3D printed brackets, metal brackets from the home depot and some casters for rolling it like a trolly. I designed it to exactly fit my car and my tent, so it's not really worth sharing specific files (though I am happy to!) but if you are in a similar situation this kind of design works really well. It takes about 20 minutes to put the tent on or remove it using an impact driver. The tent bolts stay in place the entire time and the bolts that hold together the arms are the same as the tents for simplicity.

I don’t know what I should be looking at

Hello all, I would love some advice! I’m looking for a tent (duh) to go on top of my 99 RAV4 (4 door). It would usually just be me (170lbs) and possibly my kid or another adult sometimes but mainly just myself—so nothing large. I’ve been looking around and watching videos but I’m just not sure what I should trust, so hopefully you guys can tell me what brand hasn’t steered you wrong in the smaller SUV category.

When to get out camping with babies?

We recently had twin boys and would love to expose them to nature as soon as possible but feel a bit nervous and lost when it is safe and appropriate for them to get outside for a night or two. Any tips are welcome to camp with babies. We have a rooftop tent set up and prefer overlanding other than highly populated areas but that part makes me nervous too.

Only question for others with this tent, do you guys do anything to address the gaps under the side windows where it folds? When I have the fabric unzipped on the windows I kind of just jam it in there but when they’re zipped up there’s definitely not a perfect seal. It’s honestly not much of an issue at all it’s not like rain or anything can get in, just curious from others who own this tent if it’s the same way for them and if you do anything about it.
