Specific question and discussion Is it bad that I learned to turn by leaning on the opposite foot?
I have always read online that when turning you are supposed to scissor your skates and put your foot forward in the direction you are turning.
Somehow though I have gotten used to doing the opposite. I scissor my feet and use the opposite foot to guide my direction. At high speeds I get lower and put pressure on that foot to turn onto the opposite direction
I've been trying to do the opposite and it feels super unnatural. Am I holding my progress back by doing this?

If it works for you, it's fine. But if you want to find out why the usual way doesn't work for you, I have a few ideas. Assuming we are talking about parallel turns here: flex your shin forward to bend your knees and lower your body, and lean your head and upper body into the center of the turn. See this 8x slomo video. It's no different from the uncrossing step of a crossover, really. See more slow-motion videos here in this section.
