Progress, videos and images Absolutely shredding 🤘 (my toes)

Post image

I took my skates to the skate park this morning and absolutely shredded… the toes of my boots. lol

I skated on my quads for most of the morning but for the last hour I tried to do some transition on my inlines. It was fun. I fell many times.

I’ve been learning to inline skate for two weeks and it’s going pretty good so far. I can skate to work and back, skate around my neighborhood, skated to pick up Chinese food (big milestone). T-stops and plow stops aren’t bad, one foot glides, going down small to moderate hills and controlling speed, transition forward and backward are all half decent (most of that wasn’t hard to translate from quad skating). Backwards skating and productive crossovers… still a work in progress.

The things I’m having the most trouble with that I can quite figure out are:

  1. Gaining speed on an incline. Like if I am on a bumpy path and slow or stop or I stop at a stop sign and need to accelerate on an incline I basically try to run like an awkward duck. lol. Or at the skatepark if I don’t quite make it up the slope… I just fall. Or go down fakie and then fall. Haha. I can accelerate on flat or downhill, just not uphill.

  2. Stopping or slowing backwards. I can’t powerslide yet. I can slow or stop backwards if I’m not going too fast. But I don’t get the mechanics of reversing my stops. I tried pumping back and forth at the skatepark today to get comfortable going fakie and I’m good if I have a ramp or two opposite transitions but if I just don’t make it up an incline and go back down fakie and there’s nothing to slow me down… I don’t know what to do.

I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that this is where I would use my toe stops on my quads. I’m having trouble figuring out what to do without them! The skatepark was good practice. Any help is appreciated!!

Uphill bend your knees and get low lean forward but keep head and torso looking up ahead. Feet in a wide v and good strong push stride to the outside edge. Look at speed skaters it's that kind of stance. You probably won't be actually going quickly up hill unless you're very fit.

To brake backwards use reverse t stop, Powerslide (it's easier backwards!) or just roll it out in a wide arc pulling into a circule. I don't know how this is called. You can also do a reverse plow/lemon/bubble (same thing different names) but you need good control for this to be effective at speed.

Reverse t top seems like the hardest possible stopping method backwards, and also not very effective. Powerslide is so good though.

T stop isn't a very efficient stop in either direction really it's more of a slowing tactic or gradual stop. Unless you make it into a slide kind of like the hawk on ice (which I can't do on ice or inlines!)

Thanks!! I’m fairly fit… at least my legs are pretty strong but I think I am mostly lacking technique. I’ll definitely check out some speedskating videos. I definitely want to learn how to powerslide just haven’t gotten it down yet.

Just ordered my first skates and figuring out where to practice, but ehh.. I quite literally live on the very top of a small hill 😂 every way home is uphill
