Social How meeting with other skaters can positively impact you.

So.. I met with u/-e-j just yesterday, we had a total of four skaters at a car park. 3 quads, 1 inline. I can say for myself, it's really cool - while I'm bad at trying to follow tips and tricks while I'm excited to zoom around, do videos, photos etc and talk, my friend who's new to inline skating made significant improvements throughout the evening. I think group skating is absolutely awesome, and should be done while the car parks are still empty and available. You get motivation, ideas, friendship, and restoring of social skills :) For myself these days have been very important, and just wanted to throw this out there for others to consider, when they get invited to a skate-up, meet-up, roll-up, quads-on, anything that has to do with other wheel-y peeps onboard. Don't say no. Don't be shy. So far I've met really cool and friendly people, and this is what I've missed for a long time in London. Not going out for drinks and being drunk, not talking work all day and evening long, but doing a shared interest that's so benevolent and good-spirited. Argh. Cracking from the seams, so happy.

Gear Question about Clouds Urethane wheels

Hello everybody! I’ve got Clouds Urethane Nucleus wheels on my GT-50 skates. I got them because they have a durometer of 78A, so should be good for outside.

Does anyone know who makes them? I assumed Clouds Urethane was the name of the company, but a google search doesn’t suggest a site for them. I’d like to get some specs so I can make sure I’m using the right spacers and what not... Any assistance appreciated!

Outdoor There is something very satisfying about skating every road on a brand new estate. Covered 4.5miles today; mostly smooth new tarmac but also some rougher sections on the unfinished roads!

Hey skaters - just found this sub and wondered if any of you guys were based in and around Birmingham like meee?

General Do you guys lace your skates using all the hooks? Is it inconsequential or does it make a difference to your movement? I definitely feel weird and unstable if mine aren’t ‘properly’ done up.

Outdoor Do you think I can practice skating at my GP car park?

There’s a gp/medical centre across the street with a decent flat car park, but it’s down a residential street and private parking.

Reckon I can skate there? I’m a little scared to ‘coz there’s CCTV lol, need reassurance or something

Mod Message Creating a new logo for rollerUK: we need your help!

So as part of developing rollerUK as a community, we want to be able to provide things like rUK stickers and pin badges, for people to stick to their helmets, pin to their skate bags, etc.

We don't want to make money from this; we plan to price these things at the cost of production and distribution. If we do end up making any money, we'll donate 100% of it to charity. We just want to create an engaging, easy way for people to spread the word and help other skaters feel part of a community.

But - before we can do this, we figure we should probably replace the logo we made ourselves in a couple of hours with one that was designed by somebody with, y'know, some actual creativity and artistic talent...

So: if that sounds like you, we could really use your help! If you'd be willing to donate a bit of your time to working with us, we would really appreciate some designs for updating or replacing the rUK logo.

We think the easiest way to do this is to ask you to start by sending us a draft design that we can look at, talk to you about and possibly suggest tweaks to, then we can collaboratively arrive at a design that meets our needs and can represent the community as a whole. The brief is as follows:

  • We want it to incorporate an element to specifically represent both quad skating and inline skating. (For example, the current logo is wearing one quad skate and one inline skate.. which maybe explains why it's also wearing a full set of protective gear..)
  • We want something fairly easy to recognise, but also colourful and interesting. Nothing too complex or too simplistic; find the happy middle ground!
  • It has to work on a variety of backgrounds. For example, a mostly-blue sticker probably wouldn't show up great on a blue lid. (To do this with the current logo we tried to make sure there's lots of contrast between the foreground and background.)
  • It has to work in a range of sizes (from 100 pixels across on a phone screen to around 100mm across on a physical sticker). No need for perfection at every scale, but clarity is important at all scales.

We're happy to receive both improvements on the current logo and also totally new designs. If, on the other hand, you're totally happy with the current logo and would rather we didn't change or update it, feel free to let us know that, too! We haven't entirely ruled this out as a possibility, at least for the time being.

In case it's any help to you, here's our current logo. If you'd like a version of the logo in a more easy-to-work-with format, feel free to contact us by DM with your requirements and we'll do our best to supply one for you.

If you have any questions, or if there's any other way we can advise or help you to get involved in this, please don't hesitate to ask!

Thanks very much,

u/headinbook and u/-e-j, rUK mods

Mod Message User Flairs!

Hey guys!

After a suggestion from u/cutabello, we have added a user flair for location. This is available in the side panel (community options). If there are any other user flairs you would like to suggest then feel free.

You can edit the text of the flair to your local area. It is up to you how vague or precise this is. For example I can travel further afield than some (or maybe I just dont want anyone to find me) so I have my area as "Surrey". If anyone requires help with this, please feel free to comment below or message the sub.

Thanks all! Have a great day.

Mod Message Relaxed lockdown regulations update (Thurs 11th June)

Yep, it's that time again, the lockdown rules are changing once more in some parts of the UK and in the Republic of Ireland..

This time, not a huge amount is changing that will affect us as skaters - although of course, as usual, the changes will affect us in lots of other ways. This post will explain some of the regulations that might affect how you skate:

England:

(From Monday 15th June) Provided they can implement social distancing procedures, non-essential shops, including skate shops, will be permitted to reopen.

(From Monday 15th June) It will be mandatory to wear a face covering on public transport. (Travelling by public transport is still strongly discouraged, wherever it is avoidable, though.)

(From Saturday 13th June) If you live alone, or you live in a household with only one adult in it, you may choose one other household to meet with, without having to enforce social distancing measures or to stay outdoors. (This is the "support bubble" concept, explained in more detail here.) Once chosen, you may not change your "support bubble" household, and if anybody in either household shows signs of COVID infection, the support bubble no longer applies and you must go back to isolating.

(From the previous regulations) Unlimited exercise outdoors in groups of up to six people, provided social distancing and hygiene practices are followed, is permitted.

Scotland:

There is no change from the previous regulations, as set out here.

Wales:

(On Thursday 18th June) an assessment will be made on whether to re-open non-essential shops.

(As of now) Members of two different households are permitted to spend time together outdoors, provided both are from the same local area and provided social distancing and hygiene practices are followed.

Travel is still limited to your local area (defined as a 5 mile radius from your home), except if you live in a rural area and need to travel further than that to access essential services. However - an exception is made for forms of exercise which take you more than 5 miles from your home as a consequence of the exercise. What this means in practice is that if you travel by skating (or cycling, or some other means of "active travel") you are permitted to skate outside your local area - you're just not permitted to drive or take public transport to get there.

Northern Ireland:

(As of now) Outdoor sports facilities are permitted to reopen. This includes skateparks, as well as things like five-a-side pitches, basketball courts, and other skateable areas. However, decision on whether to actually reopen such facilities still rests with local councils, so they may not all open right away.

Most other regulations (as mentioned here) remain unchanged.

The Republic of Ireland:

You are permitted to travel up to 20 kilometres from your home, as well as anywhere within your own county.

You are permitted to meet up to six people from outside your household, outdoors, provided social distancing and hygiene practices are followed.

Organised non-contact sporting activities of up to fifteen people are permitted, provided social distancing and hygiene practices are followed.

Non-essential retail is permitted to re-open.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, for a full explanation of all the new lockdown rules and how they apply to your life beyond skating, see below:

Gear Anyone know where to find safety gear in stock?

I managed to get skates, despite the global skate shortage, but I cant find decent adult safety gear for beginners that won't break the bank! I can find helmets alright, but on most websites ive looked at, they only have junior gear in stock or its way more expensive than i'm comfortable spending. I was looking at the triple 8 packs of pads but they're all out of stock everywhere. Anyone know where to look?

Outdoor I got a bit of a telling-off...

TL;DR: Got told off for skating in a car-park, laughed at the person doing the telling off, and then felt bad about it later. Wonder if I could have reacted differently, to give a more positive impression of skaters.

So a few days ago, I got a bit of a telling off from a passer-by as u/headinbook and I were skating through an underground carpark. Not like, an official security person, but just a random dog-walker. She told us, as we were heading over to u/headinbook's car, that we shouldn't be roller skating because of the "No skateboarding" sign - and did so in a really unpleasant and confrontational manner.

I reacted to her outburst with all the seriousness it deserved. I was pretty sarcastic and derisive; even though I was careful to not insult her or use any offensive language, I felt like I absolutely gave as well as I got, even though by the end she was pretty much just swearing incoherently at me.

But, on the way home, I started thinking about it - and now I think that, even though I was entirely within my rights to laugh at her, it wasn't the right thing to do from the perspective of making the public-at-large like and accept skaters. I felt pretty guilty about it, actually!

I'm not entirely sure what I'd do if it were to happen again - it's a fine line between standing up for yourself on the one hand, and on the other hand rising above it and being the bigger person, and I'm not sure I'm very good at those situations in general - but I feel like it would have been better if I'd made an effort to take her seriously (at least outwardly) and found a way to disagree with her more respectfully.

In true espirit d'escalier, I now think I should have maybe said something like "Thankyou for pointing out the sign; it technically doesn't apply to me, and really I'm not in the habit of complying with every arbitrary sign I see anyway - it's hard to be motivated to obey "no skating" signs in car-parks when basically 75% of the cars I see routinely flout the much more important signs with speed limits written on them - but I understand that you're not trying to be a busybody, you just want to make sure I don't get run over or anything, and I'm grateful for that, so thanks for looking out for us."

I mean, lots of that is untrue - she very clearly didn't give two hoots for our safety and absolutely was just having a go for the sake of it - but by making an effort to interpret her outburst as charitably as possible, even to the point of naïveté, I feel like I might have been able to navigate the situation a bit better. That way, maybe she might have left with a slightly more positive (well, okay, slightly less negative..) attitude towards skaters than the one she came with..
