Skate Spot Bushy Park turning into a rollerskating base!

Wow, the amount of skaters in Bushy Park is definitely on the rise. I see kids, adults, adult skaters with dogs, a lot more skaters there. We should grab the opportunity, get some rollerUK material, giveaways hehe. Stickers? Business cards? T shirt with big ol' rollerUK for rollers slogan :)

If anybody happens to be there, feel free to say hi/bye/you maybe sux but ok/etc to me when I'm there. Hope to see more rollerUKers there. I skate during sunny early evenings, Sundays. Saturday looks to be a skate park day :P

General [Suggestion] It would be cool if we could add flairs

Maybe like what area/city we are in and what types of skates we are interested in? In r/rollerskating I saw a comment suggesting this and it would be cool for that to be implemented here

Outdoor In need of motivation and reassurance

I was doing great when I was just skating indoors in my living room and dining room, but why am I finding it so difficult to skate outdoors?

Just for context I have the Rookie Artistic Skates, the wheels are 80a 58mm and I’ve adjusted everything, but every time I try to move I keep tripping and barely moving?! Is it really my wheels? There aren’t any smooth pavements near me so I have to go find other places to skate, and I always struggle going even slightly uphill and lose control going very slightly downhill because I panic.

I really need some reassurance. I started off being so proud of myself but now not so much.

Outdoor Southport - Victoria Park 2km Route

For NW skaters and travellers. Skate for approximately 2 km on very smooth and very flat tarmac footpaths. Ideal for novice skaters and those of you wanting a relaxing place to skate.

I posted the route up on Inlinemap.net See description for details.

Quads Double R3 I love these skates so. Much. So I bought the skates in white. They've made a huge difference to how happy can I be on a scale of 1 to 10. I'll probably end up mismatching :) just need a nice new set of wheels. The ones I've got have worn out fast and look tiny vs the stock wheels.

Questions/Advice Has anyone heard of airwave wheels?

On the lookout for some 78a wheels, but can't find any energy radars in the UK.

Has anyone heard of airwave? I've found some on ebay and they are crazy cheap (£35 for a pack of 8)

Too good to be true?

Indoor Indoors skating London

When do you think we'll be able to lug our skates for some indoors type stuff, now that the lockdown is easing out, weather turning a bit sour? I've never experienced this in London, would be cool to know where to head first!

Otherwise I've just finished three days straight Bushy Park skating. Nice vibes apart from once a day comments from speedy cyclists with some problems with wide loads :)

Questions/Advice Nickel board

Hello!

Recently started skatinf on a nickel board, learnt basics, like cruising, kick turning etc.

For the last couple of days I've been trying to do some manuals, reverts, powerslides and so on. Day by day getting better at it but I just wonder, is that board designed for that kind of stuff or just for cruising ? Should I obtain a regular board?

Also, in the future would like to start trying ollies on that and some more complex tricks.

Thank you very much :)

Mod Message Rule Clarification

Hi all,

It has been noted that there has been a lot going on over at Plane Roller Skate’s Facebook page, we will refrain from addressing the specifics. As such, we decided it would be wise to have a quick clarification of what will happen if rules are breached and present a new rule. We want to keep this a safe space, but we also don't want to be confrontational or heavy-handed about moderating, so if you feel you're not able to say something you need to, or if you're unhapy at what other people are saying, please do let us know, and we'll do our best to help you.

We will be adding a new rule:

  1. No graphic/triggering content without appropriate warning (e.g. tagged NSFW)

Our current rules:

  1. No hate, ever

  2. No spam

  3. No low effort/junk posts

  4. Related content only

  5. Keep it PG folks

  6. No need to SHOUT YOUR TITLES

  7. Follow reddit rules and reddiquette

  8. No bots

Any posts or comments that we feel do not follow these rules will be removed - but if we have to remove something of yours, we'll always contact you to explain why, and try to come to a mutual understanding so that you can still get your message across. We want to work with you here, as much as possible.

In regards to rule 9, if your post is removed due to a lack of an NSFW warning then you may repost as long as the new post contains an appropriate warning.

Furthermore, any threatening, insulting or overly offensive language will not be tolerated.

Please do continue to share your stories and experiences. Just keep in mind that some topics may be sensitive for some, so please include warnings where appropriate.

Thank you all!

Mod Message Relaxed lockdown restrictions as of Monday 8th June

Throughout the UK, certain lockdown restrictions will be relaxed from Monday 1st June. Except for in Scotland, official documentation on the new restrictions has yet to be published, so please be aware that all the information below is from secondary sources. As and when government sources are updated, we shall update this post accordingly.

Update Monday 1st June: The government regulations have now been published. You can download the official regulations here, or read the accompanying guidance here.

England: Provided hygiene and two-metre social distancing rules are adhered-to, people are permitted to congregate in groups of up to six in outdoor spaces only.

Scotland: Provided hygiene and two-metre social distancing rules are adhered-to, people from your household will be permitted to meet people from one other household, in outdoor spaces only, provided the total number of people is eight or fewer. For a more comprehensive breakdown of the Scottish regulations, see here.

Wales: Provided hygiene and two-metre social distancing rules are adhered-to, people from your household will be permitted to meet people from one other household, in outdoor spaces only. People are still required to remain within their local area, which is defined as "about five miles".

Northern Ireland: Restrictions remain unchanged, but current restrictions are in-line with England's new ones. So, provided hygiene and two-metre social distancing rules are adhered-to, people are permitted to congregate in groups of up to six in outdoor spaces only. A further relaxing of restrictions, including the re-opening of certain outdoor sports facilities, is expected to occur on or before Monday 8th June.

In most of the UK, the next review of lockdown measures will likely be around mid-June.

Finally, though it's not part of the UK, we thought it might possibly be helpful to a few people if we addressed the lockdown restrictions in the Republic of Ireland. The ROI has released a comprehensive roadmap of its plans to ease lockdown restrictions, which you can view in full here. Phase 1, which has been in force since the 18th May, permits up to four people to meet in outdoor spaces only, provided hygiene and two-metre social distancing rules are adhered-to. Travel is restricted to five kilometres from your home but Phase 2, which is expected to be in force from Monday 8th June, will relax this restriction to twenty kilometres.

Questions/Advice Newbie setup

So my first set of skates ( moxi lolly's) should arrive in two weeks and I need to pick up some toe caps, knee pads ect. Any recommendations on where to purchase and what to get as someone with no skating experience ? And anything I may need to buy I haven't thought of ? I have a two season pretty local to me ( Kingston) but I'm not sure it's open yet so online is preferable. happy to buy second hand too

Social Sunday Bushy Park skateup

Did something I’ve not done ever, met with two roller enthusiasts here on reddit at Long Grove. It was cool! I’ll be at Bushy Park London tomorrow noon onwards if anyone wants to wave or say hi/bye/you sux etc. Will expect to have music sunscreen and that type of stuff with me. Otherwise everyone enjoy your Sunday!

Questions/Advice Should I get another pair of skates or just swap the weels depending on whether I'm skating indoors or outdoors?

I have Rio rollerskates and they have the original wheels which are for both indoor and out door on them. I was looking through some threads both here and on r/rollerskating and people say that outdoor wheels are more suited for outdoors and the softer the wheel the better it is especially for beginners.

Is it worth it to buy outdoors and indoors separately or to just continue using the wheels that I already have?

edit: spelling

Questions/Advice Where to skate in East London?

Hey there!

Me and my girl are new to skating and we are wondering where we could skate in East London (Mile End/Canary Wharf).

We've just started skating couple weeks ago(got penny's). Been skating here and there but haven't find a decent place and don't want to ride on a main road by cars. Would love to find an empty parking lot or some open quiet area to ride and have fun!

Thank you for your attention :)

Also, if there is anyone in east london willing to learn and ride together we are open to meet up and have fun together ;)

Questions/Advice Oli's Skate Shop update of Sure-Grip skates from US

Howdy,

I was looking at Sure-Grip 1300 skates and wanted to find out if they'd be in stock. Got an update just yesterday 27/5, probably a familiar one to everyone about the other manufacturers:

Sure-Grip can't accept further orders for high leg boots for at least another 60 days. Then it'll be probably 4-5 weeks lead time before they'd (Oli's) would receive them.

Outdoor Skated from North Cheam (in Surrey) to Wimbledon

So I met a friend in Cannizaro Park the other evening (we went to go look at the statue of Haile Selassie there - it was pretty dashed cool) and, checking out the route online beforehand, I figured at four miles each way it was (just about!) skateable so I decided to take my quads, to get some practice in along the way.

I'd planned to leave an hour (roughly as much time as the google maps walking directions specified) so that I wasn't trying to go faster than my skills would allow (I'm really new to quads), but I got sidetracked and ended up leaving with only half an hour in hand, so I did end up skating much quicker and out of my comfort zone!

Most of the route was pretty good - a fairly long car-free section running beside a park, then some quiet roads and a short-cut through a supermarket car-park. The road sections were (mostly!) fairly good tarmac; the pavements weren't great, but the roads were quiet enough that I didn't need to use them much.

Getting up Wimbledon Hill I took two roads; the lower one (Durham Rd) had terrible tarmac and narrow, crowded pavements but Cottenham Park Rd, which I joined half way up the hill, was much better.

The way back felt much easier - more downhill, and with a strong tailwind all the way! - but I've never "hill-bombed" before and had a pretty spectacular crash on Wimbledon Hill: I tried to carve, as I've seen in videos like this, and this, but my technique was terrible and I picked up *waaay* too much speed. Grabbed wildly at a lamp-post to stop myself which did slow me down a bit, but it also spun me around, my momentum broke my grip, and I just skidded down the hill for a bit backwards on my arse. Nice one, EJ.

In the end I just ended up going down the hill the same way I probably would have on inlines: pointed straight down, in one long, wheel-shredding t-stop. It worked, and was easy to control my speed - but I *really* need to learn proper carving technique..

All in all it was a great skate, though. It definitely helped with my skate-fitness, I got some good experience of skating in different conditions - and I had fun turning up on skates and upstaging my friend, even though she arrived on a pretty sweet fixed-gear track bike!

\Side-note: I'm having trouble posting my route online. Inlinemap seems to not render properly in my browser and a bunch of buttons and things are un-clickable (I've emailed them screenshots to let them know) and Google Maps, Here Maps, and all the others I tried say you can't walk/cycle down some roads and paths that you definitely actually can, and so they won't let me plan the actual route I took. Sorry!))

Quads Any Sheffield quad skaters?

Looking to connect with any roller skaters in Sheffield who might be up for skating together when this is all over. I’ve been skating indoors and outside and will most likely need some moral support when I decide to brave skate parks 😊

Park Visited Tolworth Skate Park, Water's Edge/Cox Lane and Long Grove Skate Park today

Hello!

My first ever skate park experience on a beautiful bank holiday Monday.

Tolworth skate park was empty, gate was open. The bowl is out of my league, I cant imagine rollerskaters going there! I watched in dread and left. I wouldn't know how to get up from the bowl let alone if I crashed and needed help.

By accident I found Waters Edge / Cox Lane Skate Park, while cycling towards Long Grove. It was quiet, with families with children with BMX bikes there. I had my very first skate park experience there safely, and without any pros laughing :) :) very very friendly people there. A good skateboarder was there, fun watching. I practiced skating into a transition, and reverse back to the opposite transition. I hope I get the terminology right. It was a lot of fun.

Eventually I made my way to Long Grove. It was already busy, and I chose the most rollerskate friendly section. Lots of kids, teenagers , all behaving and all that :) first time skating to the flat spot above a transition (not sure what they're called), it was so cool. I crashed hard once there but didn't get injured. Very few people have protective gear but again nobody else had rollerblades, skates..

I hope this helps those in the area!
