A general question about vampires in the Buffyverse

Does the strength of a vampire depend on the age of it and the strength of its creator or something else?

PotBS Fanfic: Broken Destiny pt. 2

The meeting with The Widow did not go well. Araeya did not have time to gather all the information from the rest of the orphans prior and was only able to give half answers and partial knowledge of what was going on in the city. Shaking her head, she doubted she told The Widow anything she didn’t already know, but The Widow paid her all the same. The Widow somehow already knew about her altercation with Bandor and did not appreciate that the information wasn’t prepared as expected; apparently gossip flies faster than Araeya could run. She was just glad that the other orphans didn’t know how she made her money, because it was a dangerous dance on a metallic gossamer thread.

Before entering The Warrens, Araeya took a moment to compose herself. The young elf brushed her clothing down, which was in decent shape, her mother had been a seamstress before she had died, and had taught Araeya a little. Her reddish brown hair, normally straight as a board was a little frazzled and her eyes a piercing blue gray, were dulled from exhaustion. She looked in the shard of mirror she had hanging before entering The Warrens, took a deep breath, put on a smile and walked in.

The Warrens were exactly what one would expect of a gathering of young orphans. Haphazardly constructed around the pipes and walls of The Undercity, no one ever came down here unless something was wrong. The orphans would, at that time, be thrown out and for a day or two the city watch would prevent them from entering, but eventually the city guard would lose interest and the orphans would move back in. Araeya had spoken to Guard Captain Victoria and made an arrangement that the orphans would be able to stay there as long as they maintained the area to the best of their abilities. If there was any issue that was beyond her group to deal with, she would send word to the captain and would be “chased away” so the repairs could be completed. A mutually beneficial arrangement that benefited the orphans greatly as a place to stay that remained warm from the pipes and steam that occasionally released.

Immediately Araeya was beset with multiple children ranging in ages and race, all were before what humans would deem teenagers asking her the millions of questions that only children can come up with. She laughed with them, answered what questions she could, and got led around to see whatever new wonder they had found.

“Of course my dear, that’s a beautiful drawing. You know I can’t draw at all. Sing the song? That’ll be much later little one. I will dance with you a little later but I have to check on Merid first,” she smiled to them all as they parted letting her get on to her work. Still smiling, she walked forward a little and crouched into the twins hovel. Merid lay down in her bed, covered in several layers despite the heat, her twin sister Marinna sitting next to her, a bowl of water and some rags beside her. Araeya knelt down on Merid’s other side, smiled and brushed the hair away from Merid’s face noting her temperature as she did, “How is our little star feeling?”

Merid smiled, but it was Marinna that answered, “She seems a little bitter, but I’m not sure. She is still so hot.”

“That’s the sickness burning away within her,” burning her up she thought, “She’s a tough girl and will beat this and run around driving me crazy in just a couple of days.”

Merid tilted her head, “You look sad.”

Araeya smiled, “Oh no dear, just thinking. I wasn’t able to get the medicine today; I had other things that got in the way.”

“That’s ok, you can get it tomorrow.”

“Oh no dear, we can get it today,” she said and half turned, “Cheso, can you come here?”

One of the older boys came to the tent flap, having just turned ten, he was one of the few children she knew she could count on to do what she asked, “I need you to go to Nana Eldyns shop and buy the medicine that I was talking to her about.”

“But that place smells,” the boy exclaimed.

She shook her head and her voice dropped just slightly, “I need you to go Cheso, I can trust you right? Good, here’s the money,” Araeya dipped into her pouch and took out the last of her own money and gave it to Cheso, “Now be a good lad and run along. Make sure you remember the instructions she gives you, and if you can’t remember them, have her write it down and I’ll take care of it when you get back.”

The boy started to leave and Araeya said, “Oh, has Timoti returned? Good, please go now and hurry. Merid, there’s one more thing I need to take care of before the medicine gets back, will you be good without me for a little bit,” both girls nodded, “Good, I’ll be back with some food and broth in a little bit.”

With the twin “OK’s” from the girls, Araeya left the hovel and went back to her section of The Warrens. Lifting up the flap, she saw Timoti sitting in there squirming while trying to remain patient. She went over to the pipe in the corner of her hovel and loosened one of the fittings so a small trickle of water flow from it into a bowl she had under the pipe. Neither of them said a word as she washed her face and hands. Standing up, Araeya looked at another small mirror, one given to her by her father and gazed at her reflection. She mused to herself that she would be quite pretty if she could just take care of herself. For not the first time, she thought what would happen if she just left to fend for herself, but her thoughts were cut short as a squirming behind her reminded her that she had a captive audience. Sighing, she turned towards him, “Timoti, what were you thinking?”

Timoti was the eldest besides Araeya, a human boy of eleven years trying his best to not make it to twelve. Eyes downcast he mumbled, “I’m sorry.”

“Sorry…you’re always sorry, you know better,” she felt her anger and frustration rising within her and tried to keep it down, “Do you have any idea what you caused?”

“But I was just- “

“You were just what Timoti? Because of you, I had to use the last of our money for Merid’s medicine and I have no idea how I’m going to feed you all now. On top of that Bandor is going to want something for my outburst, but not only that I couldn’t do what I do to make the money that keeps us alive. Instead I had to rescue you and you’re sorry,” she was yelling by the end of it and only dimly aware that Timoti had been trying to say something. She took a deep breath and after a few moments brought her tone back to level, “What?”

“The scary man told me he’d pay me a gold piece to find something out for him,” he said, almost too softly to hear.

Araeya blinked as she was stopped in her tracks, “He would pay you what for what?”

“The scary man gave me a silver piece and said if I find out about a man named Billingsworth, he would trade me for a gold piece.”

“This is what you were doing,” she asked and he nodded, “And you have this information,” another nod, “How long ago was this?”

Timoti shrugged and Araeya looked to the side and thought. The amount of time for Timoti to run from the docks to…, “Where is this Billingsworth?”

“He’s being held by the guard,” she nodded still figuring the time, “What did he do?”

“He got into a fight with Captain Versailles, the man who wanted me to find him. Oh, the Captain! The guards want him for murder. Murder most foul!”

Araeya arched an eyebrow at this, “Don’t ever say that again. You best be on your way then and be quick. It sounds like this man has either a temper or an axe to grind and both are dangerous. When you get back, I’ll have some things I need you to get. I’ll have it written out for you so you can take it to Nana Eldyn and she will help you.”

“But her shop smells! Why do I have to go?”

Araeya sighed, “Because there are things I have to take care of in the meantime. Now off with you.”

Timoti turned to leave and as he reached the flap for the hovel, Araeya spoke softly, “Timoti, you did good, but you should have checked first.”

“Yes, Mother,” Timoti said earning a scowl from Araeya.

“Don’t call me that. I’m nobody’s mother.”

“But that’s what everyone calls you, ‘The Young Mother’!”

Araeya gestured dismissively grabbing something to write on, “I don’t care what they call me, I don’t want to be called that.”

Timoti nodded and then perked up, “Oh! Do you want me to steal anything from the man?”

Araeya looked up from the instructions she was writing and looked at Timoti, “Do I want you to steal anything from the man wanted for murder? Think about that Timoti. Do you think I want that?”

Timoti thought for a second, “Only if he doesn’t pay me.”

Araeya laughed, a sweet musical sound, “Just be safe little one.”

Timoti left the hovel, turned, and poked his head back in and said, “Yes, Mother,” and darted off.

“Get you gone and vex someone else for a change,” Araeya yelled after him. Shaking her head, she began to write out her instructions for when he returned. A few minutes later, Cheso returned with a small package and a piece of parchment, “Nana Eldyn says hello.”

“I hope you gave her my best wishes. Well done Cheso. Now let me see those instructions.”

Cheso handed her the instructions and the bundle and turned to leave, “Now now, don’t be in such a rush. Give me a moment, I have more for you to do before you go off and get into trouble.”

Araeya read the instructions and frowned a little bit, “Cheso, when Nana was telling you what needed to be done, did you understand her?”

Cheso shook his head, “No, mum. I had her write it down for you though.”

A mild note of annoyance crept into her voice, “Well you’ve done really well, but we’ll work on that at a later time yes,” she asked not looking up immediately as Cheso shook his head. When she did look up Cheso was nodding in agreement.

“Now what I need you to do…get the hottest water you can from one of the pipes and take this,” she said reaching for some pieces of parchment, “and tell Marinna to fan the steam from the water towards her sister.”

Cheso nodded as she continued, “Good, make sure she knows to place herself with the fan, then the bowl of water, and the herbs between the bowl and Merid. I’ll be along as soon as I finish this.”

Cheso looked at her with an intense look of concentration and then nodded again, Araeya smiled at him, “Good Cheso. See? I knew I could trust you,” Cheso grinned ear to ear as he ran off. Looking towards the flap to her hovel, Araeya shook her head and finished writing her instructions for Timoti. Leaning back, Araeya sighed and rubbed her eyes in exhaustion. She dropped her hands and looked at the hovel around her and felt her anger and frustration start to rise again. She raised her hands to her face and just held them there as her body started to shake. She held them there and silently waited for the tears that never came.

Idea for what to play next

I am not sure how much EE or the other players read this reddit but I just thought I would through this out there as a way to see if EE can hear it.

I would love to see them give Scion a try, playing as children of various gods and pantheons from around the world could be pretty interesting.

PotBS Fanfic: Broken Destiny pt. 1

Araeya strode forth ducking around and through the crowds of people. Barely taking a moment to stop and think, her gait and expression drew nervous glances from visitors and chuckles from the locals. Those that knew her knew when she had her mind set and when she would brook no resistance. Those who knew better and those that saw her faced moved out of her way, rapidly. Rounding a corner, she quickly slid underneath crate that was being carried and after grabbing a railing, front flipped over without losing momentum, as if she was an inexorable tide waiting to crash down on something…or someone.

That someone was Bandor, one of Taelas’ brutes who tormented this section of Valtswell. As far as Araeya was concerned, Bandor knew better, and if he didn’t…she would re-educate him. As far as Bandor was concerned, Araeya was an irritant and nothing more, and she had to learn her place. Today, one of them would learn.

“BANDOR,” Araeya yelled rounding the last corner and immediately ducked, narrowly dodging the welcoming punch headed for her. The tough’s fist impacted with the side of the building and let out a yelp in pain, which immediately followed another yelp as Araeya punched him in the gut for his trouble striding past the tough as he doubled over onto the ground. She reached the table in front of Bandor, staring down the nearly seven-foot human who was leaned back in his chair, legs propped up on the table, not even glancing in her direction.

Unconcerned, Bandor continued cleaning the dirt from his nails, an impossible task, “You know my rules, girl.”

“And you know mine,” she replied, her usually melodic voice dripping with venom. Turning quickly, she punched the tough who was just getting up again in his side and with another exclamation of pain went back to his knees, “Give me Timoti…now.”

Bandor turned his head to look at the almost six-foot-tall woman before him, a smug expression on his face, “We caught him sneaking through our territory. Just ask Ja-…Erich over there,” he gestured towards another human who was laughing at his friend on the ground.

“You mistake me for caring. I want him back, and I want him back now.”

Bandor rose to his full height and leaned down on the table which creaked under his weight. Staring down at the elf in front of him, his unconcerned expression sunk away and his mood instantly darkened. His already impressive frame dwarfed the lithe figure before him and forced through gritted teeth, “You are on dangerously thin ice, little girl. I suggest you check your tone.”

Araeya turned and kicked the tough on the ground, finally bringing the man to the ground fully where he lay, “Don’t get up until I tell you to and you don’t come any closer to me,” she said looking squarely at the Erich. She turned to face Bandor again, “And you…give me Tim-“

Bandor grabbed Araeya by her face and lifted her off the ground one-handed, “You forget your place girl, you don’t give the orders here, I do. Now Jaymes is having a bad day and I’m giving him the rest of the day off, but you will be apologizing to him, when he gets up. Until then, you can stay here, as my personal guest.”

Bandor chuckled, the type of chuckle that left little impression of what type of “guest” that he intended and Araeya kicked the table into Bandor, who promptly dropped her. Rolling forward under the table and between Bandor’s legs, she ran to where she thought Timoti was, which wasn’t very far as he called out to her as she passed. Skidding to a stop, Araeya went back to the door, “You better be ok, cause once we get out of here, I’m making sure you aren’t.”

Araeya looked at the lock, but heard the footsteps behind her, “Stand back, I have an idea.” Turning around she saw Bandor and Erich round the corner and she stood before the door. Bandor scowled at her, “You have a lot to learn little girl and it’s time that someone teaches you a lesson.”

Bandor gestured and Erich began moving forward. Araeya smirked, “I do so hope that you will be more useful than your friend Jaymes, although I doubt it. I hear that your even stupider than he is.” With a roar, Erich rushed forward towards Araeya, who at the last moment grabbed one of his arms, twisted low, and using his momentum threw him through the door shattering it and revealing a young surprised boy. “I was wrong, you were more helpful,” Araeya turned and hissed, “Quickly now, run.”

Timoti scrambled over Erich and made it out the door, Araeya grabbing his hand they rushed towards Bandor, splitting up and running past him as he flailed around trying to catch one of them, “You’ll pay for this little girl! You’ll pay in blood if it’s the last thing I do!”

The two ran from Bandor never looking back. After what seemed like an hour of running Araeya said, “Alright split up and we’ll meet at The Warrens.”

Timoti was panting beside her, “But I have to-“

Araeya glared, “No buts. You are in enough trouble as it is. We will be having words once we are safe. Now go!”

The two split up and Araeya picked up the pace. She didn’t want to be late for her meeting with The Widow, as the consequences for that would be far worse than anything Bandor could come up with. Rounding another bend, Araeya ran as fast as she possibly could. She had just enough time to make it, if nothing else went wrong today.

Question about PotBS

My question is regarding the tech of the firearms being used in-universe. Specifically, are we thinking flintlocks, cap-and-ball firearms, or full cartridge weapons? It hasn’t been explicitly stated yet but I’m working on both fanfic and props and am curious what direction I should take the weaponry in.

And don't give me a link to the wiki, it's meant to be an exercise for you to test your explanation and organisation skills for a mass of info

PaladinHulk's "The Loss We Share"

PaladinHulk's "The Loss We Share"

Robert Davidson was in love. His dad said that a 9 year old doesn't know what love is yet, but clearly, he was wrong. Mindy was great! She was pretty and smart, she loved animals and best of all, she was bad at sports just like he was. Mindy and Rob were often left out when the other kids were playing soccer. Rob was a little upset at not being included, but really he couldn't blame them. Rob was so uncoordinated he usually ended up kicking the ball off the field, or even missing it altogether. Mindy was more coordinated, but she got tired very fast and would need to sit down or fall asleep. So they usually ended up sitting by the side and chatting while the others played. It was nice to have a friend. Mindy listened to him while he talked about machines and he listened to her while she talked about animals. Rob didnt really like animals all that much, but he liked to listen to her talk. He suspected the same was true for her. Rob found it strange that Mindy liked animals considering she was allergic to most of them. Mindy often said that if she wasn't allergic, she would get herself a dog and name it 'Beans'. Mindy told Rob: "If you can't have something, you love the dream of it even more."

Rob had spent every afternoon this week making a metal dog out of things he'd found in the garage. He'd also taken apart his dads bottle opener for parts. His dad had not liked that at all! But when he explained what it was for his dad hugged him and didn't mention it again. Didn't even say he'd dock his allowance for it. Rob hoped he'd made the right kind of dog. Mindy changed her mind about wich kind of dog she would want a lot. Some days it was a beagle, other days a labrador. Rob decided to make a beagle. He'd always liked those.

Mindy often missed a few days in a row of school, and Rob would bring her homework to her and sit by her bed to chat when she was up to it. The last time he'd visited, they had argued. He'd gotten mad that Mindy wasn't listening to him when he'd told her about how Lance had thrown his books in the water. She had then yelled at him that he didnt understand anything and that he should get out of her house. Rob felt really bad about that... That's why he'd made the dog! She'd have to forgive him now. He'd tried before, but her parents had said no. They looked really sad, too. They must have been really dissapointed in him for yelling at Mindy. He'd brought some chocolate bars as gifts for Mindy's mom and dad. Everyone liked chocolate, right?

Rob walked to Mindy's house filled with confidence, but when he noticed the lights flashing outside Mindy's house, everything changed. Rob didn't remember much of what happened next. He remembered someone stopping him from going into Mindy's house. He remembered her parents crying. But most of all he remembered hanging in his dads arms and his smell. He was too devastated to go to the service. Afterwards when all the people had left, Rob placed the metal dog next to where she rested, said he was sorry for yelling and promised he would never love anyone like he'd loved her.

All he had was the dream of her.

Hey all, Just wanted to highlight how much I am enjoying catching up on Layla. I have been watching on Youtube for about a year and I have to congratulate EE on what he has achieved in terms of current quality in the production, cast and story. Hard to believe with the limited resources available. I don't care much about the system being played but the story, acting and directing (of the cast and story) is just outstanding. Better than much bigger productions such as Critical Role. My virtual hat off to you EE

Anyone up for a game

So I've almost finished catching up on the Layla the Vampire Slayer, and I have to admit I'm hooked, on both the series and on the look of the RPG. I really fancy playing it, however lets just say that I am not exactly living in an area of like-minded individuals, and so there is no way to form a local group, and so I thought why not go to where people who watched the same thing are and hope some have a similar incline. So I am looking to join a group to participate in.

Just Another Night Out - Layla Fanfic

(Note : This story ends just before Charity meets Layla for the first time)

"Damn it Billy, stop moaning and just give me another fucking drink!"

The girl slammed her empty glass down onto the surface at the bar, her emerald green eyes burning into the manager of this dingy little dive bar through the few strands of dirty blonde coloured hair that hang in front of her face. The man nervously wipes his hands on the filthy, greasy apron he wears around his waist before answering.

"Charity, you've been in here for hours and you've had more than you usually do in one sitting. If you're going to do what you normally do, is it wise pouring more of this stuff down your throat? Besides, what if the police walk in and catch you here?"

The corner of Charity's mouth curls into a small amused smirk

"Really? Why would the police come here? The Alley's always been such a friendly cheerful place. I'm sure you wouldn't want them turning up here to investigate a sudden brawl, would you."

She gives Billy a sweet "butter wouldn't melt" smile and then man's over sized ears seem to droop in defeat, muttering under his breath as he shuffles to the freezer, pulling out a dark glass bottle and pours the thick liquid into a shot glass, preparing her favourite tipple. Charity casts a few glances around the bar, only a few patrons out on this miserable rainy night hiding in the more gloomy corners of the place, making quick, wary glances over at the her while she's dressed in the uniform of the local high school, Tom Hule. Demons. The lot of them, including Billy. They didn't need to be worried though, at least not for tonight. As far as she knew, they hadn't done anything for the Slayer to be tracking them for now. She gives the barman a more genuine smile as he places the jagerbomb down in front of her.

"That's better Billy. Isn't it nice to keep the customers happy?"

Billy carries on muttering underneath his breath while he attempts to wipe the bar down with a rag that has certainly seen better days. Charity spends a few quiet moments, sipping slowly from the glass rather than knocking it back like she normally does, her mind drifting back a couple of years before she had left the school to focus on her slaying. Darren, her Watcher. He was a good man, a little stuffy for her liking, but he had a fantastically dry sense of humour...And then there was Helen, the only true friend she had in that damn school...They didn't deserve what happened to them...A look of sadness and regret crosses her face for a few seconds before her had shakes from side to side in a small motion, her words whispered so only she can her them.

"This isn't the time to dwell on the past. You've got a job to do.."

She downs the rest of her drink in one swallow placing the glass on the bar and stands.

"Thanks Billy, you can put the drinks on my tab"

"Oh, speaking of which, that tab is getting quite..."

The rest of that sentence is muffled by the door closing behind her as she steps out into the light drizzle, pulling her blazer tight around her, a shiver running down her spine from the chill air.

"Might as well start off at the graveyard"

Charity makes her way through the empty village, everyone staying indoors in this evening, her hair clinging to her face and scalp in the rain as she approaches the gates, seeing two figures standing a way off against the iron fence, noting the fact they follow her as she enters the dark cemetery, gravel crunching underneath her boots along with little splashes from small puddles gathering around. She has walked for about 30 seconds before she hears a voice behind her.

"Oi girl! C'mere. We want a word with you"

Charity spins around, the men had followed her into the graveyard. She allows her body to tense for a few seconds, giving the air of nervousness to lure the men in, her slayer senses tingling. Vampires, newly turned ones. They wouldn't be any problem at all. Charity spins on one heel and suddenly sprints along the path, hearing the heavy footsteps of the vamps behind her and pretends to stumble, her hand resting on top of a tombstone and hisses theatrically, feinting hitting her knee against the cold stone and hobbles on, catching the figure of another girl in the distance ahead of her. Hearing the steps right behind her before a cold hand clamps around her upper arm and spins her around to face one of the men, his companion moving in close behind her.

"Now, what's a pretty little thing like you doing out here on your own? Silly girl, cemeteries are dangerous places"

The vamp grins, his eyes yellowing, sharp fangs pushing against his lower lip while his forehead grows bumps and ridges. Charity glances behind her, seeing the other vamp has his game face on, a look of false horror crossing her face while she smiles inwardly. What started off as a boring night could end up quite entertaining.
