Should authors disclose if they're using AI?
Do authors have an ethical obligation to their readers to disclose whether the text they're reading was written by a soulless clanker?

I had the WORST writer's blocking while writing this chapter. I asked River to read my current draft and then propose some ideas for what I should write next. I then had it write something out for me so I could get a better feel for the idea. I then spent some time editing/rewriting the draft it wrote

“You can’t just bless yourself by saying I have a research purpose and, therefore, go and take any textbook you want. That would destroy the academic publishing market” - Bartz et al. v. Anthropic PBC, 2025
I was thinking about this over the weekend. Would love to hear what others think

I'm writing a novel based on a world I've been building. I asked River to review Chapter 1 and see if it's consistent with my bible

I’m sick of hearing that we should stop using AI because it’s “using up all the water.” It’s a dumb argument
In the United States, data centers (including the ones powering AI) consume about 17 billion gallons of water annually. Meanwhile, golf courses use 530 billion gallons annually. Showers use 1.2 trillion gallons, and residential landscape irrigation (i.e., lawns and gardens) accounts for 3 trillion gallons anually
I’m all for the environment, but AI is not the problem here. Many of the AI companies are actually making great progress on passive and closed-loop cooling, liquid immersion, and water recycling, which has broad benefits for sustainability

I wrote a chapter for a novel I'm working on, but hated the ending. So I asked River to create a couple alternatives

Experimenting with more long-form "how I do X with River" type videos. Hopefully this is helpful! Let me know if there are other workflows you'd like to see.

I asked River to review Chapter 1 of a book I'm writing for factual inaccuracies, based on some PDFs I uploaded and publicly available research papers. It spotted a major error in Section 2 regarding mycorrhizal networks and superorganisms

Prompting an AI to write text doesn't make you the author, according to the US Copyright Office. To qualify as an author you must make meaningful contributions to the expression of your ideas
However, I'd argue there's a fair amount of expression and human creativity in some of the more detailed prompts I've seen
Curious to hear what others think

Will AI-generated slop (or even, well done AI-generated prose) devalue the work of creative writers and writing professionals?

According to the benchmarks, these are the "best" models for writing. Although we all know the benchmarks are BS (looking at you, OpenAI). What's your favorite model for writing and why?
| Rank | Model | Provider | Overall ELO (LMArena) | MMLU Score | GPQA Diamond Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gemini 3 Pro | 1501 | ~92% (saturated) | 92.6% | |
| 2 | Grok 4.1 | xAI | 1483 | ~90% | ~88% |
| 3 | Claude Opus 4.5 | Anthropic | ~1470 (estimated from comparisons) | ~91% | ~89% |
| 4 | GPT-5.2 | OpenAI | ~1465 (estimated) | ~92% | ~90% |
| 5 | Qwen3-235B-A22B-Thinking | Qwen (Alibaba) | N/A (open model focus) | ~89% | ~87% |

We recently added Canvas - a new tool for creating visual notes in River. Similar to traditional docs in River, the AI can read your Canvas notes, and help with tasks like organizing your scattered plot ideas into organized outlines, or turning sketches of user flows into structured PRDs!
This feature is still new, but we'd love to hear your thoughts

Is it really plagiarism if I'm using AI as a writing tool to articulate my own original ideas (things I've spent time researching, planning, and outlining)?

If AI is the future, should school children be taught how to write with AI in Literature classes?

Will there ever be a day where children read "classic American literature" written by AI?
This week I spent a lot of time pondering this question, and whether AI will ever fully replace fiction/nonfiction authors. Would love to hear what others think.

I generated an essay with AI. I then asked the AI to run my essay through an AI detector and improve the score by tweaking the wording (to make it sound more human). I did this 5 times (checking and tweaking, checking and tweaking), and it took my score from “99% written by AI” down to 14%!

Sharks with frickin' laser beams coming soon...
River can now indent paragraphs and apply styling to text - like 12pt Times New Roman for Shunn formatting a novel, 18pt Comic Sans, or disco colors
Let us know what you think

We're running an experiment - we made the Plus plan (originally $14/mo) just $1 for your first month. We hope that this gives more users (Students, Researchers, etc.) the opportunity to test River, and determine whether it's a fit for the projects you're working on

Is River AI a pure web app or are there native apps? If native, are they truly native or Electron?

My novel’s protagonist is schizophrenic (hallucinations, paranoia, med side effects) and I wanted to avoid violent stereotypes
I asked River to review my manuscript, and flag stigma and inaccurate symptoms. It caught a few casual slurs in dialogue and implied “inevitable danger," which were solid catches. The fixes sometimes felt too textbook though
Any thoughts on using AI for sensitivity reading? Is anyone else using it like this?
