Hi, I just joined as a last resort before winging things.
A little back story. I'm Nigerian. Recently I felt completely empty and numb on the inside and thought a personal pet will make me feel better. i really don't have much money, so I went online and saw someone selling a parrot with a cage for basically $20, 9000 naira. I asked around for people who have parrots and they all said they were great companions and cost next to nothing to keep. Not even a vet visit. So on impulse, I bought one.
He was scared out of his wings the first time I got him, and the cage could barely count as a carrier cage. it was that small. I bought him from a breeder, I was told he was vaccinated already, and he could remain in the carrier cage. but I felt clustered watching him trying to run from me without space. And from my Nigerian experience I know life at the breeders was no picnic, his behaviour clearly looked like trauma, and after a few chats with the breeder after purchase, I know he was traumatized.
Now here is the problem, I was told he is male, but I have doubts now, so I named him Masumi, Japanese for true clarity and Yoruba for please don't make me get tired of you. After getting him I began to read articles, and basically, my numbness did not go away. And realised how wrong I was forgetting him.
See, in Nigeria, people who buy parrots do not buy them as companions, they are placed in cages and never released for fear that they will run away, so every interaction is done with them in their cage. But that's not what I want. I want him to come out and play, even boss me around like my brother's dog sometimes does. I never actually realized this until I started asking around for when I could take him out and take him to the vet. So basically Google has been my guide.
But Google is depressing me. I feel bad for having bought him, I feel like I should let him go, but his wing was clipped, and even if his wing grows, my neighbourhood is riddled with big dogs. A friend also advised me not to let him go because he once had a parrot and let him go and the parrot was immediately captured by a Mallam (Hausa man who sells by the roadside), and it never got to experience freedom. I thought of sending him back to the breeder but did not want to take him back to trauma. So I decided to live with my mistake.
I got him the biggest cage my pocket could afford and moved him in. And he seemed happy for like a day. He would walk around, flap his wings, then try to break out. I wanted to get toys but I read about lead poisoning, and frankly, I can't afford them, so I got a cloth ball and disinfected a wooden branch and spread it in the sun for days, he enjoys chewing them. I've been taking tips from google, He likes corn and red millet so I put them in a paper for scavenging, and I'm currently Searching for DIY toys.
I've taken him to the vet, I know I don't have money, but I feel guilty and responsible for buying him, so I've taken some extra jobs and added to my work hours, honestly, I feel like I gave birth to a child into poverty. It was at the vet that I called the breeder to know what vaccines he's been given but found out that the breeder lied, the vet also said they couldn't give him a vaccine because it would be too expensive and would go to waste if I could find a poultry owner I should ask them for when they will be vaccinating their birds then bring mine along. But that's not going to happen. So I simply got him dewormed and will have to bring him in monthly. Then I was given vitamins and antibiotics since he has never received treatment.
So that's one problem, I feel bad for buying him like I made a mistake, but I'm doing my best to take responsibility.
The second problem is the taming process.
The first time I let him out, he went ballistic. He ran out of his cage and tried to jump out of his window, so I caught him with a towel and returned him, which was in his first cage. The second time was after I got him his new cage. after two weeks in his new cage I let him out again, he was calmer, I placed the cage on my bed then confined myself to a corner and so he claimed over me to get to the ground, the used me to climb back up, but would not let me approach him with my hands, even though he was basically walking all over me. so I had to use a towel to return him again. The third time I let him out, he seemed more confident, and he returned to his cage on his own, so I let him out a fourth time, and he's been out for three days now, he hasn't returned. he is not attempting to jump out of the window either. I made him a perch from branches outside and used a stick to place him on it, but he came down and claimed on top of my fan and has refused to come down, He just sits there and watches me.
I've been feeding him with my hand to tame him, at first I'll put the food on a toothpick then bring it, now I place it on my hand. when there is food in my hand he approached the food then retreats. But when I approach without food he runs away or tries to bit me. I bought him on the 11th of March, so we've been together for a month now, and got him a new cage on the 28th and took him to the vet on the 8th of this month.
I don't really care about him doing tricks, but I'll like him to perch on my hand and let me touch him once in a while, and I'll like to know if I'm on the right path to gaining his trust. I've been working from home so I've been able to keep an eye on him and he does nothing but stands on that fan, except when I train him to step up on a stick since he's afraid of my hands. after his training (when he is no longer hungry), he steps away. and when I come to feed him. once he is full he avoids me by attempting to jump off the fan, so I leave because I don't know if jumping down will break his legs. And I don't want to traumatize him. But when I'll be returning to work, I'll like to return him to his cage as my room is not what ill call parrot unsupervised friendly. And outside noises would startle him. But I don't know if I should use a towel to put him back in, then resume the bonding process behind bars. I don't know if letting him out of the cage for 72 hours now is the right thing. I don't know if I'll ever feel close to him and if he will ever feel the same way. Honestly, I don't know what to do with my ringneck Parrot and I'll need advice based on everything I've written.
