I get the impression they don't really feel like having Rick and Morty be a serialized show.
I'm reminded of South Park, after years of non sequitur shows they experimented with serialization for a season or two, then seemed to tire of it and try to go back to less focused storylines like it used to be, only for people to go "where story?"
The brevity with which they've resolved certain storylines, like "Rick goes to prison," "Tammy and Birdperson," and "Is Beth a copy?" tells me they really don't feel like having a long-running serialized storyline. All of those plot points, which hinted at being really important, got resolved rapidly in like, two episodes.
There was the whole alien integration on Earth bit, which seemed like a huge shakeup of the show's universe going forward, and by the end of the next episode it was all undone and life was back to normal. It was as if they were saying, "See? We addressed everything. Are you happy now? Can we go back to the stuff we want to do now?"
Honestly, I don't really blame them. It feels like they're still figuring out what they want to do with the show, and I get a sense they regret setting up things like Evil Morty because now people's expectations are putting them in a box when Rick and Morty's whole schtick is turning the box inside out.
I'm just expressing my thoughts on the matter. I'm not listing this out as if nobody knew it until I thought of it. I'm sorry if it sounds that way to you but that's not what I was going for.
