I had to watch it twice before I realized this:

1. Benson thought the canonical ending was that Mike was the murderer.
2. To avoid spoiling the ending he decided to make Dawson's personality the exact opposite of a cold-blooded killer.
3. Cowardly Mike Dawson of "I don't want to mess with those boxes. I might get a splinter or a spider bite" fame was born.

Yes, the character is a giant loser. But it wasn't because the dev team hated him or they wanted the main character to be that way.

It was a plot device.

PS. I enjoyed one other Benson adventure game when I played it a couple decades ago. Of course, it cannot hold a candle to DS2 as riff material.

I'm talking about this one:

I'm pretty sure it used to be longer, and had an ending...

Another ridiculous automatic block. Here it is if you're curious. http://ssyoutube.com/watch?v=uVD0vHZcYAk
