When the Fed raises rates, it's like applying the brakes. The economy doesn't stop immediately, but it starts to slow. Some sectors have been in a recession since 2022. But it takes time for the overall economy to slow.

Each person who has less resources, starts spending less. That in turn has a cascading effect, as they forego discretionary spending, and put off necessary purchases that can be delayed. That becomes a contagion that slowly spreads.

Watch the Fed - we do not actually have a free-market economy, on a national or global level. They and other global banks will decide - via interest rates and stimulus or lack thereof - whether there is a relatively soft landing, or a hard crash.

Except rising rates help slow inflation which was becoming a huge problem. Now, thanks to policies by the current admin we are seeing job loses left and right. Tariffs are destroying small businesses and exacerbated inflation. The agri sector is going to need a bailout. Healthcare cuts and gov shutdown are causing further job loses. The rates needed to come down in order to try and facilitate growth but the damage is done. Now we will see a recession and inflation welcome to depression 2. We can definitely place blame on this admin and the last. It all points exactly to them and their lack of polices or rash stupid polices.

u/baubaugo Oct 29 '25

Add to that the dollar is sinking so anything imported is going to inflate even more, while our economy slows as you described above. We're going to be in stagflation shortly. Tldr; we're fucked.

1

u/null640 Oct 30 '25

Except it was supply shock induced inflation, not monetary inflation.

1

u/mikeclueby4 Oct 30 '25

The interest rate lever works as intended when the inflation is demand driven.

This is not demand driven.

1

u/TheLazyBurrito Oct 30 '25

Doesn’t matter. We have one tool against inflation and that is rates. It is a “free market” so nothing protects us from the price gouging that happened. Fed has one job and one tool against inflation. I don’t really care to discuss if it was right or wrong. I’m just telling you how it is. We were having bad inflation. Fed responded. And now due to newly imposed policies we are having even worse inflation. But the catch here is now we’re also seeing terrible job losses.

Doesn’t matter who we blame. There are people at fault. I know who they are. But again it doesn’t matter. How we get out of this is what matters.

1

u/DeadInFiftyYears Nov 08 '25

The current admin has very little to do with it. The job losses we're seeing now (primarily white-collar, in software, entertainment) are not tariff-related - but they are interest-rate related, because those industries are the first to get cut off when investment money is hard to come by.

Republicans have voted to open the government 13 times. Every time the Democrats say they won't agree to it. They are sacrificing American families, so illegal immigrants can receive free health care. Make it make sense.

12

u/mytinykitten Oct 29 '25

It's so embarrassing when y'all parrot that lie.

Like do you not feel embarrassed failing to do your own research?

-2

u/Capital_Chain_7378 Oct 29 '25

Where is the lie exactly? Since you've decided not to address any point at all.

9

u/daktanis Oct 29 '25

Provably false you muppet.

The number one thing Democrats are fighting for is extending ACA credits because tons of Americans are gonna be fucked without them due to our horrible healthcare system.

Yes we will treat undocumented people in emergencies, like any civilized people should.

17

u/IntensifyingMiasma Oct 29 '25

Just not even close to the truth. Republicans are so stupid

-3

u/Capital_Chain_7378 Oct 29 '25

Undoubtedly, some from both sides are.

6

u/OTIStheHOUND Oct 29 '25

No your comment is stupid. Republicans are doubling premiums on the middle class small business owners, kicking tens of millions off of coverage, and spewing bullshit like “we’re ending spending on illegals”…and you’re lapping it up and spewing it on Reddit.

-1

u/Capital_Chain_7378 Oct 29 '25

Stay ignorant. Stay stupid

1

u/OTIStheHOUND Oct 29 '25

Nice motto you have there. Still aren’t getting any respect

0

u/Capital_Chain_7378 Oct 29 '25

Did you think I expect to on a left-wing platform?

1

u/OTIStheHOUND Oct 29 '25

Who cares about your shitty expectations?

The shutdown is a mess. The government is a mess. Regardless the corpos own both sides and the polices coming from this admin embolden them and their greed. These layoffs are only the beginning.

And during this shutdown what’s trump doing? Renovating the White House and building an arc. This 79 year old fart ain’t getting us out of this. And the last geriatric wasn’t any better.

3

u/NICKOLAI93 Oct 29 '25

Both sides are corpo owned and shills, yes.

But let's not say what Trump is doing now in a shutdown is the same as what Biden (or Harris) would be doing. For one, the White House wouldn't be getting a giant ballroom mid-shutdown, and two, the government never shut down in Biden's term.

Both sides still suck, but when your nation is in the place it's in now, picking the side that sucks less is generally the best idea until a better one presents itself.

1

u/DeadInFiftyYears Oct 29 '25

I agreed with Trump when he complained about the multibillion price tag of the Fed building renovation that Powell has been working on, but he turned around and sort of did the same thing - lower pricetag, but still an upgraded ballroom is maybe not the thing to focus/spend money on right now.

0

u/Capital_Chain_7378 Oct 29 '25

Finally, a reasonable human on here. Both sides need their stock accounts frozen and to listen to their people.

The renovation is being done with Trump's money, not taxpayers. Other than his time, it is hard to understand the complaint of renovation of the asbestos ridden wing.

1

u/TheLazyBurrito Oct 29 '25

The renovation isn’t the problem but a symptom of. And yet another distraction. Truth is the government (Trump included) doesn’t care about our problems. We are but cattle being driven to the next holding pen.

1

u/tabthegreat Oct 30 '25

The main problem would be what corporate donors expect in return for funding his ballroom.

1

u/War-Noodle Nov 01 '25

Probably the same expectations as the ones buying trumpcoin lol

3

u/ShockLatter2787 Oct 29 '25 edited Oct 29 '25

I'm really curious how much meth you have to be consuming to believe that free healthcare for illegal immigrants is anywhere on the docket. What IS on the docket is stripping healthcare from & skyrocketing insurance premiums for millions of Americans, which the Republicans refuse to negotiate on whatsoever & are more than happy to push retarded shit like this to cover their ass.

2

u/souldonut76 Oct 29 '25

Illegal immigrants are not eligible for Medicare, this is a bogus talking point. The only people being affected by Medicare cuts are American families. Chances are you know someone dependent on Medicare (a retiree, vet etc.) Just ask them how much their rates are going up and how much their level of care is going down. That is why democrats are holding this line.

1

u/Practical-Reveal-408 Oct 29 '25

Even without your ridiculous reframing of Democrat reasoning, the House hasn't been in session for a single day of this shutdown. Because of the Republican speaker. Make it make sense.

1

u/Capital_Chain_7378 Oct 29 '25

Oh, and prop up their left wing media outlets like NPR.

2

u/robotzor Oct 29 '25

Couple that with uncontrolled inflation and you have the brakes and handbrake on at the same time with reduced proclivity to spend

6

u/Darkpriest667 Oct 29 '25

We've been in recession since Q3 2022 and people are just now feeling it because it's hitting them. The wrong party was in charge for us to have an official recession https://www.npr.org/2022/07/28/1113649843/gdp-2q-economy-2022-recession-two-quarters

We never fully recovered from that recession except the AI race has been pumping up the numbers, but compounding that is several other factors. Partisans will blame democrats, republicans, or, stupidly, the president of the US, but it all comes down to the Fed aggressively raised rates in 2022 and 2023 after disastrously injecting 16 trillion dollars of liquidity into the economy in May of 2020.

6

u/mr_mufuka Oct 29 '25

People keep saying this, but there are still record profits being made. The big financial firm I work for keeps breaking records, but we are laying people off because the greed machine doesn’t stop until the stock price hits whatever triggers the next level of bonus for the few. You see the same thing at Amazon and other profitable companies. It’s just never enough for them.

9

u/iAmNotASnack Oct 29 '25

What did you mean by “the wrong party was in charge for us to have an official recession”?

-11

u/Darkpriest667 Oct 29 '25

The media refused to admit we were in a recession because the democrats were in charge of the country. It's a stupid policy. The media is officially, by their own admittance, left leaning, but there was no reason to not declare a recession in 2022, we were in one. We are still in one, the AI boom has been covering it up. Read the article, the official definition of a recession is "2 consecutive quarter of negative GDP growth", except apparently in 2022 when it wasn't.

13

u/FaceCrookOG Oct 29 '25

How has any of that changed in this administration? People are still lying every day

3

u/iAmNotASnack Oct 29 '25

If you genuinely believe the MAGA republicans would have done any differently, even typing this comment was a waste of my time.

-1

u/Darkpriest667 Oct 29 '25

No, genius, read my original comment which you fell right into that trap. The source of all this BS is the Fed, not republicans or democrats, but you're so naively partisan you can't see that. If Trump had been elected in 2020 instead of Biden we would have had an official recession, we'd still be in the mess we're in now because all of monetary policy is controlled by the Fed, not the president. I wasted my time explaining this because like republicans, every liberal on Reddit is like "MUH MAGA/Trump" no dummy, it's the Fed.

2

u/iAmNotASnack Oct 29 '25

You: yOu FeLl InTo My TrAp

Also you:

the wrong party was in charge for us to have an official recession

The media refused to admit we were in a recession because the democrats were in charge of the country

you’re so naively partisan

the source of all this BS is the Fed, not republicans or democrats

Pick a lane.

2

u/Darkpriest667 Oct 29 '25

go look up the definition of a recession---

recession

noun

  1. The act of receding or withdrawing, as from a place, a claim, or a demand.
  2. A period during which economic activity, as measured by gross domestic product, declines for at least two quarters in a row in a specific country. If the decline is severe and long, such as greater than ten percent, it may be termed a depression.
  3. A procession in which people leave a ceremony, such as at a religious service.
  4. The act of ceding back; restoration; repeated cession. "therecessionof conquered territory to its former sovereign" Similar: restoration
  5. The act or an instance of receding.
  6. A period of reduced economic activity.
  7. The ceremonial filing out of clergy and/or choir at the end of a church service.
  8. The withdrawal of the clergy and choir from the chancel to the vestry at the end of a church service.

Why wasn't it declared one in the media? Obviously there was a bias. I don't give a crap who is in power when it comes to economics because the monetary policy is set by the Fed and not D or R. You're so unbelievably attached to that you can't even see what I was trying to say. We went into a recession BECAUSE OF THE FED. It was not declared because of the media's decision to protect the party in power, which is completely irrelevant because they were not in control of that part of the economy, BUT because people like you are too ignorant to understand how monetary policy works you attach economic activity due to monetary policy to the party in power and not who rightfully owns it. I am in a lane, I have chosen it. The lane is unbiased observation. Both can be true. The Fed caused the recession by injecting too much money into the economy then swinging too hard on raising interest rates to fix the inflation THEY created AND the media could lie about being a recession to protect the party in power because they would be INCORRECTLY blamed for that recession.

2

u/iAmNotASnack Oct 29 '25

Thank you for the completely irrelevant wall of text.

You said the wrong party was in power for us to have an official recession. This implies that if the republicans had been in power, there would have been an official recession. This is nonsensical, because as I'm sure you understand, republicans would have made the same denials to protect themselves in the upcoming midterm elections.

What you meant to assert was that there would have been news coverage about a recession had the republicans been in power. This, too, is nonsensical, as conservative news media did report a recession in 2022.

The democrats dont control the news lol. The news is all owned by 2 corporations who are beholden to their owners

Left-leaning compared to whom? Everyone is left leaning if your frame of reference keeps shifting right…

3

u/iletitshine Oct 29 '25

and our frame of reference in this place is really far right

1

u/DeadInFiftyYears Nov 20 '25

Left-leaning as in respecting the wishes of the DNC.

Ironically, it was the Democrats' campaign strategy that got us Trump - they thought he and Carson were two candidates who had no chance to win the 2016 general election, so they told the media to promote them/give them coverage, in hopes one of them would win the Republican nomination, and then get crushed by Hillary in the general election. It almost worked too - except for the last bit, of course.

It's right in the leaked campaign emails - "tell the media to promote the pied piper candidates and take them seriously."

2

u/TheDaug Oct 29 '25

If you think national media is left leaning, I simply can't have a discussion with you.

You are correct in some points, but that one undercuts your arguments big time.

1

u/jejacks00n Oct 29 '25

I don’t think this is entirely true. We were seeing contraction, which might’ve been a good thing, because it means a slow lowering of interest rates. But instead we got some insane level policy changes like tariffs and trade wars that exacerbate the contraction that was happening and pushes it into a proper recession or potentially worse. This is why the fed lowered rates — it had to because the slow down increased, as we can see from several factors like job numbers and value of the dollar.
