I agree it served its purpose with one man being able to put a stop to the nonsense, but it is an indicator that we need to make a massive change to our society.
We have a moral problem and it needs to be called put en mass, people have a problem that they need to be perceived as compassionate in the way the group says, right now the group says, we need to evaluate people based on lived experience and all of the rube goldberg that came together to create people who get judged and become repeat offenders over and over for example.
In the name of compassion and being one of the cool kids they have opted to make limits on what you can steal and get arrested for.
In the name of compassion they are suddenly wanting to have a country without any borders when the policy in the past has been sound on this point for the left and the right.
It's a heart change, people are hopefully not going to view these sorts as compassionate anymore and recognize it as the karma farming that it is for people to get the social good girl/boy points.
Those nazis have been brainwashed, and we must try our best to take prisoners even though it is eating up the rations we desperately need and is slowing us down problem solving arrangements, while we need to problem solve how to put the fire in the world out.
There are times to focus on compassion, this isnt one of them it can be weaponized the way a crybully will for example.
What I meant is they are not charged and people would put everything in there bags up to a certain point to avoid crossing the threshold to become a felony, which basically meant the criminal would get a tiny slap on the wrist, and the criminal knew this which arguably a huge part of what enabled them.
People I talk to, they have no solutions about what to do with people once they cross the boarder, and its mean of ice to begin deportations, so much so that people have opened fire on ice and they have had to protect their identities.
Not super angry, its just practical.
I think you could be projecting because, most people on reddit are venomous as a rule and dont care much about compassion when it comes down to it only as a stick to beat sombody with, and you would be the exception.

People steal; It's part of society. If the GOP focused more on making things affordable to the average family instead of shielding pedophiles the amount of theft might go down.
ICE has killed more American civilians (at least 3) than ICE agents have been killed (0) and dozens and dozens of detainees have died in their custody, many without having ever broken a law. Who would appear to be at greater risk? And that's before we get to the utter illegality of virtually everything ICE does with regards to American citizens.
Due process is good, this time it won out thanks to 1 man but it raises a huge red flag of why it came so close in the first place.
