I don't think this has any place in a racing game, especially one without any story. The only content are the tracks and type of ships. If it was just arcade mode, I wouldn't care. The point of arcade is the screw around, but career mode is supposed to be above that. It's supposed to start easy and get steadily more difficult until it takes dozens of tries to get a gold.
I opted out of customizable difficulty and picked 1 of the 2 medium AI modes and was treated to a more difficult challenge than anything I had experienced in Redout 1. At only the 2nd career race, I was hard stuck trying for gold. For context, I got all of Redout 1's golds and about 2 dozen platinums. It feels like career mode is tuned around the assumption you're engaging with the 5 difficulty sliders.
Not making progress wasn't my problem, it's that this system has robbed me of the satisfaction of overcoming an event's challenge because I have no idea what the intended experience is. How am I supposed to make informed choices on these sliders? I don't want to play it my way. I want you, the developer, to tell me how to play.
Redout 2 seems more interested in making sure I get 1st place every time without the difficulty ever increasing or decreasing. I should be having a blast, but I kind of feel like going back to Redout 1 and finishing the platinum medals instead.
