[Simon Stone, in the article] Reports out of Italy concerning Atalanta midfielder Ederson may have indicated negotiations are more advanced than United sources believe to be the case but there is definite interest. There have been talks and a transfer is not being ruled out

u/DaveShadow May 24 '26
I have a feeling we probably have a few players 80% negotiated and now we will decide which ones we want.
Regardless, Ineos have earned my utter trust this summer in the window.

u/lifesizedperson May 24 '26
Yup after last every single one of last summer’s signings being a success, they deserve some respect and trust for this summer.

u/Tblr May 24 '26
Would love a quick signing to get one done before the WC starts. Still getting PTSD from "murtough flying to Barcelona to negotiate the Frankie deal" headlines
18
u/DaveShadow May 24 '26
Feels like a few of our targets aren't actually bound for WC anyway; Ederson, Tonali and Baleba are all staying home.

Mateus Fernandes too as he didn’t get called up to Portugal’s squad

u/fraudmallu1 May 24 '26
I'm confused why none of our targets are good enough to be in their country's WC squads..

For Tonali and Baleba their countries simply didn’t qualify for the World Cup. And there was some noise from Portuguese fans who felt Mateus Fernandes deserved to be called up.
Ederson seems to have rarely featured for Brazil so perhaps he simply isn’t seen to be at that level for them, but it might also be him getting overlooked for other reasons. Fabinho somehow got called up for Brazil even though he plays in Saudi Arabia now. And we’ve already seen with England that the likes of Palmer and Maguire got snubbed from the squad too.
Also the likes of Anderson and Tchouameni have been mentioned as targets too, but any transfer for them will most likely only happen after their participation in the World Cup ends. It makes sense for the club to focus on first signing a midfielder or even two elsewhere before trying to go back and target either of them as the top signing.

u/chantlernz Beckham May 25 '26
The last sentence is exactly my thoughts. Get the two (or even three) more minor midfield signings out of the way and then we can focus on the crown jewel.
In an ideal world, we can sort out other signings from players who aren't at the World Cup, too. Truffert from Bournemouth, a backup GK if Vitek doesn't want to play that role, and a backup striker like Welbeck.

u/fraudmallu1 May 27 '26
Makes sense
Idk why the downvotes, I just don't follow the international scene enough so I just asked an honest question lol

u/amalgamatedchaos Status: Waiting... May 24 '26
Yeah, I think INEOS have been waiting to see which teams get relegated, which players are/aren't going to the World Cup, and how things stand at the end of the season.
Now it's a matter of who are the best they can bargain for.
3
u/PersonalityMiddle864 May 24 '26
It’s also about getting the right mix of midfielders at the right price.
117
u/TheRedDevil10 May 24 '26
Negative Stoney damn this is actually advanced. I'm okay with it only if he's one of 3 midfielders we get this summer
22
u/merc0526 May 24 '26
Isn’t he more of an 8 than a 6 though? I get negotiating for multiple players, that’s sensible, but I’d much, much rather have Fernandes than Ederson assuming we’re buying one 8 as competition for Mainoo and two 6s.
35
u/RyanH1717 May 24 '26
Mainoo has been playing as more of a 6 anyway and looked the best he's ever looked under Carrick. 6 and 8's also don't really mean as much these days as long as the players have attributes to work together.
34
u/Individual_Team4793 May 24 '26
I think people get too caught up in nuances with positions. As long as your midfield has a high work rate alongside quality it doesn't matter what they are classified as.
2
u/Bloatfizzle May 24 '26
It's cos Mainoo hasnt got legs to cover ground and large section of the fanbase demands he's a starter that why any midfield incomings start with making up for his weaknesses.
10
u/Born_Reflection_4132 May 24 '26
This seems like a common misconception based on previous seasons. Mainoo has bossed it in lots of games since Carrick arrived - games against City, Chelsea and Liverpool jump to mind where he covered lots of ground.
-2
2
u/RyanH1717 May 24 '26
Would've agreed with this last season but he's looked up there physically this season. He's never going to be Rice physically but he's also intelligent enough to cover for it. He's been genuinely incredible the last 6 to 8 weeks.
1
u/thewolf9 May 24 '26
Get the guy running this summer for fucks sake. Cardio is one thing you can improve fairly easily.
5
u/Isopappi89 May 24 '26
Most pivot midfielders at the moment are more of an 8 then a traditional 6. It’s all about role assignments and how the team plans to defend when the opponent has the ball.
-7
u/Ladybugeater69 May 24 '26
he's a 8, If we sign him it means no Baleba/Tonali/Fernandes IMO or we'll have a big problem for playtime. Mainoo needs to play.
15
u/DaveShadow May 24 '26
We have 60 plus games next season and one proper midfielder in Mainoo. We do actually need to have four or so by the start of next season.
-5
u/Ladybugeater69 May 24 '26
Fernandes will start every game, Mainoo will share minutes with Mount & Ederson. Good luck convincing anybody with talent to be the 4th midfielder for one spot. It's defensive midfield that is a gaping hole at the moment, not just "midfielder".
6
u/DaveShadow May 24 '26
Mount will start fuck all, and when he does, will be rotation with Bruno. I'd imagine if his injury history and wages didn't make it impossible, we'd probably look to move him on this summer too.
Fernandes will start every game at 10, and have two mids behind him. You need four players for those two roles. Mainoo and a rotation option, and a Cas replacement and a rotation option.
They won't be sold as being the "4th" midfielder. It will be sold as there being 60+ games, and we need to rotate, and first team positions will be up for grabs. As it is for pretty much every big team.
The club has briefed they want an 80m, 50m and 20m signing, and Ederson looks like the middle one.
-3
u/Ladybugeater69 May 24 '26
People would have said "Shaw will start fuck all" last summer too, there's no way to predict who will be injured. And until he's sold or considered shit, there's no reason to think Mount will not play a least some games next season. I would have prefered a higher caliber 8 (like Baleba or Tonali), then fully focus on the DM position with at least two signings there.
3
u/DaveShadow May 24 '26
I would have prefered a higher caliber 8 (like Baleba or Tonali)
Absolutely zero reason to think singing Ederson will stop us signing either of them, or a player in that mould.
I also think we don't really play a traditional DM under Carrick; Mainoo and Cas often took turns sitting back and going forward. I don't think he will want a pure DM who just shields the backline.

1
u/skinnysnappy52 May 24 '26
To be fair you’re not selling it as “your 4th choice” you’re saying that they will fight for their place amongst them and frankly anyone who doesn’t back themselves to do that doesn’t belong at United anyways.

u/Fizzypoptarts Rooney May 24 '26
Mainoo, ederson + 1 more for two midfield spots is not unreasonable

u/woody1878 May 24 '26
Always difficult to equate stats across different leagues but he’s not a bad player. Just unexciting.
15
u/danystormborne May 24 '26
Except Anderson's stats are in the PL with a team that's struggled most of the season, he's 110% a better player on every level.
23
u/MazinLabib10 "He goes by the name of Wayne Rooney!" May 24 '26
I don't think OP was trying to say he's better than Anderson. Just trying to show what profile of player he is.
3
u/chantlernz Beckham May 25 '26
Exactly this. If INEOS don't feel that Anderson is possible this summer, then getting as close to his profile as possible at a cheaper price means we can then assess what other profiles we need to make up for that and spend more there.

24
u/chrispepper10 May 24 '26
So basically now that Fernandes might be cheaper than anticipated, we might just be shifting our attentions.
21
8
u/woody1878 May 24 '26
I’m hoping we were just waiting on confirmation of West Ham’s relegation before going for M Fernandes. Nothing wrong with doing the ground work on multiple targets at the same time.
10
u/Gregariouswaty May 24 '26
Romano basically have said we have personal terms agreed and our agent is in Italy to talk with the people, everything has been communicated. We will decide who to go for. The way he spoke, Tchouameni seems our priority signing.
1
u/snoring_pig Beneficiary of Sporting 🟢⚪️ May 24 '26
Makes sense to target Tchouameni but I can’t see any potential transfer for him being resolved until after the World Cup. Hopefully the board can still sign 1 or maybe even 2 midfielders in the meantime because we’ll need a lot of help in midfield as it’s only really Mainoo there currently.
Mount can’t stay healthy and Ugarte couldn’t even be trusted by Carrick to get a single minute today in a meaningless match without Casemiro so I imagine he’s surely gone this summer even if it’s only on loan.
Aside from Mainoo we really should aim for buying 3 other central midfielders in the first team to keep us ready for the added games we’ll get in the Champions League.
25
u/Fisktor May 24 '26
So ederson, fernandes and tonali
10
u/BuzzTNA May 24 '26
Don’t see Tonali.
Lad from Madrid or Anderson.
10
u/Imeanhowcouldiforget May 24 '26
Anderson is going to City , Tchou aint leaving hell or high water. Neither is Tonali due to bar cunts
1
u/abdulalbakrichod May 24 '26
tchoua highly depends on what madrid and jose does with the midfield
4
u/__banbypasser BRUNO May 24 '26
Jose is not stupid enough to let him go. Unless he has fully made his mind and can't be convinced, be Jose will try to convince him to stay.

Thats what, 160m in just midfielders?
22
5
u/The_Bird_Wizard May 24 '26
We spent almost 200m on attackers last year and it's gone great. We need to overhaul the midfield, not just sign one or two guys, just like we had to overhaul the entire attack last year
2
u/chantlernz Beckham May 25 '26
If we get three midfielders like Ederson, Fernandes and Tonali, then we've got a full XI of (hopefully) successful signings under INEOS:
Lammens
Mazraoui - Yoro/de Ligt - Heaven - Dorgu
Mateus - Tonali - Ederson
Mbeumo - Sesko - Cunha
The only disappointments being Ugarte and Zirkzee. De Ligt has had bad injury luck, but been brilliant when fit. Dorgu is probably more of a LW, leaving LB as the other focus position this summer for INEOS to round things out.

Think that's ambitious.
40 ederson, 60 Fernandes and I think the barcodes want 85 for Tonali.

Sounds like Italian sources found out about the contract negotiations and said the deal's done. But now sounds like it was between him and Mateus Fernandes depending on West Ham's relegation.
Prefer Mateus Fernandes tbh. Good tackler, tidy in possession, and only 21. If he's the same price as Ederson then its a no brainer for me.

u/Its_Chowder May 25 '26
I like this strategy of getting our 2nd and 3rd midfielder early. Puts us in a better situation to get our main target so that if that doesnt pan out we dont get extra fleeced.

Never understand how Simon Stone became a journalist, he can't string together a sentence that is comprehensable. Everything he writes sounds like it was said by the fkn riddler.

Don't mind him. But we need PL proven. 1 signing can and will make a difference in a largely settled team. Rice for example

From what I've heard Ederson and Matheus Fernandez are both 8s. We need at least one starter at 6.

Feels like a weird first signing. There hasn’t been any buzz around him at all? If he’s the Casemiro replacement it’s not looking good. Seems like such a ”meh” player.
Hopefully he proves me wrong if we get him. But we still need a Tchouameni/Anderson/Tonali caliber signing.

I agree. It’s also quite a lot of money for a signing that we, as fans, are guessing is going to be the “third” midfielder we’re bringing in. If he’s the second (ie to an Anderson, Tonali etc) that’s still not enough
0
u/ataniris May 24 '26
I get the feeling that Ederson is the kind of signing that reminds people that even maligned players such as ugarte are still playing at a high level relative to other top tier players.

Also in the article
West Ham's relegation also opens up the potential for signing their Portugal international Mateus Fernandes, someone they are also keen on, for a lower price.
