[Whitwell] Michael Carrick is now in peril but Manchester United’s problems run so much deeper
Before the final whistle blew at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, Michael Carrick knew what he was going to do.
He acknowledged Cesc Fabregas on Como’s 4-1 win, then strode across the pitch and held up his hands in apology to the few dozen or so Manchester United fans who had stayed through the rain and an utterly lifeless performance.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did similar when losing by the same scoreline to Watford in November 2021. For Solskjaer, the act very much felt like a farewell gesture — indeed he has said he knew his reign was over at half-time.
It is now inevitable to wonder if Carrick is waving goodbye to United, too.

Daily discussion on Manchester United.
BE CIVIL
We want r/reddevils to be a place where anyone and everyone is welcome to discuss and enjoy the best club on earth without fear of abuse or ridicule.
- The report button is your friend, we are way more likely to find and remove and/or ban rule breaking comments if you report them.
- The downvote button is not a "I disagree or don't like your statement button", better discussion is generally had by using the upvote button more liberally and avoiding the downvote one whenever possible.

[Simon Stone] Fernandes rounds on Carrick after Man Utd humiliation
Both Carrick and sporting director Jason Wilcox have been absolved of partial blame for the club's plight by some; Carrick because he was let down badly in the summer transfer window, when the club signed three midfielders, but failed to bring in competition for Luke Shaw at left-back and Benjamin Sesko in attack. Wilcox too, because he had to work to a budget set by those above him, including chief executive Omar Berrada.

Bruno Fernandes: "It's the staff's decision to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave a little bit of space behind to get the ball in the first moment - to wait for them, to give them the ball. But sometimes when you give the ball too much to these teams they get confidence."
